  • Finally finished reading A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon -- one of the thickest books I've read ever and prequel to the Priory of the Orange Tree.
So, is it worth the hype and the time spent? Watch the video to find out.

I keep hearing good things about this and Priory of the Orange Tree, only reason I have not picked them up yet is because as I have got older i worry about books like that keeping my attention. But I think you have convinced me, and will pick them up in the new year. Great video

Well it is definitely not for everyone! I read about people giving up in the first few chapters. So if you have the time and commitment to really immerse yourself in the lore you will probably enjoy it as much as I did 🙂

‘Wolf and Loth the only male narrators of each novel’.
I get that Niclays isn’t particularly liked but whoa, just up and erase his existence.
I loved these two books, and as a male reader strongly believe we need more women-lead high fantasy novels. It’s especially jarring if one likes to pick up older fantasy books and just the sheer degree of casual sexism or misogyny is so offputting.

Jesus! I forgot Niclays! Prolly bc most of the fan art feature Loth and Wolf thank you!
Also, I recorded this video a good while after reading the Priory and I think this says a lot about the Niclays’s character
And most of his story felt like someone else’s?? If you know what I mean like imo he could have felt better as a side character driving up the story.

@@jillywonker yeah Niclays is unfortunately both forgettable and also dislikeable. I appreciated how they tried having a more unusual main character (old, physically disabled, at ends with the reader’s assumed morality) but he failed to be a ‘likeable unlikeable’ character.
‘Most of his story felt like someone else’s’. I feel a big part of his story was to give more depth to the East and how the rules and regulations work, which doesn’t help him stand out either.
