My wife and I visited Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp in June 2019. While I've read and studied Holocaust history extensively, this was my first opportunity to visit an actual camp. The visit was a very moving experience for us. I hope this short film captures our time there effectively.
The Camp: Located in the Vosges Mountains of eastern France (Alsace region), Natzweiler-Struthof is the only camp remaining on French soil. Its prisoners were mainly anti-German activists and partisans from Nazi-occupied territories. Two-fifths of the 52,000 prisoners died. Some Jews were killed here also, as part of a horrific Nazi medical experimentation program.

Well put together summary of the camp. Thanks. 77 years have now passed since the sickening and horrific murders of SOE F-Section agents: Andree Borrel, V Leigh, S Olschanezky and D Rowden. Such a sad ending for such brave souls. I won't forget them. Nor countless others that suffered and died in this awful place. RIP all.

I visited this camp a few years ago. My father and the man I am named after were prisoners here in the early days of it. They were Dutch resistance fighters. They were 2 of 5 ever to escape this camp.

I visited this place with my Austrian friend who was living in Barr Strasbourg at the time. The place has death and suffering all over it. I just don't know If the great deal of visitors here reflect on their daily personal choices after visiting such a place

One can only hope so. When I visited, there were German-speaking high school groups taking tours as well. While entering the camp, some of them were joking around initially. I even saw a couple of mocking N*** salutes, which were shocking in such a place. However, as time went on, you could tell the shift in their tone. By the time we were in the spaces with the oven and where the medical experiments took place, they were quiet, respectful, and somber. I hope the suffering and evil that took place here really did sink in for them.

@@EscapeTheCloudsOfficial One can only hope that people can live beyond initial shock and horror. Many of the people who found themselves at Natzweiler Struthof had nothing to lose in life had they chosen not to stand against the inhuman nazi philosophies. Many were well-to-do, Lawyers and upper-class people, with demography suited to Nazism. But they decided to be counted with the suffering and that carries costs. My favourite is Dietrich Bonhoeffer, though not entirely perfect he stood up against the excesses.

The guard towers creep me out. I've never seen ones like that, but they are creepy.

I was hoping to see the infamous stone quarry. Can you visit there?

I don't believe so. It was mentioned, of course, but wasn't listed as an available site, nor depicted on the brochure map. What's in the video is everything you could visit. When we went, the gas chamber was also not open. www.struthof.fr/fileadmin/MEDIA/Pdf_Ressources/07_Mediatheque/telechargement/ressources/memento-GB.pdf

Well, it's currently being taken. From what I know, Palestinians are currently experiencing the same thing by Israelis. Yet, nobody is acknowledging that.
