- On this day in 2000, Docklands played host to its first home and away game of AFL football and in the 20 years since then we have witnessed many great players, inspiring wins and controversies.

That St Kilda vs Geelong game is still the best game I've ever seen. Both teams went into the game 13-0 and the hype was amazing. But the game actually exceeded expectations. I'm not sure we'll ever see that again.

yeah it should be number 1 or 2. Rarely does anything live up to hype like that. But it did and some. Also the highest ever crowd at docklands aswell.

Jonathan Brown Round 6, 2005, v Essendon. First game back from suspension absolutely dominated the game after having 3 different opponents he ended up with 20 disposals & 8 goals 2 behinds. Absolute pleasure to watch that live.

Damn Docklands really be like the opposite of fine wine, it was sooooo good when it was young and just gets worse as the 2010s went on. So much from here is pre-2010 and that proves it. That Jason McCartney game emotional stuff. What a great moment. Fairytales DO come true!

Didn't even know the 2007 Elimination Final with Hawthorn and Adelaide was played here. The roof being open gave it a better atmosphere and viewing experience.
I’d put St Kilda/Geelong at no. 2 behind McCartney.
The hype was incredible, they were both undefeated and it lived up to expectations and then some. Absolute epic.

i think it was because its such an odd player to kick 8. He only played 60 odd games and didn't even crack 100 career goals, yet achieved something only the very best key forwards have achieved over the past 10 years.

10:02 even though Geelong lost, I reckon that is by far the best game ever played at Docklands. I was one of those 54,444 fans and dad and I could only get standing room tickets. The hype leading up to it in 2009 was tremendous with both teams having recorded 13 wins each and going into the match undefeated. There were talks between the venue and the AFL to move the game to the MCG because of the increased interest and expected attendance, but Etihad Stadium refused to give it up. So they came up with a compromise. The game was scheduled for 2:10pm on a Sunday afternoon. At the time, all matches scheduled for that time slot were broadcast on Channel 7 on a one-hour delay starting at around 3:10pm leading into the 6pm news (almost all matches on free to air at the time were a delayed broadcast). Since the match was a rare sellout, the AFL decided to change the start time of the match to 3:10pm so that it would be shown live on Channel 7. The move proved so successful that when the new broadcast deal for 2012 was done, the AFL decided to permanently change 2:10pm Sunday games to 3:20pm. That game at Docklands in 2009 certainly kickstarted a change to AFL broadcasting for the better.

@@benrush7090 Even an Bombers myself I would say that Geelong team was better. 2000 in general was a very weak season in terms of overall quality. That Geelong team faced much greater quality of opposition during their dominant era. Same with the 3 peat Brisbane Lions before them and even the 3 peat Hawthorn side of 2013-2015. Its really no coincidence at all we weren't as good the following season despite finishing top of the ladder and couldn't retain the flag. Most opposition simply got better and it showed in a lot of matches. If anything that Bombers side is slightly overrated kind of like the invincible Arsenal team of the 03-04 season or the current Liverpool side leading the Premier League by a whopping 25 points. Its always important to look at context when analysing and judging these things.
