- On 9th April 2018, Porsche works driver and Le Mans winner Neel Jani established a new track record at Spa-Francorchamps in an untamed version of the Porsche 919 Hybrid.
The Evo lapped the course in 1:41.77 minutes - 12 seconds faster than the race-legal 919 formerly used in LMP1. Here, the Swiss driver tells Autosport what this unshackled lap of Spa felt like and talks us through the functions on his unfeasibly complex steering wheel.

Am I the only one who would LOVE to see the 40 page manual he refers to?
Jonah Beale I would also like to see it
Jonah Beale yes!
My Toyota has more than 40 pages in the manual. Well they figured out that less is more and know to keep things simple. That's how you can tell real engineers from amateurs.
@@rolfen It's not a car manual, it's a driver manual, not how to change the lightbulbs and tune the radio, but the manual of adjusting the boost, how to corner, how to apply boost, how it will response etc...
it's ONLY 40 PAGES ?? i'm starting to doubt it has be written by germans...
What a great guy to be so open, candid and relaxed talking about the details. So approachable, seems like no ego at all. Just loves what he gets to do each day and shares that enthusiasm freely.
Also, this driver is really likable. Not many of those around.
He gay???
ehhh, most of them are pretty cool, worked at the Liege/Bierset airport in my youth, pretty much every F1 pilots who drive on Spa Francorchamps were passing through, they made pictures and signed autograph for free and even spoke with us while waiting for their slot to take off. Michael Shumaker is nothing like the reputation he had back then, he was a very nice and shill dude.
@@aslatabistaalphonso4250 wtf
@@aslatabistaalphonso4250 Huh?
Absolutely amazing insight. Crazy how there's a button for the car to automatically change gears since it accelerates so quickly.
Not that amazing. F1 cars from 1993 had that lol
VR gaming Content excuse me, factually incorrect? The Williams FW15 had auto upshift and downshift buttons until the driver got back to shifting himself.
VR gaming Content I suggest you look at the 1992 and 93 f1 cars. You're not really smart are you? You shouldnt just assume.
VR gaming Content hahaha. What a comeback, You really upset me! In future look on Wikipedia or some other source online, about certain F1 cars, before assuming.
Formula One DID have automatic transmission, I don't know for how long. Then the fans complained that it had to be more with skills and not by electronic assists, so they got rid of it.
Wow, I had no idea the car was so internally adjustable and all that communication/feedback with the engineers . . . wow these guys really need to be at the top of their games in these rocket cars. Thx for sharing this!
2:52 crazy.
Superb video, thank you Autosport. I strongly appreciate how much of Neel's explanations you left in. Priceless technical insight.
I LOVE this video. Hearing Jani speak about the car in such depth is wonderful.
Incredible, mind blowing insight. Great Video!
Great insight, would love more like this.
2:50 ... holy smokes!
CeruleanVaporeon _17 lol i mean the mercedes is faster, already beat this car in spa
Khebab Nurmainbred which mercedes please? The project ONE?
Can't wait for f1 Q3 in Spa so we get a comparison between this and f1
But with a sim setup and Project Cars 2 you are spared the testing, also inevitable death. I had to look it up after trying it, was hard to believe. It's...just...insane. Reminds me of the Chaparral 2J, minus the crazy vacuum 😄
Awesome car, great driver😍👌🏻🔥
I love the limb home feature.. :D
Very interesting!
2:52 damn.... its so fast! its like fast forward effect... crazy
Is a spaceship! Amazing
I read it had a flywheel that spun freely n when you wanted extra power. Then it engaged with the crank shaft to act like a turbo. I think they said it spun around 50,000 rpm to store the energy. N thats why it accelerates the way it does.
So the flywheel spins at 50,000 rpm. Probably has a differential to prevent destruction. The flywheel drops down to whatever the rpm of the engine is and kers or reversing the diff. The flywheel charges back up to top rpm using excess wasted potential torque. Driven by the electric systems n motors
Very complex indeed
what a car
You heard the man- Porsche’s race cars go to “eleven”.
SPINAL TAP
All that buttons and settings are too complicated. Even during the 90's the driver had to at least adjust the boost pressure and brake bias. Now there are hundreds of them and the driver must do himself while speeding over 300km/h. RESPECT.
My dad is the best friend of neel he saw me as a kid and he gave a helmet to my dad that now i use for kart btw the helmet i use is the one at 1:53
Neel jani = from switzerland? If yes, i repaired he‘s fiat coupé 20v turbo
He lived near Biel right?
The_black_Frank_White yes that‘s correct!
It is an absolutely tragedy that Porsche and this car aren't at Le Mans for the foreseeable future. Damn you VW for diesel-gate. Grrrr....
Joshua Randall the prototype class was boring anyways. I’m happy it gets replaced
They're going into Formula E. Formula E isn't exciting now, but will be soon.
Who cares about LMP1, when they've got the straight-piped RSR.
@After_Midnight LOL I completely agree, the RSR is the best sounding car on the grid right now
@@nikomoin7604 Not really boring. It was a brilliant concept just too many restricting rules.Take away those restrictions you get insane cars like the EVO
1:16 Thought they fast forwarded that bit 🙀
I say the steering computer in his hands costs 50.000 €.
5:10 Going to 11 is "Limp Mode"?!? It should be "Crazy Mode"!
This is crazy kkk this is not a car,its a Jet , i love this kkkk
The engine is 2 liters??? Wow 🤯
After listening to Neel, it sounds he's driving a plane, not a car. I wonder what their social media status is when they get oriented on the car: "It's complicated"? ;)
Did anyone else hear the rotary engine at 4:10
V12 ? he means flat 12 right ?
soundofeighthooves Both are fun! Don't discriminate against big engines : p
@ 2:50 AYFKM ?
Next step is automated side skirts for more ground effect..
And then they add the fan, and then the car corners at 8G and makes 2G-3G starts -- will the driver survive?
2.0 liter v4 engine? Somebody explain this to me in 1:01
WEC allowed teams to pick different engines, so you had Toyota with V6, and Porsche with V4. Audi had 4.0 V6 TDi...
Its a lighter and more compact engine design as other 4 cylinder engines (such as inline 4 or flat 4). This will allow them to package the engine and hybrid technology better.
It's a 2.0 liter V4 engine. There, I explained it.
The car has a 2-liter (2000cc) V shaped 4 cylinder (which means ~500cc per cylinder) engine. If you're talking about how it managed to produce about 720bhp, then it's because it uses race fuel (most likely ethanol, probably E85, since it has a better consistency when combusted), the car is tuned for performance (though I'm not sure about the whole power and torque curve), and obviously it has forced induction. Whether it is only turbocharged or twincharged (turbocharged and supercharged) I'm not sure. Though I never heard a belt whine in the Nordschleife world record footage Porsche provided, so I assume it's only turbocharged.
Thanks guys! I thought there are no v4 engines
The fact Porsche decided to go with a V4 rather than a 4-cylinder boxer, makes me wonder a lot of things...
Learning 30-40 pages to drive a 220 MPH hybrid race car. The immersive experience is unrelenting.
not just learning, but memorising
@@ValentineC137 that's what learning is
That thing is part fighter jet
Ok, why is the speed in this video in mph? Please use kph, Neel even talks about speed in kph but you guys display speed in mph, why??
Autosport is a british media outlet and they use mph. Its not exactly hard to figure this out.
Aggnog
Yeah, but still...
Autosport.com is focused on international motorsport, so using kph is better.
And in motorsport, especially open wheel and endurance, they use kph instead of mph.
Even British F3 uses kph. I mean cmon.
Rémi Rooms boo hoo
~1.6 km/mi. 1.6~1.5 so just multiply by three and divide by two. 200mph * 3 = 600 / 2. ~ 300kph. Not a bad thing to just know that 320kph is 200mph, 160kph is 100mph and judge it from there. If you ever really, really need the exact speed (which you probably don't!), this is fine to guess with!
Thanks for the feedback, Rémi. We'll include KPH and MPH next time.
The driver get tested... damn.
This is basically an F1 car already lol.
F1 car not restrictions will smash this record
source?
More busier than a fighter pilot
who uses mph anymore?
ROFL... V4 engine at 720bhp... Now put that on a motorcycle.
You would never ever be able,to fully open the throttle but it would be fun trying.
It is faster than F1 becouse its AWD.
TheEryk03 no. just, no.
а щееd you morons think probably becouse its heavier.
TheEryk03 fwd cars suffer from understeer due to the fact that the front tyres are doing all the work. same thing with awd, the front tyres are still doing lots of work which can cause understeer. although awd is way better than fwd, rwd is still the king.
а щееd you wrote typical moron's bullshit spread all over. If AWD would be worse than RWD then this heavier AWD Porsche would not do better times than F1. You. Moron.
TheEryk03 the drivetrain doesn't determine a cars performance, the technology does. Formula 1 cars have to follow rules but this car doesn't.
ridiculous the tech available to these guys on the steering wheel.
Imagine having to constantly be tuning and clicking these buttons over a lap (While dealing with traffic when it comes to Le Mans). Things like break balance and fuel mode might need to be adjusted between every corner.
F1 pole will be within 2 tenths this year
Midnight Reggie with a V6....as opposed to a V4
Trance 9 haha what does that have to do with anything. Its 2.0 litre V4 vs 1.6 litre V6 the Porsche has a bigger battery too. More downforce, more power and movable aerodynamics. The only thing the f1 car has an advantage over it is mass and faster drivers
Midnight Reggie obviously they don't have faster drivers if the Porsche drivers are beating their records.
The F1s are smaller and lighter and FYI more cylinders are usually more advantageous. SMH
Trance 9 there is a reason why Porsche decided on the v4 configuration and that is torque. Its a bigger engine. And yes top f1 drivers are faster than lmp1 drivers. A lot of these lmp1 drivers tried to get into f1 and weren't fast enough
Midnight Reggie lmp drivers are endurance drivers several of their races are longer then the typical 90 min to 2 hr F1 races. These Porsche drivers in the lmp aren't F1 drivers...they seem to prove you wrong.
My civic will beat it😎
Mlgamer 62 When comparing price yes, yes it would.
Would you want to have 100 000 civics to drive until they brake or 1 f1 car that wil cost you the price of 1000 civics to just go drive it for the weekend around a track?
all that to break a f1 record.
a f1 car simple go to track
That's not why they built the car. It's a tribute to Porsche's Le Mans history
V4 engine? Not a Porsche then
Wayne Griffith very American way of thinking lol
only 12 year old boy kids commente here about this . off course an f1 car is much faster than this amazing car. in the 15 tracks of the world championship only is spa this 919 would be competitive against a F1. but with a simple v10 and no fuel regulations Hamilton or vettel would be 8 or 10 seconds faster than this ilegal car
they don't realize how much amazing technology this car has.
Its 2018, learn the Metric system, not that hard.
Almost as crazy as Teslas
"We push A, E, 4,........ then OK".
Porsche needs simpler UIs.
A simple Fi Car with normal V6 and full of restrictions Will smash This iligal car Record. Dont se the point
Check the Nurburgring and Spa-franchorhamps... lol....
nurburgring??? hahhahaha a redbull f1 did 4.58 in 2012. and in spa the race is only in august.with out ristrictions and with with normal fuel sistem and traction control na f 1 car does in spa about 131 or 1.32, but even so in august i see you here to tell that a normal mercedes or ferrari from vettel or Hamilton did 1.35. any bet????fanboy
sources?
Porsche is gonna look rather silly when their record for their completely unregulated car gets beaten by the F1 cars.
not at all.
Why would that make them look silly? It's a completely different class of car.
+mondayfool Yup. And honestly, F1 cars weren't that fast until they added larger, softer tires and wider wings to begin with. The current F1 cars also have been designed to the point that they can't even race properly without DRS + 2 second a lap advantage. It's a shame top marques have quit the sport and gone on to Formula E.
919 Evo isn't really "unregulated"... just modified outside the regs. What do you think an "unregulated" car would look like, Dong? It wouldn't be an F1 car. The open wheel design alone is dogshit that no engineer would ever do.
In case you missed out this car has beaten the record set by Lewis Hamilton in an F1 car.
