Tornado of Souls - Marty Friedman solo - in progress 85%

  • Back in the fall of 2023 I spent a couple of intense months attempting to learn the "Tornado of Souls" solo by Marty Friedman. Wasn't sure if I was good enough to actually play the solo at full speed, so had to try.
Three weeks in and some days I felt like I'm getting close, other days I felt like I was completely uncoordinated and needed to take up something less challenging like tic-tac-toe or computer solitaire. This particular day was somewhere in between.
By this point, I had been able to work most of the solo up to 90% speed, but I was still struggling to get the arpeggios in the middle of the solo, and a few of the faster parts of course, so here I'm running through the entire thing at 85% speed using JB Aubry's sweet new backing track.
This attempt was going pretty well until my hand cramped up right when I was started the last run! The end of the solo is like running a 100m all-out sprint, and I only had 50m worth of sprint in me. I start losing my timing on the descending notes right before the final run, and then my hand totally cramps up, so game over.
I spent a few more weeks on it. Did manage to the get the entire thing to 90-95% speed, but could not get the 2 arpeggios in the middle before the wide-reach pull off section past 85%. My fingers just can't do smooth sweep style movements yet.
For whatever reason, this felt like a massive failure, and frankly, completely took the wind out of my sails. Zapped all my emotion and desire from wanting to play. Went from 4-6 hours a day to practically none for the last few months. Now that I've felt sorry for myself for a few months, it's time to saddle up and get back on the horse. Gonna get back on this solo, get the full thing to 85-90% and that's going to be a massive win. Who knows, perhaps over the next 3-5 years I'll be able to get to 95% or beyond. Gotta stay focused on the journey, and not the destination.
Let me know if you can relate!

Loads of people can play it at speed, but their phrasing sucks. You're phrasing on this is pretty damn good. Keep going you will get there.

Thanks! I believe this was through the Katana mk2 Artist. Might have been a JB Aubry Megadeth patch in the files section for the settings. Worked well!

I’d pay good money to see a Megadeth show with this cat on lead. Just bring the leather couch out to the front of the stage, Rock On!
