  • It's been a week of cup chaos at Wembley with Coventry being beaten by Manchester United on penalties in controversial fashion and Manchester City beating Chelsea... in the same fashion. New changes to the FA Cup are killing it though, and that should be the main story. We need FA cup replays.

    I think a lot of people are overlooking what the “big 6 managers want” with playing less games. It’s not about playing less than the lower league clubs, they want to play similar levels of games as the teams in Spain, Germany, Italy etc to be able to compete in Europe

      Italian teams in Europe play 5 matches in the cup at most.
      Germany has an 18 team league.

      @JoaoFerreira-pj1uc Před měsícem +1

      @@catmeowing4329 you're talking as if the Cup as a whole was cancelled. If the lifeline of 700 clubs is the prospect of playing a big team to a draw so they can play them a second time, then that is some horrendous budgeting by every single one of them. The vast majority of clubs already don't play games against Premier League teams, and those who do don't always draw the first game. Where are all the clubs going out of business here?
      English clubs are so lucky to be in a cup that gives them so much prize money for their matches, and they still complain. It's so baffling. How about they don't bank their entire season on a luck of the draw situation?

    I do agree that there is a lot of game congestion in the year of football, but managers like Pep and Klopp can't say anything when they always want to play their strongest squad in every game.
    Managers need to switch their squad more frequently so that the players don't get burned out so much. That's why Liverpool's first team squad has been injured for half the season. If anything, big teams can use these opportunities against small teams to test the youth team to see how good they are.
    Also, we need to get rid of dumb extra games in the Carabao Cup. Why do the final four teams have to play 2 semi final legs when everywhere else you only play 1 game

    Intro about Exeter City my hometown club put in perspective, and rant really hit the nail on the head. Replays have been an absolute staple of the FA Cup since the inaugural competition in 1872. "F*ck the FA"'s what I say. I am a Southampton fan and in 1976 my club, who were in the equivalent of the Championship, beat First Division title contenders Manchester United 1-0 in the Fa cup final. This is our only ever major trophy (discounting the 2010 johnstone's paint trophy) and our run to the European cup winners' cup quarter finals the following season (still, I might add, as a second-tier team- this was literally like Cardiff or Bristol City getting to the Europa League quarters today) pretty much promoted us to the top flight two years later, and by 1984 we were finishing 3 points off the first division title. We weren't relegated until 2005. Without that cup win, which started with a 90th minute equaliser at Villa before winning the replay, literally changed our history, not only our trophy case but league positions for the next 50 years as well. Being an underdog rather than a big 6 fan who expects to get to the final without even trying, that's what's killing it all. We were the third Second Division side in the Cup final in four years... can you even begin to imagine a single one doing so today?? A mid-table championship outfit in Europe at all?? It all stems from hooliganism, and clubs trying to prevent it by forming the premier league which was a massive pig-out on money anyway, and big clubs getting bigger, small ones getting smaller. The gap between the Premier League and the Championship is bigger than the one between the Championship and the national league!! THAT IS MENTAL!! Revenues for already struggling non-league teams (I literally watched my local semi-pros today) will plummet and the Yeovil's, Torquays, Scunthorpes, Southends, Rochdales, Oldhams, even clubs like Morecambe, will barely, if at all, manage to stay afloat. Scrapping replays is like scrapping the bloody final or banning non-league teams. Biggest tournament in Britain being treated like a Mickey Mouse cup by the rich cash-grabbers *cough* Saudi Arabia *cough* and that atrocious attitude to such a big and romantic competition is being further enhanced by its own organisers. I can't remember who it was that said, in the 1980s, "English football is diseased, and it looks terminal," but it still rings true today. If I've just made that up, I bet Sheffield United's chances of getting relegated that it'll still ring true in another 40 years. If you've read all of that, cheers. And cheers FNG for letting everyone know. Disgrace

    Although I don’t agree with the decision, it could be much worse. In Mexico, they completely scrapped the domestic cup tournament since 2020. The excuse was Covid but they never brought it back.
    Reason being, in 2019 the Mexican FA which is “FMF” started a tournament with MLS clubs known as “Leagues Cup”. Tournament took place during the summer but it was only QF to the final, so teams only played 3 games. At first it was only 4 teams from each league then they slowly increased the teams in 2021 and 2022.
    Last year, all the MLS clubs and all the MX clubs played in the “Leagues Cup” tournament. That’s the tournament Messi won with Inter Miami last summer. Here’s the thing, both MLS and Liga MX paused their domestic league for a MONTH so the tournament can take place. For MLS it didn’t quite matter since they were in the middle of their season, but for the Mexican clubs, their season had just started with 3 games and it got paused.
    That’s not it, ALL THE GAMES took place in the MLS clubs stadiums. From the group stages to the Final. Confirming the tournament is just a cash grab and taking advantage of the Mexican fans that live in the US. (The Mexican national team already has a deal to play ALL their games in the US btw). Club Leon had to stay in an airport overnight because there was a problem with the plane. The only Mexican club that made the semifinal, Monterrey, travelled more during the tournament than they did domestically throughout the season.
    Because of this tournament, the MLS dropped all their clubs from their own domestic tournament known as US Open Cup (The only thing that the US and MLS had that was remotely close to pro/rel) they will play the tournament basically with youth teams. The excuse? Crowded schedule which they created themselves with the tournament. Can’t make this up 😂

    The magic of the cup is still alive and kicking in the early rounds specifically.
    During my time at Uni, i went to the local Non-League sides game, and the club managed to get a tie against at the time National League Torquay Unhed in the Fourth Qualifying Round - the first time the club had got that far since the 1960's, and the prize money from that set the club up for promotion due to being able to upgrade their ground to meet their tier above's requirements.
    To a degree, I do understand the need for player welfare - but if any of the teams should be able to overcome fixture congestion, its the clubs hoarding talent, with up to date sports scientists, world class physiotherapists, and bucket loads of money anyway.

That being said i still think there should be a better solution than scrapping replays though.

    another thing to take into consideration is, get into the heads of the FA and imagine if all the big six of the premier league got knocked out at the first occasion because they played the u19's against a 5/4/3th tier team. That would be a massive hit to the competition, i don't think as many people would still watch the cup games after that, and therefore games would generate way less money. That said, i think that should be a risk that big clubs have to take: either play a strong formation to win or do some turnover to make your startes rest but risk losing. That's what makes a cup competition so interesting in the first place, but you have to remember that it's all made in the interest of the big clubs, who, i completely agree, should not cry about having to play 1 more game against freaking Dagenham & Redbridge or whatever

    Well said, I think the best solution to clubs having different opinions on replays would've been to give clubs the option to settle ties on the day if they both agree to it (e.g. a tie such as Everton v Palace, you could settle on the day with no issues but it's a different story if it's a tie like Newport v Man Utd). Makes it more ridiculous when replays at are still mandatory in qualifying rounds despite them being at 3-4 days notice and without the TV revenue of replays in the competition proper whilst many non league players have other jobs alongside playing.
    Ridiculous how PL clubs complain about playing too many games and needing a winter break but will play friendlies abroad during winter breaks and I'm sure have barely objected to UEFA needlessly adding extra games to their club competitions and FIFA introducing a 32 team Club World Cup.

  • @bonkersdude9844
    @bonkersdude9844 Před měsícem

    Shrewsbury fan here, you may remember when we drew 2-2 with Liverpool securing a replay at anfield back in 2020. The money that resulted from that was essential especially considering the pandemic, without it we would have gone into debt. Even at the time the FA (and kind of Klopp) denied us the possibility of even more money by not televising the game as a result of the under 21s being sent out due to first teamers being 'fatigued'
    The reality is that EFL teams play 8 more league games a season, league 1 and 2 teams also playing in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy and an additional 2 fa cup games. In non league the schedule is even more congested with fa cup qualifying and the fa trophy, not to mention most players also work jobs outside of football. This adds up to even more or equal to the amount of games a top 6 side will find themselves playing including europe.
    There is no doubt to me that the FA is only listening where the money is, the Premier League. The money they keep to themselves could easily save the increasing number of clubs in financial difficulty each year, but it wont as changes like replays being scrapped demonstrates. I think that both the FA and premier league managers should remember that without the football pyramid there is no development path for youngsters, as grassroots dies with it, along with football in England as a whole

And now you have an issue with this doesn't leave a good taste in the mouth. The biggest part I have to disagree with is "play the youth team", how does a manager work so hard picking the right players, play crazy money in wages just to play a youth team and lose. Liverpool plays young players due to injuries mostly last season, the word is due. I think a big club wants to remain a big club constantly, not just in big games. Listen, you 100% right though and I do agree it is unfair for lower league teams, no but. Its a tricky situation.

Can’t see the decision being changed anytime soon. if it benefits teams like Manchester City, then it benefits everyone else concerned , there are far more pressing concerns that contribute to player fatigue than a fa cup replay that could’ve been addressed but if it generates more revenue to those involved it isn’t a problem clearly .

  • @Emmanuelw2Ms
    @Emmanuelw2Ms Před měsícem +1

    This situation about the FA Cup is similar to what's happening in the U.S with America's equivalent in the U.S. Open Cup. The higher-ups of the top division in MLS and some of the teams are currently saying that there are too many games to play and can't be essentially asked to actually participate in the 100+ year old tournament, even though the Leagues Cup, which is the recently created summer world-cup style tournament between MLS and Liga MX clubs that the actual league and some of the team owners pushed for, has been the main reason why there's more games to play in the season. The hypocrisy is on another level, whether in England with the FA Cup or in the U.S. with the Open Cup. I'm just happy my hometown team FC Dallas has balls and said we are sticking with the U.S. Open Cup and playing in it
    (On a side note, FC Dallas kinda has to play in the Open Cup since the guy that founded the club, Lamar Hunt, has his name & legacy honored in the tournament's name and on the trophy and his sons still run the club to this day.)

  • @JoaoFerreira-pj1uc
    @JoaoFerreira-pj1uc Před měsícem +3

    Honestly? The reasoning that clubs depend on replays is so asinine.
    You're telling me that tens of clubs, hundreds even, are risking going bankrupt because of the chance that they will only play one match a top Premier League club instead of two? The vast majority of clubs already *don't* play those matches, or they either win or lose the first match anyway.
    FA Cup having replays instead of extra time in the first place is already anachronistic by several decades. It's in no way more fair, and only leads to fixture congestion for a partial amount of teams, which, again, is in no way fair.
    And guess what? Clubs relying on the FA Cup replay earnings is a horrendous financial risk. How about English directors and managers instead make budgets around the fact that there will be no more replays? The FA Cup is already by far the cup that generates the most prize money for its clubs, a little bit of financial responsibility wouldn't hurt them.
    I agree that bigger clubs can just field younger players, but if the counter argument is "you'll bankrupt irresponsible clubs because they account for stuff that won't necessarily happen", then maybe you should come to the realization that these replays shouldn't exist in the 21st century.
