In my opinion, MJ is the best perimeter defender in NBA history. The guy went through screens without a problem. His presence in the perimeter makes teams be super careful in passing lanes. He was a monster reading offensive switches when the ball was heading to the post (PF and C), K. Malone, Ewing, Olajuwon, and Barckley are witnesses of that. In fastbreak, he always stays around the mid-court to intercept long passes. He was a monster block shots from behind. MJ never gave up on plays, so if you thought that no one will chase you all the way to the rim, MJ will be right there. His best defensive asset was that he was the best at reading offensive patterns or schemes from the opposite team. He was a 9x 1st Team All-Defense, DPOY, 3x Steal champion, 6 seasons out of 13 seasons with the Bulls he reached 200+ steals. In 9 of those 13 seasons average 2.0+ spg.In 4 of those 13 seasons, he reached 75+ blocks including a back-to-back 125+ blocks.
If we go to the playoffs, the dude avg 2.0+ spg in 10 out 13 seasons, and 1.0+ bpg in 6 out of 13 seasons. Let's remember that in those 13 seasons he only played 11 full seasons, two of them were 18 games or less.

It takes time to understand the entirety of MJ's arsenal. I watched a majority of his games and it's hard for me to put into words. I think players were more afraid of his defense than his offense. Offense is either a one or a five man operation but defense is usually one. You either try or you don't. Trying was not an option for MJ. . . it was his make up. His motor ran like Westbrook's on both ends but with all the skills any player could dream of and some no one had ever dreamt of.

You have to remember he was doing this as a shooting guard except for a few times. Not a forward (like LeBron) or center. He wasn't even supposed to be under the basket in most of those blocks.
Here are a few other stats you may not be aware of:
"In an experimental move by head coach Doug Collins, the Bulls moved Jordan to point guard for part of the season and as only Jordan can, he responded with 10 triples doubles in 11 games.
Michael Jordan recorded 10 or more points, rebounds and assists 28 times in the regular season, twice in the playoffs and he has the only triple-double ever in an All-Star Game.
In the 1988-89 season he had 15. including an incredible streak of 7 consecutive and 10 in 11 games that started on March 25, 1989. He needed 3 assists against Detroit Pistons to have 11 consecutive triple-doubles."

All kidding aside during Mikes domination he was always considered the best player in the league with no exceptions, hell even when he came back after almost 2 years and was rusty! No shade at Rocket fans but we all know had he not retired the Rockets would not have won both of those championships. Now the same can not be said about Lebron there have been serious contenders to the crown of best during his reign ( Durant, Curry, Dirk, Westbrook, and now Giannis). Mike just simply played on another level!!! Lebron is a Great player he's just not the GOAT and their is no shame in that realization.

I wore the soles smooth playing bball with my cousins on concrete, then gave them to my brother and he wore them until the soles literally fell to pieces.

    MJ defence
    MJ 86-93 rating 100
95-98 rating 85 ( got lazier on defence but he could due to having pip Rodman and harp all specialist defenders)
    Pippin - 95
Pistons rodman - 100 (being the most versatile defender in nba history) for his size he was here in the pistons
Bulls rodman -95 ( due to being mainly a post up and paint defender not so much a perimeter defender)

GP was a specialist and one of the best. The man had clamps and trash talk for days, but he could guard 2 positions.
    96/100
Scottie guarded 4 positions with multiple all-defensive teams. He was the other half of "the dobermans."
    95/100
Rodman physical and psychological domination defensively. But his defensive rebounds changed the trajectory of games. He was a stopper at 4 and sometimes 5 positions.
    Easy 100/100
MJ guarded 3 positions, but did it at such a higher level than everyone else. Plus his weak-side and help defense was mentally and physically at such a higher level than anyone. Led the league in steals in multiple years. 9 time all-defensive teams. Psychologically he dominated on the defensive side of the floor.
    Another easy 100/100

    MJ was a 100 offensively.
Defensively I would rate him at least a 96 which would have him a combined score of 196/200, virtually the perfect player. Just on these defensive accolades alone you can see he's a special player.
He was the first player in history to be selected to 9 All Defensive First teams.
He was the first player in history to get 200 steals and 100 blocks in a season, it has still only been done by 3 players. (Michael did it twice).
He was the steals leader 3 times.
He's the only guard in history, relative to his position, both in the Top 5 for blocks and Top 5 for steals.
He was the defensive Player of the Year and Scoring Champion in the same year

Jordan - 95 - great one on one defender, great blocks/steals as a guard, as always with MJ when the game mattered he was the best. Negatives...he gambled on defense at times, overplayed passing lanes, mostly Pippen guarded the number one threat.
Payton - 95 - strong one on one, hard worker, never stopped. Negatives...MJ would out muscle him, not the biggest.
Rodman - 96 - tireless, persistent, could guard any position. Negatives...too many technicals, could be dirty, if game did not matter he did not care.
Pippen - 98 - could defend anywhere, strong one on one, always had the #1 matchup, great in lanes.
Uhoh...I think I might be on MJs list after these rankings.

This is what people who were not around to see the Bulls play don't understand. They were the greatest defensive team I have ever seen and I have been watching NBA basketball since the 80's. Especially that second threepeat team. Think about this. They had 3 of the best defenders in NBA history on the same starting lineup. (Jordan, Pippen, Rodman). And then Ron Harper was known as one of the best defending guards in the league as well. Their WORST defender in the starting lineup was the CENTER and he was 7'2 in the paint still giving a couple of blocks a game. I mean do people even remember they had John Salley from the Bad Boy Pistons coming of THE BENCH?!?
I watched many games where the Bulls would come out and dominate the 3rd quarter defensively so much that and they would build up such a lead that the starters didn't even play the 4th quarter. I mean Jordan many times didn't play the 4th quarter because of blowouts and the man was STILL averaging over 30 a game. Bruh..
