Him being the spy makes complete sense when you think about it. Hux's motivations were always selfish, and focused on acquiring power. For instance, when he killed his father using a poisonous bug from Parnassos, he acted in order to increase his influence/power in the First Order (he was acting for personal gain, rather than for the benefit of the FO). Furthermore, Hux had a rival in Kylo Ren, who he grew to despise. Seeing Kylo succeed must have been incredibly painful for him, and he probably thought that the only reason Kylo was leading the FO rather than himself was due to his lack of force powers. This all contributes to Hux being so anger and frustration-driven that he decides to betray Kylo, as he wants revenge. He may also think that if Kylo loses, Hux will have a better chance at continuing to gain power in the FO. This could be a credible idea as Kylo clearly lowered Hux's status greatly, as it seems as if Hux has gone from second in command (leader of the army/navy?) in TLJ to merely a deputy to Allegiant General Pryde, in TROS.
"I don't care if you win. I need Kylo Ren to lose". Snoke was still supreme leader when they blew up the Republic. When Kylo assassinated him Hux switched sides.

I feel like Hux being the spy actually works, it’s just they left out some key development revolving around his relationship with Kylo. His arc is about how much he despises Kylo, and about how eventually that hate and jealousy supersedes his own ideals and devotion to the first order. About how everything he believed in was being ruined by this screaming child at the helm. His chance at witnessing the rebirth of an empire was hijacked by this wannabe Darth Vader, and he just couldn’t bare to see it, he couldn’t take it, so he betrayed his home and cause, just to get back at Kylo. That’s how I see it anyways, but because hux got so little screen time and so little development we never got to see that side of him.
Why do people only remember Hux’s speech and assume that is his whole character. He had way more scenes in the force awakens with him being shown up by snoke or kylo.
In FA it felt more like a power struggle between him and kylo. In TLJ I always thought Hux was punished by Snoke because of Kylo's failure on Starkiller, giving Hux a burning hatred toward Kylo, especially after Snoke's death.
