  • For 2024 there's 9 trim levels for the Subaru Outback including the Onyx Edition. You may wonder what is the right model for me and should I go with the 2.5 or 2.4. In this video we'll take the 2024 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition XT out for a test drive to see if it's a great family vehicle in a highly competitive crossover market.

    There are those who are somewhat reluctant to call it a lifted station wagon, but the fact of the matter is that a lifted station wagon with a capable AWD system is a good concept.

      Exactly why I own 2 Outbacks. It's really the last in a long line Japanese sedan based wagons: Camry, Accord, Maxima, Legacy, Civic, Corolla all used to have wagon versions. With the AWD and turbo of the XT, the Outback really is the best and most capable of the Japanese Sport Wagon heritage.

    Plus-It has a Luxury drive feeling more than the Forester had (I have/had both). Minus-Spongy on the XT even, hit the gas and it moves, but there's that split second delay that Turbo or not the CVT still makes. Head unit is slow, when you've turned off the engine, the music keeps playing, very annoying. Eyesight errors start to come in around 10k miles in, then solves itself but this might be a few days, beyond that you'll need to take it in to get recalibrated ($300-$600, or under warranty under 36k). Plus is the sunroof, like it more than the Forester's large panoramic roof, let's be honest if you're the one driving you're not going to see that much anyway. This car also can run off-road like nobody's business. One thing I like about the XT Onyx is the built in Nav (esp in California), and the main display which gives you everything you need, in fact you can turn off the 11" Head unit . (Nav, Radio, etc, all there). Forester didn't have that, and it's wroth the extra 2k or so if you get the Outback Premium trim I think? Wish I had gotten the base engine, XT sucks gas though, afraid to use the paddle shifters and see the needle move, especially when gas is $6 a gallon. 22mpg average if I'm lucky. Kudos to American workers, fit and finish is good (made in Indiana/Engine made in Japan).

    no issues with reliability of the 2.4 I have a 2020 limited xt... regular unleaded gets 23.5 combined after 25,000 miles

    The heated seats with StarTex don’t get hot enough compared to other Outback models.

      Wow, that's something I didn't think about. It gets bitter cold where I live. I grew up with vinyl seats and they were always the worst. Seating surfaces were always: Vinyl -> cloth - > leather. Rebranding vinyl as "StarTex" means nothing. Plastic seats are plastic seats. Rock hard cold in the winter and sticky hot in the summer. It's by far the biggest reason I'm hesitant to get an Onyx because I love everything else about it.

    I still worry about the reliability of the 2.4 turbo. What's your thoughts on that?

      Boxer is already iffy and then inducing power to it is questionable I still want one

      Regardless of brand, turbo equals more parts, more heat, more strain on engine. I would say if you plan only to keep it till 100k miles and trade that maybe feasible. If you want to drive it for 10years plus 200k+ I would say the base non-turbo engine will get that longevity with ease.

    I'm debating on trading my 2018 honda accord for a 2024 wilderness, would that bea drastic change?

      Why do you want a wilderness? it has lower gear ratio and gets even lower mpg. Unless you live in a area where speed limits are mostly 55mph and never get on the hwy and you have nasty winters or you avidly offroad I see no reason someone would want a wilderness.

    What kind of gas mileage does this vehicle your driving get on the highway if your going a long long distances driving most of your time..😊😊😂😂

      It's great actually I have a touring xt going from TX to northern CA, my longest time driving no stop was between 7 & 8 I had to stop because I needed to pee so bad lol didn't even realize I was driving that long
