Renault Scenic 2017 (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Renault Scenic is 20 years old. In 2017 Renault introduced fourth generation of the Scenic - the car, which created the European compact MPV segment. The idea is simple. Take a compact car, like a Focus, Golf or Megane, pump it up a notch, make bigger boot, add more family options, and we have a compact minivan. It’s a bit more expensive, than a regular hatchback, but still relatively affordable, comfortable, and safe. Renault is know for its crash test safety record. Predictably new Renault Scenic also scored 5 stars in Euro NCAP tests. Just like the Espace, which debuted over a year ago, also the Scenic looks more like a crossover, than an MPV. However this time Renault does not call it a crossover, but simply a compact van. 20-inch rims are hard to miss. This size is standard across the range, albeit in lowest trim you get steel wheels, instead of alloys. Alloy wheel design is different for different trim levels. This is the range topping Bose edition.

    Base price: 20,000 euro
    As tested: ~35,000 euro (1.6 dCi 130 hp Bose Edition + options)

    Today I was sitting in new Scenic Edition one equipment. It is a great car in and out, and if you consider that it is a Renault, interior quality looks good enough. I especially like the interior ambiance lightening. Interior space is ok, bat the space in the back is lower then the C4 Picasso or Touran, or even the older generation of Scenic. Two things I don"t like about this car. This tablet table in the back of the seats are mistake because their position is too low and reduce knee space in the backseats for 4 to 5 cm. The second bad thing about this car is front visibility, front parking sensors are must have. Overall this is a great family car, I like it a lot, probably my next car in dci 110 version.

      I wish I could, but I have to take time/cost into account.
      These roads are relatively close to where I live and film static shots. They are also relatively empty, which means I can film safely, and do not have to wait an hour to get a decent shot. This is still half an hour drive, when there is no traffic. I'm constantly looking for an alternative location, but found nothing suitable so far.

    How it drives in sport mode, more peppy or same? I think it has it.. I drive 2016 Cross 4grip with 1.6 diesel and it feels sluggish in auto mode but in sport it peppy enough for all kinds of overtaking.. Try it. Its nicer to drive than 2013 model and more confi..

    You should rather compare the boot volume of the small Scénic with the Golf Sportsvan and the Grand Scénic with the Touran. The seats are 33/66 and not 40/60. Ford C-Max got 40/20/40. So the middle seat in the Scénic is more useful than the one in the C-Max. Headroom is still a lot better than in the C4 Picasso. Only few Minivans got more powerful diesel engines than the Scénic. The C4 Picasso's engines are less powerful. It's a minivan, not a sports car. The engines are absolutely sufficient. It only needs a petrol with EDC too. But in France there are already some speculations about a future Scénic GT. Well, why not, with that design a sporty version is much more credible than a sporty Touran.
    Why are the headrests even up when you're driving alone? :D
    But overall a nice review. We ordered the Grand Scénic last weekend as our new family car.
    I would even recommend getting the Grand Scénic as a 5 seater if you're not absolutely willing to get the yellow colour (which is a perfectly good reason to get the small Scénic). The leg- and headroom in the back is much better in the Grand Scénic. On the other hand the Grand Scénic doesn't cost that much more.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives Před 7 lety +2

      If you compare external dimensions Scenic is considerably bigger, than Golf SV, yet SV beats it in every department. Consider my comparison to Touran an act of mercy, because Touran is more expensive, so Scenic can hold its ground at least in that department.
      As for the headrests, if I have people getting in and out (driving older kids to school, the driving alone for the rest of the day) I'm not going to fiddle with the headrests twice a day.
      That said, Scenic is probably the best Renault out there at the moment.

    20" rims - why? Tyres will be expensive at that size. The headrests look a bit daft, and you are entirely correct about the moving centre console.

  • @BrokenFiddles
    @BrokenFiddles Před 7 lety +1

    French designers and their ideas - some ideas are brilliant but some are total fail like this center console or fuse box in glove compartment in other models. By the way did I get it right, all models get 20 inch wheels but the lower trims are steel? Those steel 20s will weight a ton.

    • @MarekDrives

      Yes fusebox is onlu on RHD ..its same on my senic 2 ..LHD has normal fusebox under electric brake while RHD has in glove compartment.

    • @albech4731
      @albech4731 Před 7 lety +2

      It's specifically a problem in all French cars apparently. Every other manufacturer can just move the fuse box along with the steering, but not the French :(

    • @lulzyboy
      @lulzyboy Před 7 lety +1

      actually, nowdays most RHD and LHD cars have the fuse box in the same location, which makes it a pain in the arse when you need to change a fuse and remove the entire glovebox.

      I'm also really liking Renault's new design language with the Megane and Talisman and such, but their interiors and attention to detail... it's as if they overpaid the exterior designers at the beginning and now they need to save every penny from everywhere else.

  • @cdmikelis

    I just hate electronic seat lowering. Why complicate seats to introduce yet another part that will fail eventually. If they only have LIFTING on a button... this is WASTE of money. Another hate goes to thoose LCD that controls everything. Using smart phones is prohibited during driving, but we are permitted to fiddle with touchscreen for climate control? No sense. While hardware dials you eventually learn to use blindly, the LCD will demand full attention to the last day of car owning, because of it's design: feedback only by image, nothing mechanically. And yet another expensive part it will fail eventually. Than that giant wheels. Even sport cars have smaller rims diameter. And thoose tiny break disc inside... another nonsense to just sell upmarket tyres. And thoose tyres will never gain big selling volume to be perfected as more common dimensions. I wil stay with Grand Scenig II for a while.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives Před 7 lety

      My wife is considerably shorter than I am, and has to make a lot of adjustments to the mirrors, steering column and seat. For us electric mirrors/seat/steering wheel adjustment with presets is a blessing. This leaves just the centre rear view mirror to adjust manually. We have one car, so sometimes we have to adjust everything a few times a day. In a car used mainly be one person or two persons of similar stature there's no need for it.
      LCD is actually relatively cheap to replace (around 500 euro last time I checked). I know we're not supposed to use smartphones, etc., but the screen is mainly for controlling other car functions. Once they are set, you rarely change them. Again, more sophisticated cars let you preset certain functions depending on the driver (assigned to key or driver profile).
      Big wheels may be an issue, but they look good :)

    • @cdmikelis
      @cdmikelis Před 7 lety

      Marek Drives: You missunderstood my complaint.
      I am not talking about seat adjustment with memory. There is usage for it (not for me and wife since we rarely adjust seat one ofter another, due ot similar bodyes). I'm talking collapsing rear seats in Renault Scenic with tile on front central LCD. It is utterly nonsense. I'm paying that for no use at all. I have 7 seater Scenic now (second generation). Yes I would like to have electric seat for adjustment, because it is more precise in movement than mechanical lever with dents. But I never ever wanted electronic seat collapsing. You need to go there either way and do it. Collapsing is easy. Putting back demands some effort. And in new Scenic the effort to put seats back up is same (hard) as in older models. In fact, the single seats in older Scenic(s) are lighter than this 40/60 bech. So Why they did not put usefull feature of self lifting seats than? Self collapsing seats from command on dashboard LCD is utter nonsense. Period. While they did NOT provide electrical boot door. Like Citroen, even as an option!! Theese feature are gimmicks to sell more cars, they're put there where it is easy to implement and will fail and earn money after 5-10 years. Or will devaluate cars so much folks wil buy new one. I have Scenic, as I said. I like it. But it is cheap to buy expensive to maintain. Period. Key card is 150 EUR + labour to replace, while regular key in other car (much more expensive it was to buy), s 50 EUR + programming.
