    The scale is a great idea. I'd point out that you want to use a wide water container (as you did) and not something like a tall, narrow vial (say just a little wider than the stone) because the water level will rise when you add the stone, immersing a bit more of the wire.
    That would increase the total amount of water displaced, making the stone's weight in water appear closer to its weight in air than is actually the case.
    A wide container of the same height obviously holds much more water than a narrow one, so a stone of a given volume will cause a level change proportionately lower.
    You could put a mark on the wire at the point where you want the water level to be to, and adjust the wire after the stone is added, if the level change is too much.
    If you did that, a smaller, more portable water container could be used.

    Miss Starla, congratulations on your video.
    Don't you think you might go further and teach even more about gemology on internet ? Maybe here on CZcams, indeed.
    I would love to learn more and more about this classy and important subject.
    And I am sure there are millions of people who could really enjoy been taught that way.
    Please, think about that.

    Hi Starla, Please explain why in some videos in You Tube they say that the the formula for S.G is : weight in air / weight in water. Other videos say S.G.= W in Air / (W in Air - W in Water). I tried doing both formulas with 10 known different stones. The first formula worked the second didnt. Why?

      @betunhuerta8425 Před 5 lety

      Asking same here

    • @Insower
      @Insower Před 4 lety

      Please read en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archimedes%27_principle The first formula would be correct if the weight IN water was Weight of displaced water
      The only correct formula is S.G.= W in Air / (W in Air - W in Water) and it was used in this video

  • @judaskidd2155
    @judaskidd2155 Před 6 lety

    Just to let you know that the explanation of how Archimedes came up with the formula is slightly different it was not good and silver at the same time it was a jewelled golden crown that was not of uniform shape. He had pondered a way to measure the wright of the crown to give his king a value. While taking a bath he noticed as he himself entered the basin the water rose and retreated. This gave him the eureka moment that he used his weight in carob seeds vs the weight of the displaced water and arrived at the formula for specific gravity. It was proven later by another group of mathematicians by using various materials of known weights to create the tables of s.g. used today

    Hi Starla! You were my professor for Colored Gemstone Grading at the GIA. How does this compare to dividing weight in air by weight in water without the subtraction? Some youtubers say to do it that way but to me that makes no sense. Thanks for your feedback!

    • @starlaturner
      @starlaturner Před 4 lety +1

      Its divided by it's loss of weight in water, so you are right it doesn't make sense. Cheers. I do the FGA program, not the GIA program...

    • @starlatrwc
      @starlatrwc  Před 10 lety +1

      To separate natural from synthetic sapphires you need to look at what is in the stone because the stones will both have the same properties. The internal characteristics will reveal how the stone was grown.
