Being south indian breaking a coconut is something we do for fun for mother as a little boy. Not bcos she can't bcos we liked to drink the water. This is the same as we do but it takes just 3-5 strikes. For us coconut is a staple requirement in our currys and chutneys. Or just snack the flesh or milk it.

Thank you so much Chef Douglas because we live in countries where the economy is based on coconut but this was I am extremely unique way of opening a coconut with a knife .
You may not believe it but I have two of these knives and an endless supply of coconuts just out of my door but I really did not associate the breaking of the coconuts, with a knife. We just go to the nearest stone and Smash them hard just once or twice and a crack opens. Apply to mouth drink the juice wipe your face with the coconut water for moisturising against the sun shine and Bob's your mother's brother!
Of course when I am at home it is very easy for me to pick up any sort of sharp instrument and poke it into the the weakest eye of the coconut it has three. And then drain the water into a glass period period means.

Cold and snowy day, just found your channel and been binge watching.
Obviously your a master yet A couple things id like to humbly share with you-
I been taking avocados and halving them, just a touch of lemon juice, salt, pepper, an egg yolk where the seed used to be, then layer crispy bacon bits, then (i been using cheddar but convinced asiago would improve it 100 fold) cheddar. Bake that on 350. Its incredible! And possibly a good addition to your brunch menu.
Try peeling a pineapple halving it, shalter it with butter(or ghee) then packing brown sugar around it. Bake at 320. I usually serve it over vanilla bean ice cream but suspect it would make an amazing chutney to have with an herb roasted chicken.

Put it in ice water for 5 min, take it out, one hard hit in a hard surface and it will split perfectly in half. To remove the flesh, place the coconut half face down in the oven and heat it up for 5 min med heat, let it cooldown, place pering knife between flesh and shelf and it should come out the whole flesh full.

this is a good method , but just in case you dont want to risk ruining your knife, you can do the same steps with a hammer instead, but keep in mind that if you dont drain the water before hand, it will spill everywhere. Enjoy your coconut :D

as an indonesian people who lives around coconut every single day, this chef has to learn from asian people to know how to break a single coconut wihout wasting time.
and that knife is too small and to fragile for coconut sir. indonesian people used a bigger knife for breaking it. its called golok. and we have machine to take the coconut out of it shells.
wanna buy one? go to indonesia.

@@happysawfish If you look at the top of the nut you will see 3 spots that look like a face - 2 smaller eyes and a larger 'mouth'. Between the 2 'eyes' running laterally from top to bottom of the nut there is a ridge. If you strike this ridge at its widest point on a hard flat surface the nut will cleve perfectly in half with just on clean strike. There is a good video on CZcams with a guy in Hawaii who shows how to do this even from picking the whole nut from the tree. Thats the proper way to do it without mess and effort and shards of broken nut flying around. Good luck matey.
