Great Video. Love the concept of the channel and the bases, I know a lot of people joke about playing a Bass with a Pick as a crime. But I do all the time among other styles. My favorites are the really thick Dunlop Picks. As far as Bases, I have multiples. But the 2 Electrics I have are both short scales. 1st one I bought is a Hofner made in China Shorty Bass. Please feel free to look it up for a picture. I have a Black one. Mahogany body, Maple Neck and since it's (non-sites), it has an Indian Laurel fretboard vs. Rosewood. It has a Volume and Tone and one basic black-designed candy bar style Humbucker pickup by the bridge. I bought it because it looks weird like some kind of sci-fi-track bass LOL. It has a Hofner headstock but the name is on the pickguard so the headstock is blank. I bought it because it looks different as I said and also wanted something that maybe sounded more Vintage like a Paul McCartney (who is also a big Pick Player) Hofner but didn't look like one. Well, the Bass came with Hofner Modern Round Wounds and the one Bridge Pickup sounds more Modern than I like, so I replaced the strings with La Bella Flat Wound hand-wound Beatle Bass strings which helped a little, but I found a Lace Alumitone Pickup which should be a direct replacement for the Default Hofner Pickup that should give it a more warmer tone. I will hopefully have that installed soon and see if that helps. At current Even with the tone knob down, there is still too much trouble for me with this Bass. My 2nd Electric bass is a Short Scale Sterling by Musicman Stingray (like I can afford the American-made non-Sterling version LOL). This one is in Daphne Blue and when the original Earnie Ball Round Wound regular slinky Strings that came on the bass eventually broke, I replaced them with the Super Slinky versions and I like them better. They are the same strings, just thinner. This Bass from Indnesia uses all real Music Man HW and Electronics. Again this is a One Humbucker Music Man Neodymium Pickupo by the bridge, Mahogany body, Maple Fretboard, and Neck with vintage Light clover Music Man tuners. All Music Man Shortscales are passive but besides the volume (which is also a Push Pull for a 10db volume boost), and your typical Bass tone knob, this bass has a 3-way Rotary switch in the center which makes Pickup go from Series, Single Coil, and Parallel modes which offer a variety of tones depending on what I am playing. With a Pick or not. If you heard this bass from Indonesia, and the also passive Earnie Ball Music Man American version of this bass, same stings and setup, you could not tell a sound difference as they use the same pickup and electronic configuration at least. I have other Basses that are not electric, but that is another conversation. The Sterling Music Man Bass I bought was a Leo Fender-designed Bass (Bassed on), again a lot of My Punk Music Bass idols including Tim Conorford play Stingrays. Now do I need a lot of electric basses no. I am not a collector. However, I like that Punk Rock Tone. So if I get Electric Bass number 3, whether it be an actual Fender or some other brand, cost aside, do I want a P-Bass, J-Bass, PJ-Bass, Reverse P-Bass, Double P or reverse P-Bass, or a 2 humbucker bass, like either 2 Music Man style Humbucker pickups, or 2 candybar pickups. Do I want to stick with 4 strings, or do I really need a 5/6 string? Should I stick with some normal scale or go Multi? These are the questions I am researching for my take it to the grave probably play at every gig/song bass. I like the Stingray, but the tone is distinctive, and we'll see about the Hofner when I replace that pickup, the Body shape is only good when standing with a strap holding it up as it has a good bit of neck dive, and again as unique as that bass looks which is cool, I like the Music Man more traditional body shape. So I know this is a long comment. The longest I made on a video in a while. Thanks for doing this channel, keep the videos coming (I'll keep watching), nice to meet you, and I'll let you know what I decide on Electric Bass #3 when I do.

Thanks for the comment... I hope you've subscribed, as I have a bunch of videos in the works that I would love for you to watch! I honestly have no experience with short scale, but I've been thinking about getting one. I really like the short scale stingrays. From what I've read, they have a way more consistent punch throughout, unlike a regualar bass that loses a lot of bottom end in the higher strings. I've never played flats, but I'm thinking about having my Squier set up for flats, so i have a P bass with flats to play with. Tim Commerford is amazing, and definitley one of my favorite Stingray players. He has some of the best tone there is. It's hard to tell you what bass to buy next... It depends on what you're trying to use it for. That being said, a P bass with PJ pickups can basically do anything, so you can't go wrong with that. A standard P bass fits just about everything, but a Jazz bass is capable of so many tones! I'm lucky to have at least one of each, but if I had to have just one, it would be the PJ for all the sounds it can get... and my Ultra has such a great neck as well. I'm not a fan of the old chunky P bass necks, but some people love them. It's best to play a bunch and see what you dig.

@@PickTheBass I have subscribed. I wouldn't say I like old clunky necks as well. When I look at Electric Bass Specs online, they say C, D, or whatever shaped the neck, and they use words like Baseball Bat to describe a neck, etc. Even if it is not necessarily a Spec they put on the EBGs in the stores, I like using that to go and feel what each neck feels like to see what kind of profile I want. As a person who listens to all kinds of music, and has been to all different kinds of concerts. at 50, I grew up in NYC in the late 70's. 90-90's. Jazz (including old school stuff), Classical Music ala Lincoln Center, etc., My main music was the Pumk. Hardcore NYC music came out of that scene, which also led to SKA which I love. I even saw Rancid in NYC when they were one of 2 opening bands for Offspring before they were as big as they are now when they were touring for their Smash Album in 1994 (30 years ago, Geez). I have seen Offspring one more time since then. I have also seen Bad Religion who inspired Offspring a few years ago which I love, but old-school NYC punk like The Ramones are the ticket. I also like Iggy Pop and stuff in that line as well. But as I have family members who play Horns, and again growing up on old school Jazz (Bop, and all Gener of Jazz from the 20s to current, instrumental and singing), I love Bands like Real Big Fish, and other related Ska Bands (only mentioning one to keep this comment shorter than my last one LOL). As I said I like all kinds of music. As far as playing styles, I love the sound and versatility of a Pick, I also do fingerstyle ok, I am not learning Tapping and Slap but again (as I like all Genre) most of the music I like to play either don't really use those techniques or barely, and if I were to do a cover of a song that used those techniques initially, I would work around it LOL. Short scales are just because I am only 5'5" and my hands are not so big LOL. I know (how many frets aside) The difference is between 2" to 7" depending on the scale length, Multiscale, etc., but I like the fast neck and I can reach all the frets depending on the cutaway of course. I would love to get a Double Humberker stingray for my next bass, but do I really need 2 stingrays LOL? There is also (not that I need something custom), but there is a custom Bass brand called Byte Bass Guitars out of Austria. They sound really good and cheaper than any Brand's custom shop or Bass Builder. Plus you can literally make it your own design-wise from scratch almost. But as cheap as they are, it is still money so if I go buy an EB through them, I would still need to save up. Not something sold in stores (online only), but they sell in the USA. Again I am still looking for that (take it to the grave electric basses) as I have other basses that are not electric including an Upright among others. I hate to pigeonhole myself into specific genres. I can talk about what I am writing and playing musicals, but the last few concerts I saw to give a variety of what I see are:(in no order but within the past year) Sungazer (with a local opening act), Dropkick Murphy's with 2 opening acts, Judast Prest with Sabaton opening, Sick of it All, with 2 Bands Opening, Hot Watter Music with 2 bands opening, Mammoth WVH with Nitta Straus opening, and I also saw her as a headliner separately with an opening act, the Local Jazz Festival (free memorial day stuff), and others in all different kind of Genres. These artists and bands were just the easier to drop. Like I said I like all kinds of Music. However, if I were to form a Band the music I like to write would be a mix of Ska, Punk (old and new styles), Jazz, and 70's/80's, and even current Metal. Even the (put any descriptive before the word core LOL) even with harsh vocals. But again it depends on the song. That is why I call myself a Mood Music person. I listen to whatever I am in the mood for, and I play whatever I am in the mood for. at that time. Anyway, I can't wait till you start posing regularly, and if I ever decide to do the same on CZcams, I'll send you my link so you can watch as well. Cheers till next time.

@@SethIzenzon-W2 I'm really digging the D profile on my Ultra, but the C profile on my Squier feels almost the same... I also love the compound radius on my Ultra, and the fact that its so flat where I'm usually playing, but the Marcus Miller is super round, and I fly on that... so it seems to be a bass to bass kind of thing. I started going to shows 93/94 when I was like 13, so I got to go to a bunch of cool shows to see bands like Rancid when they were new(ish). I must have seen Rancid like 6 times throughout High School at Roseland... I miss Roseland. I even managed to hang out with the Ramones once in 95 at a Rancid show, that was awesome. I too listen to lots of different music, my favorite band of all time is the Beach Boys. I pretty much play bass exactly the same, no matter what the style of music. My band is currently working on our 2nd album, and it's mostly Fat Records style punk, but with a lot of ska and reggae vibes as well. I too can't wait until I start posting regularly... I'm close, I have a bunch of videos that I've started filming, just have to finish them all and then repeat the process with new ideas. Hopefully in a few months it will seem like I've been doing this forever.

Good luck the channel.

    • @PickTheBass

@@martinporter8837 I have really only played active basses... it didn't really start on purpose, I got my Prophecy II when I was 15 and it just happened to be active... I got used to that so I kept buying active basses. I feel like they are naturally more compressed, which makes me feel more sloppy on a passive bass, and at least for me they seem to be way more bright, which has been a huge part of my sound. If you are curious about how I play when with a band and what my tone is like, check out my band, Ride the Snake: www.youtube.com/@weareridethesnake.
