Chevrolet SS Manual - One Take

  • We reviewed the 2014 Chevrolet SS when it was new, itself a virtual copy of the Holden Commodore down in Australia. But it was automatic transmission only. Now, for 2015, the Chevy SS comes with a manual gearbox and magnetic ride suspension. The want is strong.

cominacatcha LOL Thanks, I'm good. I live in Charlotte, NC where it shuts down for the expectation of a dusting. I grew up in the northeast and used to enjoy driving 3rd gen f-bodies and other RWD winter beaters in the winter. RWD car with snow tires and a couple bags of salt in the trunk and you have a budget drift car. It's what I miss most about living up north. Waking up around 3 am and drifting the snow covered back roads before the plows came out. Now that I'm older with kids I don't get to do a lot of track days or hooning.

TheSmokingTire Chicken or egg? I'm guessing Chevy marketing knew better than product development and they didn't do ads because the car is a bit ill-conceived. It looks like an older cop cruiser with a body kit. Its not a bad design, but not stirring either. I'm pretty convinced with a Camaro-like body with 4 doors this thing would sell very well. The baby boomers (and that's generally who can afford a $45k car) are nostalgic and the younger guys who can buy the things want something sporty looking, not a Malibu with better aero.

Hey Matt, we in Australia are also very sad to see Holden close in 2015, especially in South Australia and Victoria where the factories are. My friend was frankly astounded how cars of this quality are produced by such laid-back people. I was fortunate enough to ride in his VF SS Commodore, and it was indeed spacious, had a smooth V8, and as many features as it did horsepower. The VF is a rightful send off to the Holden manufacturing in Australia.

+ptibab73 I didn't mean to say that there is *no* speed limit (like on the Autobahn), but it's not like in the US where some road safety administrator apparently does the thinking for you. Outside town it's usually 80km/h here in Switzerland, even on a very curvy road. And Switzerland is conservative, I much prefer driving in France or Germany where my point stands even more I think.

    • @DeepDuh
      @DeepDuh Před 9 lety +47

+TheSmokingTire Yes, these things are surprising about the US. Politically the US tends to be very 'liberal' (in the European sense of the word, so anti regulation), but in many areas concerning *personal* liberties like speed limits, alcohol consumption, lingering in public places, behavior with law inforcement officers etc. its regulation are much *more* heavy handed than the so-called socialist Europe. It really doesn't quite fit with the 'land of the free' image. Probably should be called "land of the free *corporations*" nowadays.

American cousins. If you'd like the wagon or ute (pickup) version of this car you'd better be quick if you want a brand new one. With the factory closing this year the numbers in storage are dwindling. You can buy one here and have it converted to LHD in the US. A better bet is to buy a demo or secondhand unit with low kms (miles) on the clock and then get it modified Stateside. I own the wagon version here in Australia and I love it. The weight distribution is a little different (wheelbase the same) and I reckon it handles better than the sedan plus it's a real eye catcher.

So it is 20% less expensive compared to those cars in it's domestic market. And NASCAR as an advertisement in 2017 is nothing like it was in 1997, you might as well be advertising the car to golfers. I live and work around Charlotte NC, NASCAR country, and this car is pretty popular around here due to the mentality of moonshiners running the big cars with big v8’s back in the day. There’s still a lot of wholesome muscle car people here, and this car fits in with the area perfectly.

I used to make videos for Holden Design in Melbourne Australia where these things were dreamed by a bunch of really talented enthusiasts. It was a very secure area, of course, but I was able to wander around and see stuf I probably wasn’t supposed to see like, in one dark corner where they referenced other makes, was a BMW M5 suspension. One the design guys said to me that for the VE platform , from which this was developed, the basic benchmark for handling was the M5- and this was even for the bottom end family saloon. These Holden guys were real heroes. They fought timid GM bureaucracy and some absolute, utter, bastardry out of Detroit to develop what they knew real enthusiasts really wanted. Unfortunately it got virtually no promotional support because of nasty politics. BTW, these are the same guys who were given the poison chalice of a half designed, unbuildable , Camaro to fix and did a redesign to make it viable, although they all thought it was an utter dog!

Brings a tear to my eye knowing these beautiful beasts are soon to be extinct . (Sob). On the bright side , they're going out with a bang. The SS you drove was 350 hp stock , the last versions will be 410 hp, if you go to the upgraded version ( the r8 , not sure if that will be available in US ) the hp increases to 575 . That's not the end of the story , the GTS is the premium and this model , although the figures are not yet released , is expected to be around 630 hp . That's still not the end of the story , as there is a rumour that a limited edition GTS R will be offered , though I have no idea of the specs . I have had my 2015 SS for four years now, its so comfortable! It's heavy but it can scoot pretty nicely. Sure it's not the prettiest car on the road, it's bland looking, but that's the point, It's like being in stealth mode.
Best sleeper made since the syclone/ typhoon IMO

Just thought I'd put some info here for everyone asking in the comments.
This car is designed and built in Australia by GM Holden, and will be discontinued in 2017 due to the closing down of Holden's factories in Australia.
Holden will become a full-importer in Australia, sourcing cars from Chevrolet US, GM South Korea and Opel's factories in Germany and Poland. It's a sad time for the Australian automotive industry as Holden, Ford and Toyota are all closing their factories here in Australia leaving us with zero local car manufacturing.

+alexaescht Remeber that MMA (Mitsubishi) left in 2008 as well. The 380 being a far better car than both Commodore and Falcon, but sadly did not sell.

This is such a good car, its just that dealers are so stubborn thinking they can sell it for above 48K and act surprised when no one buys it.

It costs a lot to export to USA . From Australia .. Plus our high wages in factory's means cars cost a lot Australia made

The G8 GXP are 2009 only. Since they made about 2000 of them, the resale of the cars are still around 25-35 grand. I've seen some guys selling them for 40 grand. Also finding one in a Manual is very hard.

A RWD or AWD mid sized(think ATS but from Chevy) LS powered sedan in the high 30's would be awesome. Awesome color

For reasons unknown, GXP's seem to have appreciated since the introduction of the SS. Resale of GXP's in great condition and low miles are in the mid 30's, up from the low 30's.

As an Aussie watching this vid its a sad day to know that Holden and Ford will be pulling out of Australia in 2017. To hear you Americans rave on about how good the SS is make's me think that Holden has missed out on a great opportunity. Even the Ford Falcon XR8 and XR6 Turbo would be popular in America. I could never understand why Ford never pushed for the Falcon as well? What a shame.
