1986-1989 NBC Major League Baseball Theme

  • This theme debuted during NBC's coverage of the 1986 World Series. It wasn't the proper/main theme (a la for the "Game of the Week" along with postseason/All-Star Game coverage) until 1989 (their final year at covering baseball before CBS took over).

The greatest baseball theme ever composed for network baseball and it always sends a chill down my spine. NBC used it only for postseason games and the All Star Game in 1986-1988, while still using its earlier, inferior theme for the Game Of The Week (which was just an annoying repetitive riff on the NBC chimes). In 1989, NBC's final year of the GOTW, it used this theme the whole year. I wish they'd brought it back during their late 90s postseason broadcasts when my Yankees were playing.

Two great World Series events happened with this theme.
First: "Little roller up along first...BEHIND THE BAG! IT GETS THROUGH BUCKNER! HERE COMES KNIGHT AND THE METS WIN IT!" Bill Buckner's "goof" that sent Ray Knight to home plate and kept the New York Mets alive by winning Game 6 of the 1986 World Series against the Boston Red Sox.
Second: "High fly ball into right field! She i-i-i-i-is GONE! (long pause) In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!" Kirk Gibson's famous Walk-off Home Run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Oakland Athletics.
And they were both called by Vin Scully!

    MIKE C
I was fortunate to record this live on on a high quality beta max tape and as soon as the technology became available to transfer it onto DVD which I still enjoy to this day. Not only is Gault amazing; but also Harry Coyle, which many people don't realize was a visionary, an icon and a genius as a producer for NBC sports who saw the talent of Gault and had the wisdom to put this production together. I agree with the other posts that NBC, if they ever get baseball back should use this theme. The audience it would draw, especially among the boomers would be extraordinary. My thanks to Terry for posting this masterpiece. What a great memory it evokes.

I grew up listening to Yankee legends Phil Rizzuto, Bill White and Frank Messer, as well as Mets legends Lindsay Nelson, Bob Murphy and Ralph Kiner. Remember this well, and unfortunately this very situation. Oil Can Boyd never persevered, and Joe Garigiola was so correct.
However the music was great...thanks for sharing

The one problem w/ Vin Scully (who's going to be 85 pretty soon if I'm not mistaken) is that he hardly ever travels East of the rockies anymore (the furthest he'll go now is Arizona).

I only remember this theme from the 1989 NLCS, (Giants vs. Cubs). Still have this in my video library, with the great Vin Scully behind the mic.

I don't know about that. Walk around Boston wearing a Bill Buckner jersey, and you could be putting yourself in danger.

All I see are players in slow motion when I hear this. The best baseball intro music of all time.Right behind the Atlanta Braves music from 1978.That used to get me pumping.
