I definitely knew I was in the presence of greatness when I recorded Michael playing this piece. Goose bumps all the way !

The guitar playing by Brian Allan is such a big part of this performance ... just 'on it' from go to whoa! :)

Are there any questions? BTW, after watching this, you can understand why Michael's shelf behind him has all of those IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year Awards.

Brilliant !!! Mimicking a train is what this tune is all about. How Michael does it is incredible too. A classically trained violinist would say his wrist is too stiff and the way he holds the bow is all wrong !!! That said if you get the desired sound WHO CARES :)

I'm 18 years old and now a proffesional classical violinist... and you're right, his technique is not what you'd expect and probably not the most efficient - but, exactly, who cares! It works wonders for him! Many "proffesional" "classical" musicians (including myself) wish they could play these pieces like Michael. I greatly admire him. He probably wouldn't be able to play Haydn or Mozart properly, but I think making that comparation is very unfair for both sides. Right now I'm in a spot where I'm tired of so much Mozart and classical music (which I still love) and I love getting refreshed with this music.

@@tianarmas1665 I heard David Garrett trying his hand at "fiddle" style where he did the dueling banjo song and replaced the banjo with his violin so guitar/violin duet instead of guitar/banjo.
David Garrett is the most perfect "classical" violinist I ever heard/watched.... and wanted to hear him try "fiddle"...... and.... when I heard his duel banjo..... he SUCKS!!!!!!
Don't get me wrong.... he played it "perfectly" like he ALWAYS does...... but..... it sucked.... he just can't "fiddle". He is too "stiff" when he fiddles.... I think literally his BODY just wont let him "loosen up" to get the "sloppy" sound that is part of good fiddle. He can do a LOT of different "styles" of music and its fucking AWESOME!...... He does a good "Irish fiddle"..... He just cant do country "fiddle".
I have messed around with it a LITTLE and the way I explain "fiddle" is....... If you can Pat your head and Rub your stomach...... and switch them back and forth super fast for 3 mins. straight without fucking it up..... you should have no problem learning to "fiddle".
About..... technique..... The whole carved in STONE "This is how you do it.... and if you don't do it THIS way..... you are going usher in the end of the FUCKING WORLD!" thing is so RETARDED!.
If you are playing in a orchestra setting in a GROUP of people..... sure..... you don't want every other violin to be pointing to the floor and holding their bow like a caveman holds a club..... In that "setting" everyone must be identical because any other way is just not good..... down to the asshole in front row wearing WHITE socks that draws everyone's eyes to his LOUD socks vs. everyone else's black ones.
There are certain things that EVERYONE should do or break themselves from not doing it..... like staring at your fingers while you play.... as if your fingers don't already know where the "notes" are.... It implants bad shit in your brain while you play and when it becomes "habit" your brain craves watching your fingers play and gets in the way.......
I'm 6'4" 280 lbs.... I picked Viola as a noob cuz I thought It would "FIT" me better.... I mean Violin = small and the more steps you go.... cello = bigger, bass=huge..... so Viola size would fit me better.....
Picked up the violin bout a year ago...... and full size is TAD too small.... But.... I adopted the "lazy wrist" and.... i anchor my palm on the very edge of the bottom of the violin where neck meets the body..... When I anchor edge of palm on bottom of violin, my fingers naturally come to rest where "home position" fingers go..... If I need to go 2nd/3rd position..... I just pivot my hand forward while still anchored to bottom of violin..... and go from 1st to 2nd OR 3rd position and back to 1st position without my HAND even MOVING!
EVERYONE'S body is DIFFERENT..... so you cannot and SHOULD not impose a "one size fits ALL" solution and Label it as the only CORRECT way to do it..... and totally rag on someone for NOT doing it that ONE WAY.
When someone is 1st learning.... sure... teach them the "method" for playing a violin.... give them a GOOD foundation/base to start from..... and if they shift to something that is not the ONLY CORRECT way to hold bow, hold/play violin.... if their end result = the ONLY thing that TRULY counts for and means ANYTHING at ALL... don't complicate THEIR method when they produce the SAME or BETTER result as the ONE ONE CORRECT WAY produces.....
I am pretty sure there is no "technique" that teaches you to beat the strings of your violin using your bow like a big STICK!!!!! But.... Michael does just that ALL the time. When he is in a group and the "spotlight" moves to someone else..... he will often just beat the strings with his bow to produce the "percussion part" in a group that has no percussion in it.
OK!!! with THAT being said....... Guess what????? Just when you think your ONE SINGLE way that is the ONLY CORRECT "system" to POSSIBLY even BEGIN to pick up and play a violin is being challenged and tested by all the "lazy" techniques people use....... Michael takes your "ideology" of what "violin" and "viola" SHOULD BE..... and the whole debate over which one can do what and what one is BETTER for whatever reason........ Ready to get your mind blown???
Michael is NOT playing a VIOLIN!!!!!! He is NOT playing a VIOLA!!!!! Pause the video just about anywhere...... then COUNT the strings on his instrument...... He is playing a....
VIOLAN!!!!!!! Your small ideology of "ONE WAY = CORRECT. Any other way = FUCKING NOOB!"...... he said fuck ALL YALL!!!!! I'm gonna take a C String and slap it on my violin and do shit NOBODY can do!!!!! LOL!!!!!
Not only does his customized/rigged bridge support a 5th string but now go down to the scroll/peg box and count the pegs..... he modified the peg box to accommodate a 5th tuning peg for his 5th string!!!!!
      He has a natural E A D G C open strings on his instrument!!!!!!!!

Starting to think aliens walk amongst us. But I met Michael a few years back on a bluegrass cruise and he's pretty much down to earth. He can play any instrument besides fiddle and tear it up.

Mind blowing. I'd give up fiddling except that I enjoy listening to myself play despite the difference between my feeble attempts and this towering genius. I like the fiddle too. I already got a Luis and Clark cello that I can't play, why not a super carbon fiber five string?

Fiddle = Pat your head and Rub your stomach..... then switch them back and forth as FAST as you can for 3 mins straight...... If you can do THAT then you can "fiddle" good! Orange Blossom special..... that crazy fast super complex song really boils down to 1 & 3, 2 & 4 on 2 different strings/double stop at same time then you switch to 2 & 4, 1 & 3 for the next double stop/chord note back and forth..... if you can do the pat/rub switch nonstop real fast for 3 mins..... the main run in OBS is pretty much same thing, just on 2 strings vs doing it on head/stomach :)

It is baffling that he can play at all the way he holds the bow. But the playing is as good as it gets for this piece.

Michael gets asked if he's as good as Charlie Daniels..... and says something like everyone "wishes" they were as good as the "legend"...... Charlie Daniels is the "Little Leagues" compared to Michael.
