- Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2002 | Deepest Ireland is best experienced on its Gaelic-speaking west coast, where the rugged villages have changed little over the generations. After exploring the remote Aran Islands, we visit Galway, chase a friendly dolphin, and delve into the scenic Dingle Peninsula. Ringing with music from its rustic pubs and dotted with prehistoric forts, this region is something special. If you're to fall in love with Ireland, chances are it'll be right here. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #ireland

Irish music is a real treasure. Thanks from America.
AND from Australia
yeah
I visited Galway and Dingle just 2 weeks ago and can attest all Rick says is true. Dingle is a truly enchanting place with the most wonderful pubs and food. The people are the friendliest I have ever met. If you get the chance to visit take it, you won't be disappointed.
I love Dingel and a little village called Doolin just south of Galway. The Aran Islands are a wonderful compliment to the West Coast. A nice side trip from Galway is Cong. Awesome place to travel.
Did you go to the aquarium???
This show is such hard core 90s nostalgia and I am LIVING FOR IT 💙❤️💚🧡💛💜🍀
Hello Janae
2004
Have you lived here all your life? "Not yet." Too good.
pocketgoth , 👍😂😂
I am from Cork and pure Irish. This is one of the best videos about the West i've ever seen. Well done and thank you.
I’m a Californian USA, but DNA & my heart says I’m 41% Irish. I’m also a wee bit of (registered) Choctaw. The tribe that sent money to Ireland during the Potato Famine. I loved listening to my grandparents. Their accents were beautiful.❤️🍀
I love that they are teaching the younger generation how to speak the old language and learn the old traditions.
When I loved in Ireland, back in the early 70's, Ireland was a poor country. They decided to put everything they could into the education of their children. Today, the country is thriving. Maybe we should do the same.
Nancy Benefiel Excellent observation.
i want to go there in ireland.but how?
@@rv8185 plane? Train? Depends where you live😉
I think the money they get from the EU helped
@@edmund184 They don't get money from the EU. The EU fishing fleets have made those billions in Irish sea waters since the 1980s.
When you visit Ireland you leave a little of your soul there. Ireland echo’s in the heart forever.
the part it took on mine was a bit too big
Oh for god sake please....such waffel.
Such a beautiful place I am Irish I need to vist Ireland
just like my farts
Ireland is a natural place to lived! Nice people, less people, better more rooms to enjoyed eating, dancing, learning from one another, by being friendly! Their food is small to eat, enough for you taste! People helping you!
A short tribute to one of the greatest places on earth. I've been the entire way from Mizen Head to just north of Donegal along the wild Western coast with a native Irish friend from Rathkeale, Co Limerick. It was the most memorable and beautiful journey of my life. Go if you can. You will never regret it!
I cast my father's ashes into the sea at Inch beach on the Dingle peninsula, where he buried his faithful collie.
Russ Cattell That's the sweetest, most Irish thing I've ever heard.
Russ Cattell That's the saddest and nicest thing I've ever heard. They are together again.

Hitchhiking from Dublin to Galway and back is one of the best ways to know Ireland and the Irish.

My heart aches for me Homeland. Thank you Rick Steves find job and a good man you are. Ireland a republic, proud and strong. .much like USA ...was.
We need to strengthen our hearts my fellow country men and women and return, and to regain our Republic.
Nothing beats the fresh irish air.
jimbob jim nothing like the cows smell in the morning... I visited Ireland in a work related trip just 5 days and a have a little leftover time to wander around and I was shocked by the beautiful landscapes and friendly people. Looking forward to bring the Family soon.

I Grew up in small town in the west of Ireland .
Beautiful. Breath taking views
Beautiful people and culture. Keep it that way!!
you ain't kidding 4:00
I was so lucky to be born in the beatiful Netherlands, but closed Ireland also in my heart, when i came there the first time, some years ago! Especially, the amazing west-coast! and all over Ireland the friendly, kind Irish!
The hole of Europe Irish people are very good n helpful.god bless them all.
For those wishing to fly into Ireland, I would suggest that you consider using Shannon Airport for several reasons unless you have business in Dublin, etc. The airport is rather centrally located, they have direct flights from the US, with customs infrastructure going in both directions and the Irish rental vehicle GPS system is second to none. We've travelled the major motorways, by-ways and lesser roads with ease using this system and never once opened a map or got lost. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Our way of travelling might not suit everyone, but we generally pick an area or town to visit, drive that direction, often stopping along the way for whatever grabs our attention to shop, eat, drink, take pictures, chat up the locals and then continue on. Driving is easy as long as you understand that the smaller roads are more scenic but take longer and the roundabouts can be fun as long as you follow the Irish driving rules. For my first trip, I used CZcams to learn to circumnavigate the roundabouts properly and had no issues getting around them. Another plus, is that Ireland accepts your US driver's License without the need to qualify for or purchase an International driver's license. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~In two weeks, we saw exactly one police officer and he was going into the sub-station near the Muckross House for shift change. The biggest disappointment I ever had in or with Ireland, is that they haven't learned to how to stretch my vacation time any out longer yet. We are already planning a return trip and will be going back soon. ~~ I cannot wait to return.
I love entire Ireland. It is beautiful land with good and courteous people.
My sister and I are going to Ireland next month to visit the great country from where our grandfathers came. I am so excited! We are going to stay near Sligo. However, we are renting a car to see the country. I would love to visit with the locals and chat of old times and sweet memories including the hard times as well. Hope to get to spend most of my time with locals and farmers. I may write a book! Expecting a wonderful time making new memories in Ireland and making new forever friends!
I hope you had a great time in Sligo, I am from Sligo also, my maternal grandparents went to live in the US, they returned but their siblings opted to stay. So I have relatives in the US still.
Did you write the book ?
@@jackmatthews2546 No
Thanks for this, I first ventured all of this area in the late 80s/early 90s and went back in the late 90s ... I think its time to go back again !.
If you want to see ancient remote Ireland untouched by commercialism you need to go the capital of the Connachta, where legends began, here Halloween was born, where the past is part of the present and time stands still. That place is County Roscommon.
When I was in Ireland I visited Cork, Kinsale, Killarney and Tralee. The food with sheep, potatoes and fine vegetables was good. The rosegarden in Tralee was very pretty. People are so encouraging, even then it rains all the time. Very friendly people.
Dingle is one of the most Beautiful places on the face of this earth

I live and love Ireland, the only issue is the Leprechauns have my house plagued, once they get on you land its hard to get rid of them other then that Ireland, is a great place to live ☘
As good as Rick always is, you can tell he was really "jazzed" about this trip to Ireland because this tour has that "little something extra". I enjoyed it immensely.
anyone else wish Rick Steves was their Dad? #hugefan
Ireland has become a popular destination for White South Africans to immigrate to. Been here a year myself and i can see why, its awesome to feel safe !
@dkfelix why do you differentiate small white and White. Not being sarcastic. Please respond. I'd like to visit, so I'd like to know the loc as l life.
I am proud to be part Irish & a wee bit Choctaw Native American. My tribe sent $$ to the Irish during the Potato Famine, in turn & time you sent a beautiful piece of art❤. I hesitate to call it a statue cuz it’s more than that. ❤

Big shout out to the people of the Republic and of the Six Counties. Am from Australia, had the greatest time recently. Mind-blowing how much beautiful scenery, mountains, castles etc are crammed into an island nation probably about 1 tenth the size of New South Wales (I know for a fact that driving from Sydney to Newcastle which are well within the borders of New South Wales is the equivalent of driving from Cork to Belfast which are at opposite ends of the country. Incredible! Love the people there! The pubs are fantastic! Went to Ireland for a cultural experience and because I love all things Titanic. Ended up having the mightiest craic. And I will be back. Incredible country
Ah that's great, do hurry back!
Ireland is a good and peaceful country,,

Adorable people for many reasons and also for special colours of hair and eyes...thank you so much, frendly greetings to all of you.
I enjoyed all of Ireland but the west coast is the best, from the Cliffs of Mohr to Westport. We loved it all. Especially the people

Ireland is a very beautiful country, with the windswept coastlines and the distinct tone of music, a tone of sadness though.
Why sadness
Just feel that way. The history, the struggle, the weather, the 2008 US wall street led recession hit hard, just watched the Stacey Dooley investigate -Ireland, Lost and Leaving video on CZcams.
Thats true i had to move to australia for work and i aint never going back
You could still visit your homeland.
+Tom Colville You should have stayed and fought for your rights like the rest of us
This year I was in Ireland. It's a wonderful and beautiful country, I love the landscape, music, pubs, people, towns (Killarney, Kilkenny and Galway), sea and national parks:)
What was your favourite park?
Mr. Steve’s, My wife and I visited Ireland a few years back. I just found your CZcams videos and enjoy them much more than the television. I watch them multiple times! Your are, without question, in my opinion, the best tour guide. I thank you for the considerable skill and work you’ve put into providing us with these tours. Jeff, from Texas
The Sheep Under the Snow is a beautiful Manx tune. It seems like a very good tune to listen to while reminiscing about the Irish past.
This is a touching documentary ; you must have roots close by. These are ancient lands, where so much happened. I appreciate how you put into perspective the cruel harm done to the Irish through the centuries by the Brits. Cromwell was a nasty piece of work, and his generals were no better. The modern threat (international assassins) are the cosmopolite Bankers. For God's sake, KEEP THEM AWAY FOR EVER. Their specialty is taking over (through finance, the only thing they know) local culture and and stifling it, while soon after claiming it to be theirs. An old Robber Tribe tactic they're fond of resorting to. In the meantime God protect and preserve Eire. May she and her people live and thrive INDEPENDENTLY forever.
Long live the Irish!
Shoot the bankers, and developers!
Totally agree with how you succinctly put it...Cape Town has been SO ruined in so many places due to gentrification & money-grubbing developers... don't recognise many old suburbs due to new over-built developments... Blaauwabergstrand was a quaint fishing village type community... now there are helicopter landing rooftops...mansions all over...has lost it's quaintness totally...sad...

Hi love rick Steves tv shows ,not only are they fun & entertaining but educational as well ,thanks for sharing ,
Lovely country and lovely people. Was always treated very well in there. Lived there for 2 years and im seriously considering going back in the future.
There was plenty of other food in Ireland during the famine, but it was all exported by the British.
A kind of reverse foreign aid
This is never openly discussed as it should. In a way the British wanted, bluntly, a genocide of the Irish

I love you for ever Ireland !
Hello Agathia

lough sheever , the absolutely best squash soup I ever had was at that food court in the hillside! Who would have guessed?
My favorite show 🎉
They speak so beautifully.
Ireland has certainly come a long way - a shortage of potatoes wouldn't cause even a ripple on the gourmet scene .The country is flourishing and curious tourists are coming from all over the world to see what makes it so green and beautiful . It's not just nature that's attractive but also its cities and towns filled with wonderful churches ,shops ,pubs and gardens . Even these small communities with their own traditions and customs have a charm of their own . Thanks Rick .
Maybe educate yourself about the potato famine before making flip comments like that.
@@redmachine7 what's flip? Ireland is no longer longer dependent on potatoes - from 330,000 hectares under cultivation it's down to 8000 h. Even consumption has fallen. With globalisation the Irish eat everything that's available in the world. Guess you need to register for night school cuckoo.
I was here in 2013, and I can't wait to go back!! If you haven't read her, you need to find Felicity Hayes-McCoy 's books - they all take place on the Dingle peninsula!! Lovely books by a lovely lady!!
I've visited and lived in Europe, and the British Isles. A farm in SE England is home for my daughter and her family. My visits to Ireland are always in the west of the Isle. Thaveling around country roads brought me by "The Quietman Bridge" a bridge made famous by John Wayne et al. The west of Ireland is my favorite place.
Go raibh maith agat! I've been to Ireland several times, but enjoy the craggy west coast the best, including Galway, Donegal, and Dingle. Some of the friendliest people in the world. We also had Tim take us around the Dingle Peninsula for a fascinating view into Ireland's ancient history. Can't wait to get over this pandemic so I can return to this beautiful island nation. I just came back from a eight day tour "Heart of Ireland"...I am so in love with this country. My life is so enriched by one of your tours. I had so much to process that these videos are helping me re-live my wonderful time. Our guide and bus driver were amazing and the places we viewed and stayed were so wonderful The food was the best ever. Loved my tour.
Jeff, do you mean ''Éirinn go Brách'' the Gaelic for Ireland Forever!! Erin go braugh'! is an English version
I saw this today on June 17th 2019 and this part of the Emerald Isle more got the Iona classic, "Irish Day" flowing in my head. And playing that along side these beautiful verdant hills across the ancient western coast just hit me in the heart strings. I don't know how one could be Irish and not get teary-eyed to that song. One day I will go there. It's a quest that this Alabama-born son from a family of Joneses wouldn't miss for anything.
blasket islands reminds of the great movie 'Ryan's Daughter' .I enjoyed watching this movie just as much as I watched this documentary about Ireland.

Ireland is special right because of it's nature !
Rick, not "To Hell or to Connemara". Cromwell said "Too Hell or to Connaught" Trust me on this. It's the one history lesson no school omits. He was referring to the land west of the Shannon.
you are correct
Ricks shows are low level info. He probably gets about 70 percent right.
What do you expect from a man with a firstname as a surname.

Great Ireland; the culture, the places and famous for your celtic music, wonderful!

Have a wonderful trip Joaquin.
Thanks glad to see you enjoying having the family with you.
Let's go to Ireland.
Wow Ireland the country side is so beatutiful
Very beautiful. I'm planning to do my exchange semester in Ireland next summer. I'm looking forward to experiencing the beauty and everything of Ireland ❤❤❤
Sadly, Fungi the friendly dolphin has been missing for a few weeks. The whole of Ireland is gutted. Dingle is absolutely stunning on a clear, rain free day. I spent a few summers in the Irish collages around dingle. Great experience. My Irish language skills are still woeful though ( my fault, not the Irish teachers).
Will never understand, why someone would ruin other people's happy mood with the kind of statement you made about the dolphin. Really? Do we really need to know that. I did NOT. Thanks for NOTHING.
I don't think 'craic' just means conversation. It's more about having 'a good time' and can apply to anything that is enjoyable/fun/exciting.
Thats exactly what it means👍
It applies to wit, humour, pranks, fun, mischief, and general enjoyment, of conversation, music, dancing, poetry, but always in company.
What’s the Craic.....is a common expression....meaning,broadly speaking.....What’s happening....
I've watched about half of Rick's videos now, and first time seen Rick's family.
Ireland is stunning...
I love the Aran Islands I visit Inis Oirr every year
