The 707 grew from the development of the Dash-8, revolutionized civilian air transport, was extremely reliable, durable and yes, is STILL in service with the US Air Force. As a docent at Boeing Field told me on a tour there 15 years ago, the 707 was also the fastest civilian aircraft in production.
Wait, it was never retired. Most were purchased by the Air Force and converted to the KC135 Stratotanker which is still in service to this day.
