I remember hearing Bernie Sanders speak - immediately I said "Flatbush!" Thought he was from there. But I was wrong - he was from Midwood which is one block away. I was off by one block! Years ago here in Minnesota I was introduced to a dude and immediately said to my self that he was a Puerto Rican from East New York in Brooklyn. He did not have the time to chat but came back two weeks later. We had a much longer chat and he told me that, indeed, he was a Puerto Rican from ENY ~ that is where I grew up and recognized the neighborhood accent 1,200 miles away and 20 years after I left the area. I have been living in St Paul for nearly 35 years and still speak with a recognizable NY accent. Sadly, such accents are disappearing and you can no longer tell what neighborhood a person comes from in NYC because of all this gentrification and mobilization. The old East New York and Flatbush accents (and others) are disappearing . Sad to say, such losses are irreversible.
