Thank you. I have been a Beach Boy fan my entire life. This was not a cool thing to be when I was a teenager. I think most of my peers thought of them as irrelevant eunuchs. I remember in the mid 90's Pet Sounds started to get a lot of praise. The box set gave it new life. It's really makes me feel good when I see young people like you and others get into their music. It's nice to know others out there are as enthusiastic as I am because I never seem to meet them in real life. Take care and sail on.
Sail on Todd!
Todd, you weren’t alone all these years.
Enjoyed your enthusiasm, sir. This band's late 60s/early 70s material STILL sounds amazing!
I got the 6-CD "Super Deluxe" configuration. Love the actual content, but I found the sound to be really odd. I found myself having to boost my spectrum analyzer's 1K band a few decibels, and I never have to do that. There was such a hole in the 500 - 1,000 Hz sound band. Other than that... Greatest box set of all-time, by any artist. The Carnegie Hall discs are the highlight and the discs that I will be playing over and over. Take their career from its beginnings up through Holland, and you have a body of work second only to The Beatles. While there would still be more satisfying music in their future, the group's post Holland stuff was weak in comparison.
Please BRING ON THE BRIAN IS BACK era box set!
This band has scarred me for life though. I remember my brother and myself checking borders every week (pre internet) in 1995 awaiting the SMiLE sessions on their computer. It was TBA and we Kier waiting. With these guys, I won’t believe anything until it’s in my hands. Even Feel flows, it was insane. I never thought it was going to happen.
Hi! Really love your enthusiasm for this music, much like mine but hard to believe I've been loving this music for 50 years! Astounded by the creativity which is now being unveiled on the backing tracks such as Steamboat and The Trader. This music should be on the radio everyday but sad to say it's still not getting the mass recognition it deserves. It's just amazing how they reinvented themselves in the early 70's and managed to produce such artistic perfection. Thanks for keeping the music alive!
I’m glad I was in that era when these albums came out. They were great times, I was in my teens when they came out.
That's so cool man, what a great era!
Love the tie
The first time I saw The Beach Boys was about one week before the Carnegie Hall concert in this set. It was at the now-defunct Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ. A friend of mine convinced me to go to the late show (they did two that night), which started at 11 pm! I went kicking and screaming. But it was the greatest concert I had ever seen up to that time, and I became a diehard fan. Audience members kept yelling for old songs. After one screamed for I Get Around, Mike yelled back something like, Yeah, we’re not here to play the jukebox!
Oh man that is so cool!
I only just saw this vid! I was listening to the Sail On Podcast the other day and it reminded me of the boxset (I got the CD version) & I thought "wait I never saw a Giggens review!!?" So I searched it out! Sharp suit, man! What a great boxset. The newer mix of Carl & The Passions has really helped me like the album more. Before that I always felt the vocals were mixed too low! But it really works for me now! Cuddle Up was always a fav though. It's so beautiful. Up there for me with God Only Knows, Slip On Through & the glorious Steamboat (I love that last one so hard!!). I really rated the backing track and vocal only stuff and so many great songs I didn't know. I may have to dig it out tonight. Sadly someone in the Sail On group noted that it didn't really do the numbers so there may be no more boxsets, which would be a shame as it would be great to hear some 15 Big Ones stuff AND especially the Love You related stuff!! Cheers mate!
Great points man!!
That set is worth having just for Carry Me Home. It's one of their best songs and it sat in the vault for 50 years. What were they thinking?
I hear that!
Great review! Fantastic box set! Your passion and love for these albums just flows. Helped make me explore them deeper too and appreciate this period so strongly.
Such a great era for the guys!
@@Giggens I’ve always been a Beach Boys fan. They’re who introduced me to pop music. But for some reason as I explored deeper into other bands catalogs, I never got past their greatest hits albums. Very ashamed to admit that. But thanks to watching your videos I really started listening to those later albums and thoroughly loving them. Phenomenal music and so overlooked and under appreciated. Glad there’s an advocate like you out there.
This is a great set. Next one should be today and summer days summer nights or friends and 2020
The only review I’ve been so looking forward to,I’ve learnt so much from you over the years,I’m eternally grateful.
Thanks Michael!
I got the 6 cd box set! Awesome!!
Thank youuu Giggens!!! So refreshing to hear such a positive review of the boxset! I was tired of reading all the negative nitpickers from various Beach Boys message boards regarding the sound quality on the remasters. Let's just enjoy this awesome set of music, people!! A 10/10 for me :)
Exactly, there's been so much negativity! This boxset rules!
FINALLY I BOUGHT TODAY THE FEEL FLOWS 5CD SUPER BOX SET!! After years of poverty, Things are GETTIN BETTER (McCartney cit) and one of the first things I needed to have is this. I have 2 different versions of Surf's Up. One of my absolute favourites and as a musician/composer the Beach Boys work 1966 to 1973 is something you MUST study through all your life, because there's always something new to learn that will enpower your composition skills. this box will be the next one!! saluti dall'Italia ps. STEAMBOAT is the song I said my dear ones, when I'll go...I want this song as the soundtrack to my travel at my Final Destination Funeral Party!!! Only Me & Mr.Fulton ;)
Hi Giggens, love your review. Beach Boys..... my life and soul would not be the same without the world's best harmonies. Love all these sets. Love sunshine tomorrow Pet Sounds, smile sessions, Feel Flows snd now this sumptuous feast. Most important band. Every member genius... . God bless enjoy the holidays.
Well said man, happy holidays!
Great Review
I always enjoy you videos
Thank you for watching!
We need 80's boxset....
Another great review, Giggens! 💕
Thank you so much!
Thank you for this thorough and wonderful review!
I’m a huge fan of the songwriting recording of Sail on Sailor. One of my favorite aspects of the box set. And then enjoying all of the attention The Trader got on this set. A cappella versions of Sail on Sailor and All this is that was outstanding. I might like the a cappella version more than the original. But I had no idea this song game from the Robert Frost poem The Road Not Taken. And to hear it turned into a song, a prelude to All this is that... So many great discoveries. California Saga at Carnegie Hall?!
Some of the best BB work in their catalog! And it touches my heart even more as this is where I live. Big Sur is my favorite spot in the world.
And what about All in the Country? I would love to hear BB vocals over that!
There’s so much more. Marcella and Funky Pretty editions, Wild Honey live. Steamboat sounds amazing and the backing tracks bring new appreciation to all these songs.
Absolutely love this box set. I’m not worthy!
Great comments!
Great review!! I’ve been looking forward to this one!
Thanks for watching!
Surf's Up shipped well but didnt sell nearly as well. Most record stores had plenty of copies in the cut out bin, which is where I got mine.
My favorite unreleased studio moments are the stripped down Make It Good, which improves the song greatly for me; Brian's cover of Gimme Some Lovin', which I find mesmerizing; and the music and backing vocals of Funky Pretty, which make the song more identifiably "Brian".
Very cool stuff!
I remember seeing The Beach Boys along with The Eagles and Elton John at Wembley Stadium London in 1975, one of the best concerts ever, hearing almost 100,000 people singing California Girls etc was fantastic 🎉. Can’t believe this gig wasn’t officially recorded!
That is so awesome!
Lucky man! Like yourself, surprised there is no footage of this concert.
The Elton John Wembley 1975 set was on the deluxe " Captain Fantastic" box
God bless you.
I can’t wait to dig deeper with this box set Sail On Sailor 1972 I’m excited for the a cappella stuff and track and back vocals I love Steamboat for me that song is a gem I’m sure there’s other gems on the Holland era I can’t wait to get this for Christmas
So much to dig into!
@@Giggens I’m sure the a cappella versions sound great with headphones
Solid video as always Giggens. These box sets are a big deal. You dressed for the occasion! Nice tie. I have not gotten this yet, because of the price, but hope to. I'm very fond of Holland.
Such a fun boxset!
Never gave this full album a proper chance until this release, and I glad I did, cause it is amazing 70s poprock! I remember the track sail on sailor being on a 2007 best of record and sound a bit out of place with all the other typical 60s hits there. It really shines as a full album here, especially impressed with Holland. Funny those pics where it straight up looks like a Neil young recording session. Great sounding remaster, got the CD version.
Hey, great review man. The only thing that I might disagree with you coming from a Beatlemaniac is to me "Oh Sweet Something" sounds more like an early 70s George tune that could've shown up up on maybe "Living in the material world" or something from that era?. Anyway I'm just waiting for the $$ to come down a bit more on Amazon and I'll definitely be ordering this great set. Worth it just for the entire Carnagie Hall concert..
I bought the vinyl box set because of the cool packaging and getting the CD set for Christmas. My favorite track is "Rooftp Harry." They were still playing songs from Holland first time I saw them.
That's awesome!
What comes over in the a cappella tracks is the amount of work that's gone into the songs, some of the tracks don't need any instrument's they sound fantastic as they are. Its a shame the powers to be didn't release the "Friends/20/20" albums in this format. K BV below mention's this set hasn't made the billboard charts, well to be honest I think it's a bit over priced. don't get me wrong I love the whole idea of these release's but I think a lot of BBs fans have kept clear of it because of the price. I bought the 2cd set myself. My three children all chipped in to buy me the 6 CD set as a Christmas present for £129. I think the record company's being a bit to greedy there. Another Great video Giggens.
Def a bit pricey on this one, I agree. Thankfully we can stream it too haha!
love it
Gorgeous box set, I‘m really happy with my 6 CD version on the shelf 😄👏🏻🍀 When I take a look into the future I would appreciate very much a coming box set of the Fifteen Big Ones and The Beach Boys Love You era.
That's one I'm really looking forward to as well, it's time for an official release of all the Adult/ Child related material.
@@ChromeDestiny I completely agree 🙋🏻♂️
It will happen!
Another great review . Thanks for posting. Why the suit? Have you gone corporate? lol.
Thanks again for posting
Just felt like wearing a suit!
I get it's their best live period (baring maybe 63/64) but I think that this set is overloaded with live material. It's a little shame that excellent studio work, particularly Gimme Some Lovin/ I Need some Love and other studio tracks didn't make the vinyl release. I want to buy this to help make sure there is some Let Us Go On This Way type "Brian's Back" box set in a few years time but only half a side of outtakes is not enough for me. The Sail on Sailor demo is fantastic too as well as Brian doing Daddy Dear and the vocal + backing track mixes of Steamboat and Funky Pretty and even the instrumental for Sail on Sailor and Marcella. Wonder what form the next box takes, it's probably the last period 74-77 with a great deal of interest, especially in what Brian was doing.
I still want to know what Mike loves ghost vocals in the track of "all the is that" are
I want to get this at some point next year, especially to have the Carnegie Hall concert on vinyl. But I bought the limited edition Paul McCartney 80 x 7" Singles box set instead, which I still haven't received yet. Possibly by Friday, fingers crossed.
Oh man that's awesome, that box looks so cool!
I'd like to acknowledge the wonderful writing of Howie Mendelson on both the "Sail On Sailor" and "Feel Flows" boxed sets. He really captured the essence of why we all love the Beach Boys, and keep their music so close to us.
Part of the joy of both boxed sets was reading his discreptions of the music from both those periods, where the group was at when they made the music, and how affecting it was for them (and us). His thoughts, and particularly how he wrapped up his commentary at the end of both his contributions to both boxed sets, were particularly poigiant.
Well said Chris!
Nice tie!
Thanks!
I would love for you to do a review of : Jack Rieley & Machiel Botman - Western Justice (Excerpts From A Diary)
I can look into that!
@@Giggens Its a beautiful album, you wont regret it !!
Going out for dinner giggens? Nice look
Always hahaha
Can I borrow your albums until I get mine in the mail? Really enjoyed seeing/hearing what I hope to be seeing/hearing soon!
Hopefully yours come in soon!
Haven't seen any videos from you in a while. Hope you're doing well.
Doing great! I post every Friday! :)
@@Giggens Good to hear always love your reviews
Wonder what the next box set will be; how many tracks did they record for 90's reunion album...
Literally 2 or 3 :(
@@Giggens BB at the grammys 3 rd Feb? really hope it happens, a tribute to the BB..on TV..
Hmm.. A coat and tie...nice. You could be Dennis in this generation.
I can only dream!
Do you think they will make a Boxset for Endless Summer/Spirt of America? or 15 Big Ones/Love You?
15 Big Ones/Love You would bei great . Both Albums are Strange in their own ways. Maybe there are some Demos or Stuff Like that in The closet.
I hope a Today set comes first!
My prediction would be RSD editions of Summer and America and a '74 - '77 box set covering Big Ones, Love You, '74 sessions and Adult/ Child.
15 Big Ones and Love You will def happen!
Id love you to review Beatles anthology 1,2,3,
Will do!
Confused and can’t believe this hasn’t made the billboard charts…
It will
@@ronfowlermusic hopefully 🙏. I assumed a 12/2 releases would be reflected by this past week’s billboard charts💦
We should know more this week about the charts
@@Giggens
Top Album Sales = 60😢
Billboard 200 = [ - ] 😭
… lack of marketing effort?? This should be a top 40 !
Not another Pet Sounds...quite close, though.
