The Lich's Lantern is especially delicious and evil. It would make a great McGuffin, or central quest item.
It reminds me of the dark lantern from Over the Garden Wall. Would be great for a Lich that resides in a dark forest
The lantern item is genius. I love everything about it
- Robe of Useful Organs🤣❤️
I actually came up with one. Here it is:
Soul Canister: this glass canister, originally invented by the famous Archlich Acererak, is worn on the back of a belt by the lich. Its effect is that it can be used as an alternative material component when casting the spell Soul Cage. The canister can hold 12 souls at a time, as opposed to just one.
In addition, the user of the canister can attempt to suck any incorporeal undead they encounter into it, the undead spirit having to make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw.
The famous Soul Monger that Acererak used during the Tomb of Annihilation adventure was an advanced, scaled-up form of this device. Acererak invented it to get around the hassle of collecting souls one at a time to feed to his Phylactery for him and his followers.
The thought of Dragon only magic items has my mouth watering
Yes please!
Oof that Kelemvor item is such a great story hook. Have a repentant lich/vampire/other powerful undead who had the item stolen from them by someone who wishes them to remain undead who tries to recruit the party to recover it
Thankyou, was happy my item got a mention :)
Also for a new magic item competition- magic items for tavern owners!
YES YES YES. YESSSSSS
Magic jug of ale that flys around and fills mugs when a coin is placed in a pouch. Ow new idea
A set of 99 mugs and 2 empty chests enchanted at a cost off 50000 gold by a mage one chest is given to the mage and one to the tavern owner. when an empty mug has 6 copper pieces are drop in the mug the patrons preferred drink magically fills the cup. And the 6 cp will be teleport 50% will go to each chest . If the mug is removed from the premises of the tavern a note will appear that read "if im not returned you pay the cost" and if they dont return the mug with 24 hours the cost of 505 gold price will be take form there wallet or there belongings and yes this will happen at the worst time thin a new note will appear "will return if you return"
COMPETITION: Stein of Shattering- This deceptively simple looking stoneware stein has a runic inscription carved around the bottom face. Upon breaking this stein, it appears upon the shelf set by a command word of your choice, unbroken and completely clean.
COMPETITION: Haver Seat - A magical chair which augments the senses. While sitting in the chair food, and drink taste better.
The chair is tied to a table with three commands. One to put the chair upside down on the table. Another have the chair pushed in under the table. The third is barkeeper only command, "Take it out side".
The chair sticks the patron to the bottom of the seat chair. The chair walks to outside of the establishment then ejects the seated individual then walks back into the establishment to resume its position.
Part two of the necrotic boogaloo
Honestly this should become like a "Themed Hombrew Items" kinda series.
We should do Goblins Next!!
no, hags
@@gobbelgub4031 oh boy, that's a deep rabbit hole.
I love the idea of an item that makes you only talk in goblin when worn but you effectively have advantage on persuasion roles with them.
King Smirsneak's club of stabbing, is a +3 melee enchanted weapon. It's a legendary weapon of a goblin warren near the sword coast, appearing as a club with spear head tied to it. Due to strange gobnoid magiks the spear head deals bludgeoning damage equal to a +2 club, and getting hit by the club part deals piercing damage equal to a +1 spear.
I would love to see a video talking about Dragon magic item the scaly boys need some more love.
If you have the work “Ezmerelda’s Encyclopedia of Evil” one of it’s many sections, on Liches, has an entry for a creature called a Grisgol, which is essentially an animated phylactery. The phylactery forms the heart of a construct, but it is surrounded by spell scrolls and magic items that all fly together to form a humanoid construct more than capable of defending itself (although it usually just uses one of its spell scrolls to escape, casting something like teleport or plane shift).
One original idea I personally had for necromancers was that a necromancer could combine their skills with reanimating corpses with skill in artifice to imbue their zombie minions with all sorts of gadgetry features such as detachable arms with chains tying them to their body, a projectile weapon like a dart gun, small flamethrower, or even a self-destruct bomb being stored in their torso. I would think that a practice like this would actually be common, and any necromancer worth their salt, would far from just randomly animating any random corpses nearby, would instead seek to customize their undead minions, surgically designing them to maximize their effectiveness.
I toyed with an ideal of a high level Wizard wishing to avoid lichdom. Because that’s icky. So he makes the most obvious choice in 5e, and goes with Clone. (This specifies up your clones age. And upon specific over general actually deages you.)
However even though his renames are inert, and cannot be used for reanimating he gets an idea. He strips all the flesh, and uses a metallurgical technique to electroplate the entire corpse. He performs whatever enchantments he thinks he needs. He gathers armor, covering clothes and animates it. And since the animate dead spell says the GM provides the Stat block, and the DMG specifies the skeleton has a form of (medium?) armor, and weapons, we can easily presume that the given remains supply said weapons and armor, and they are therefor proficient. Because Skeletons do add their proficiency to their weapon attacks IIRC.
A little DM fiat could do all kinds of interesting things with that. Ring of Mind Shielding allowing your Skeleton to wear your ring if you die with it on. Ring of Spell Storing.
I had an idea for a lich magic item "The scent of life" a perfume bottle that produces a scent masking the stench of death useful for intelligent undead who frequent civilized areas where creatures with advanced olfactory senses dwell such as beast folk or dogs
Because there's no point to how much magic you use to make yourself look alive if you still smell like a corpse
What about weapons powerful enough to be patrons for a hexblade
Ilithidkind items would be facinating
Tie-Dye Dracinomicon Mask of Illithidkind - Once attuned, the mask is absorbed by the wearer’s head and causes the wearer to grow facial tentacles, but gives them telepathy and the ability to read minds.
Also, the “Tie-Dye Dracinomicon” sounds like a magic tome that is used to fuse different types of chromatic dragons together. If we do a Dragon Item video, I might use this.
@@Im-Not-a-Dog oh? Facinating i may just. Have to take that into account
Celestial only items would be neat
A competition on new concepts for undead monsters could be fun.
I had idea's going in the opposite direction, magic item's that require the users soul to power a link to the positive energy plane. Only one was ever made as a prototype weapon of mass destruction against Atropus. The idea was a kamikaze mission that would require hundreds or even thousands of these weapons to be used.
Love the vapors of vistigiel vitality. Using that in my next game. My players won't see it coming that the ghost opposing them is actually a Lich. They will be scrambling to figure out how to lay them to rest.
Suggested themes
Forbidden tome- focusing on books of dark magic, forbidden lore and the curses they may carry.
Fae theme- items operating on strange and absurd logic.
Bestial monster theme.
Steampunk theme.
Planar theme.
I wish AJ to make a good living here. I'll keep watching even the commercials.
The sheer amount of potential of all these items is absolutely brilliant! I absolutely loved how creative stuff like the robe of many organs is and the variety of consequences for the living to use this.
For another competition having Dragon magic items makes the most sense since that was a topic in another video. I would also love to see what people can came up with for Spelljammer/Planescape based magic items. Either way, amazing job to everyone involved!

Awe man the lantern and the map is going into my game I have with my daughter. Perfect glad I heard this today...
Hey, I'm happy to hear my map is being used for others' games. I hope its a blast!
I had a blast reading these and it's even better with you narrating them!
Such devious minds you have. Scary... And cool! Hahaha. What about trying the opposite? For example celestial items that turn evilness into goodness? Or neutrally aligned items held by Norns, such items that can twist, enforce or deny fate?
^BUMP
That might be a really cool idea for a super powerful lich, who has been roped into something beyond even their own comprehension and has achieved absolutely insane power being tied to the whims of fate, but being unable to interact directly with anything or anyone that had an actual Fate (as opposed to the generic fate of death).
Sure, they're indestructible until fate says otherwise, but they cannot just do what they want and have to work towards balancing the fates of good and evil.
TL;DR a neutral aligned lich who has been forced into maintaining balance might be really cool.
They don't need to be neutral to serve that purpose. I would think the kind of obsessive drive that evil can provide would work better. Evil is just selfish. Putting their goals before all else. What if the evil being's goal is to aid the forces of good? A real the ends justify the means type. And have the flexibility that comes with not giving a damn about what other people think. Only caring about results.
Feycourt items!
Bizarre far realm magic-like items
The magical items for the fiends of below! The Devils of Hell, the Demons of the Abyss, any of them would be great!
Fey items- magic treasure, fey food and drink with crazy effects, Fey-made cursed items, etc.
The skeleton key (i know dumb name): a lich could use the key to curse a lock anyone who try to pick a lock cursed by an skeleton key must make a constitution save if fail they will have one of 2 efects numb (dexterity reduction) or blindness, aditionaly i high level necromancer could use the skeleton key to open any door once per day.
OK so how about some Items for Aberrations like Beholders, Aboleths, and any other alien type creature.
Magic Item competition idea - sentient magic items
Oh hot dog another video.
Darklit lantern should also reveal invisible creatures/those with 15 ft of the lantern in the ethereal plane & reveal an aural outline of creatures in whole cover similar to the effect of tremorsense.
A great video. I love how the community come out for this contest. There were so many good ideas that got turned in.
High-5’s for everybody.
Love the video, competition was great to read through and listen too.
Also, dragon items when?
Maybe the next competition could be about items for only mindflayers or when you do your deep imaskari video you could do a competition on the missing imaskarcana and what they could be?
Ps also great video! had a lot fun writing my mosquito bewitching ring for the competition!😁
Loving the lich magic item videos!
You've been doing a lot of videos covering many of the awesome evil entities in the d&d multiverse, any chance of some videos covering some of the heroes?
(Obviously there are less heroes then villains, since the adventurer's are normally heroes, but there's got to be a few out there! )
Oh there are LOADS of them, usually the focus is on characters from novels.
Hopefully next time I’ll make the list. Good job AJ
Phenomenal job everyone. We need more videos like this to show off our creativity and our wicked senses of humor
Feindish items would be fun
Holy shit, I just realized that Rasputin from Anastasia is a lich!
He has one of those damned lanterns!
Liches actually come from slavic mythology. A slav hid his soul in a pin inside an egg.

.. basically yes. Trapped in limbo because his phylactery (the green lantern) is stuck there with him, until he finds a way.
This was really fun. Especially because an OC of mine that isn't related to DnD (but after I got into DnD has certainly been influence by it), is a lich with a number of magic items in his arsenal.
This was a good exercise, and a wonderful source of inspiration.
Items for only Fey would use?
You have such a creative audience.
...we should absolutely do unique sentient items 👌
Aww man my Corpse Seeds weren't evil enough for the honorable mention list. Still these are some awsome item's and I will take notes.
What were the corpse seeds?
@@davidshinn8801 A handful of small cursed gems left inside the pockets or whatever surviving gear an undead is still wearing. The gems teleport inside the bodies of any nearby creatures and curses them with pneumonia if they fail a daily dc 15 will save. If they fail three saves they die and become a zombie. I have a more detailed description in my comment on AJ'S first Lich magic item video.
That idea certainly got my attention Robert, but there were SO MANY great ideas!
AD&D2ndE, Ravenloft: Van Richten Guides to Liches and Ancient Dead/ Mummy.
That book had a very nice list of cursed items created by the lich.
When 3rdE came out, easier lower level necromancer items.
You should do something with what is magic in the Far Realm. Far Realm magic items. That sounds good

The FARgotten Realms
Fantastic idea.
Maybe on a video about the far realm.
We can see how many bloodborne fans watch.
And one more vote for magic Far Realm stuff .
I'm also a big Call of Cthulhu , Bloodborne and darkest Dungeon fan .
I forgot to mention the effects of one the paired items for my entry even though it didn't win I'd still appreciate feedback on it.
The Ring of Klous Mou when used separately of the sword by a living being grants two affects depending on whether the side of beast or man is facing outward.
Man grants +3 to charisma exceeding the cap of 20 and granting the ability to cast charm person with a DC of 18 once a day... But with each passing day of the ring being worn without use of the sword it drains charisma by one boosting the effect of the rings enchantment by one until the wearer hits a score of zero at which point they die and rise as a ghoul.
With the side beast outward it gives a bonus of +5 strength. With each day that passes the wearer becomes more and more prone to violence as they slowly lose intelligence, boosting the enchantment of the ring until they hit zero. Dying and raising from the dead as a wight.
In both cases the resulting creature is compelled to seek out the sword of Klous Mou and either unite the items (killing said creature instantly) or die at the hands of its wielder effectively ensuring said person will wear the ring and start their slow decent into vampirism.
21:07 That's how I always interpreted Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting
this is where having a spelljammer campaign would be more fun. What's uranium to a Lich but a way to power things with none of those silly safety protocols the living need?
I love liches they are my favorite creature in DnD and fantasy in general
Hags would have excellent and unique magic items.
1.) Pickled zombie frog, +20 to jumping check with +10 movement to swimming. If licked the licker comes under the spell effect of Phantasm Killer or Hideous Laughter.
2.) Rabbit doll, animated skeleton under the doll's padding. 3.5rdE system rules, 4th-level Lesser Planar Binding combine with Bestow Cures. " Chucky "
3.) Lucky rabbit's foot, +20 jump, Expeditious Retreat but also under the effect of Bestow Curse minus 4 dexterity. " twisted ankle."
Could a vampire necromancer transition into a Lich? These are awesome objects of power. The dark lantern has some features in common with some lore on the Hand of Glory as defined in some French legends as opposed to other parts of Europe.
Well, depends.. if you think Vampires are undead with a soul, then yes, if they don't have a soul, then no. It's really that simple.
Hands of Glory man...
Celestial Items? The heroes need some items that can be good but hugely risky
Clicked so fast on this!
Can a giant become a lich?
Absolutely
@@AJPickett That sounds horrifying... are there any examples in lore of this?
@@Benjamintheartteacher I'll have to check.
I vote for an underdark items video & contest
I really enjoy the story you could create with the kelemvor item.
For the next challenge, I say let's come up with some new Goblinoid magic items. Let's say two winners for each type: goblin, hobgoblin, and bugbear
They could be perfectly ordinary items (the chieftains club for example), but if the clan is large enough and there's enough belief in the items power it DOES have power, kinda the same as belief empowers gods...
@@Zasek2112 maybe expand and submit this idea if the goblin video does come up
I'd love to see what kind of items talented goblins would create
@@Booklat1 When I woke up this morning I had an inspiration for this, altho I'm basing it around an orc warchief's mace or the shaman's staff. When the hordes size reaches 10,000 and for every 10,000 above that it gains +1 and another ability(mace of striking, mace of command ect) up to a +5. At 50,000 it also gains the notice of the orcish pantheon, they may hear Gruumch speak to them in dreams, orc's close to the chief will have noticed small changes over time that can no longer be denied. The shaman (or chief, whoever doesn't have the weapon) will almost certainly challenge them at some point and lose, but the chief will lose an eye in that duel and the horde will take it as a sign of Gruumch's personal blessing. At this point the rest of the world is in serious trouble.
The exact horde size per +1 and abilities I leave up to the dm that puts it in a campaign, custom it to whatever monsterious race you like. It's a template.
i still like the ring that causes hp gain and stat increases when it comes into contact with negative energy or necrotic damage... growing until it's a dependency, and the character either needs to constantly lose Hp or commit evil acts to sway the effects, as if they were suffering from the hp gain from being in the positive plane... except being fueled by unavoidable negative energy- would make a neat item for a cleric or treasure hunter, too involving to allow them to abandon their course of actions
Good video AJ
That Lantern is really frelled up!
Fantastic video man! How about the next Magic Items video featuring Elemental magic?Earth, Fire, Wind, Water....heart?
A video I didnt know I wanted but now love❤
I thought mummies got their energy from the postive energy plane as per van richten's guide to the ancient dead.
Time to investigate! *rolls initiative*
Man of culture I see.
I like the items attuned to the undead that give negative effects to the adventurers if they attune to them. My take on it would be when attuning to the item, a jolt of necrotic damage would hit the character with a CON save for half damage. If the damage received reduced the character to half hit points the character would not be able to attune to the item and could not attempt attuning to the item for 24 hours. If the character is able to attune to the item, it functions normally.
Not SPECIFIC to Undead, but I can see a "Map Of Vengeance," that many would seek. Sought by both revenants, & incorporeal undead who were created from murder victims, this looks to be a sheet of parchment, with indecipherable runes on it. It exists simultaneously on the Ethereal Plane, & Physical Plane . With the expenditure of hit points, in the form of cutting one's self, the blood or undead equivalent rearranges the "runes" into a map showing the location of where those who have most wronged the user are in the world. If their visages are unknown it will reveal those as well, obviously for a murder victim, or their survivor that will be the killers. If destroyed the map will reappear elsewhere on the same Plane.
I love it.
Interesting idea for an item a lich might use to compel such undead to its service by giving the undead the ability to have allies who can share in the hunt. And the allies are obviously compelled to aid by greed or need to please the lich.
Damn. As if liches weren't already some of the most badass monsters in the game, now they are just that much more impressive. XD
Illithid Items, anyone?
The Vial of Executioners Preservation.
Place this Vial below a gilatine. It collects the heads and stores them whilst simultaneously preserving their brain function essentially keeping them alive as a disembodied head in a jar ready for future consumption. A safe and secure method of preserving your food.
Imagine your players walking down a hallway full of jars with heads in them trying to scream out for death.
Thank you! 😁
Intriguing, but then again D&D is well known for homebrewing new items, settings and the like.
This was alot of fun.
Well if Liches have eons to make magic items, there should also be a generous amount of druidic items I would think.
Even older would be the massive amount of dragon and giant items.
Haven't heard of a Lich giant, but there must've been some wouldn't you think AJ?
Base on a given playing group and who is running as DM.
I start off playing AD&D2ndE at my first game shop a couple of years before 3rdE came out. And I met snow flake over size thirty year old man child that were a bunch of murder hobos whine and complain to the shop owner cause I gave humanoids and fiends class levels to increase their Xp value.
Other than a bunch of excuses, then 3rdE came and all monsters/ creatures had listed average ability score stats, such as frost giants making good sorcerers/ bards. After working out the CR and average party level for xp adjustments we figure out how to create 30th-level characters. In short for easier CR story adjustment, just used a Titan.
With 3.5e , ..I ran a mini campaign of multi class characters, only after about six games in did I switch it up to them playing frost giants. I just used the rules/ guide line to lich creation of AD&D2ndE Dark Sun/ Ravenloft: Psionic Lich.
I still love my animated face mask with a soul bounded bard who does the talking for me. I haz no empathy or emotions, he does ;)
What a high quality video
These were fun. I think you have a very good video series here to fall back on to break it up now and then 😈😈
How about items exclusive to denizens of the elemental plane of fire be your next competition
If I was going to play an evil campaign I would seek to become a lich and make these items before the heroes got to me.
Starting Dm.... My players are going to be unhappy surprise soon.... 😈
How about next we do items with a mind of their own.
Can this include items that contain a spirit, demon, genie, so on, that speaks with the holder? I have several ideas along those lines written down. Including a "Fire axe" that contains an Efreeti and a helmet that's a prison for a prismatic Abishai.
So .. sentient magic items?
Yeah but in a spooky indirect way. Like how The One Ring finds its way to certain people through a series seemingly random innocuous events. “How did this get back in my pocket?” kind of situation.
@@snorgonofborkkad So, like a sword that only appears when absolutely needed, then disappears after its job is done WHEN it's not being observed?
OMG yes. I love intelligent items.
3e had a consumable called blessed bandages. Would automatically stabilise a dying character on use.
Have the characters find a healing kit with most emo, fatalistic drama queen of a blessed bandage in it.
I suggest a competition of lost items or ancient item with unknown origin... so curious or deviant items no longer able to be made from lost or alternative world (( such as the lost empire of the nazerin))
I'd endow a lich with an artifact set of homebrew knucklebones. Magical loaded dice.
Dang, I missed the competition and have a perfect one. TL;DR it's essentially a spellbook that can give any class powerful spellcasting abilities comparable to a wizard. The cost of using the book is slowly transforming into the books creator. A mind flayer's attempt at a phylactery that slowly devours the mind of its user until the body can be claimed.
I suppose an undead version would be the Allip

omg i love that soul lantern XD So much flavor lol
Yeah, I went to high school with the guy who designed it and he’s amazing about lore like that. Always thinking of the next bit of lore
Please do merfolk Magic itens , especially those Who trades fins/legs and legs/fins
I have been looking for any lore on a Lich ( or otherwise) device that captures souls and puts them into armor. I keep finding constructs, not spirit inhabited armor or mobile objects really. Can i get some help?
Little back story.. have a artifact called Garden of Shadows that stores souls from all near by deaths. The artifact is broken, and to big to take anywhere, in that it was intended to be a powersource, but the enchanted temple is sealed by a god. Anyway some smartypants / previous inhabitance proved it can transfer a soul into a suit of armor. My party is trying to figure out how to reproduce that result and more or less recue a bunch of people who died by getting them into suits and problem solving things elsewhere.
So far tho we keep getting golems, animated armor, and spectual skeletons, but no friends souls into the suits, due to a lack of having some kind of correct pathway. Any item, spell, or ritual able to help?
Hmmm... Cast true resurrection on them, it's actually easier and cheaper than trying to imprison their soul in an object which they can animate and direct.
Not lich lore specifically but may i recommend the Eidolon and Sacred Statue stat blocks from pages 193 and 194 of Mordenkainen's tome of foes. The eidolon is an incorporeal Undead of any alignment created by a god. Its only two real abilities are a 60 foot fear affect DC 15 and Sacred Animation where it enters a statue and animates it with multiattack, a slam attack, and a rock throwing attack.
I need to know, where does that last image come from and what does it entail? a three-headed lich and one wearing a flower crown are more bizar to me than the rest of the video.
Could be a skull lord, or cadre of demiliches. Screenshot the image, do a Google image search.
How about non-combat magical items, more specifically magic items that improves player's / character's convience.
I always felt that improving convience is as rewarding as an increase in power while avoiding power creep. Though that's mostly a video game issue.
So, like Horseshoes of the Zephyr and Heward's Handy Haversack?
