I’m just so baffled by the fact that the horrors of life in NK are so obvious and widely known internationally but there is nothing anyone can do. Over 26 mln people living in some alternative reality open air prison while the rest of the world is watching, in 21st century
What we all can do is grow our own compassion and love for our own family and neighbor. Most of us can't even have love among our families let alone for international corruption. A lot of time, the things we so that are so horrific to us is basically a wake up call for the millions of people who are living a good blessed life. We all need to love each other more and not be so focused on the materialistic or pettiness that rule a lot of our lives and they reflect on these international horrors.

Annoyed with not being able to spend money on myself as much as usual because I’ve been giving to everyone else. However, I still drive a new nice SUV, have a more expensive home than most and don’t have to even work. Well, I do work hard actually but as a SAHM so I’m very blessed(my husband provides).

I’ve seen other interviews with her but I can imagine there are no words for how it must have felt escaping and realizing how different much of the rest of the world has it. Just seeing the over abundance of food and restaurants and food waste on every corner in the US must still feel completely surreal to someone who grew up eating tree leaves, bugs, rats, and watching people little starve to death. (And I’m not making light of the many issues and poverty in the west by any means but NK is obviously a whole other level most of us can’t really fathom).

Yeonmi is talking about the situation in the country when she was growing up, i.e. during the height of the '90s famine. When, bc of the USSR & Communism almost everywhere collapsing, there was no one left to subsidize North Korea & make up for the disastruous state that the economy was in...
And even then, it was ofc the bottom 20-30% most likely, that had to experience such tough conditions. Things got a bit better from the 2000s onwards, but during the Covid lockdowns the situation was becoming dire again - for the *poorest* parts of the population.
