Link doesn’t work
I pre ordered last week
That’s it! I’m committed and ready to learn!
Would like to. But no pay pall option :-(
hello there - another interesting video, *BUT* : it's *NOT* a good idea, to insist *only* on creditcard payment, ppl like me boycott these suckers and prefer *other* suckers, f.e. *paypal* 🤑 , so I *would like* to get the course but I just *can't* - haha and my future music room is still also my bike-repair&garage right now 😂 - gtx from the Lake of Constance
I’ve never been here this early but guys I finally got my first Stratocaster 🔥🥺 I’ve literally had that thing on layaway since last December
Have fun !! Best guitar there is for me
Congrats!
Nice!!!
Layaway lol
@@gunkanjima3408 Why lol? I play professionally and it's how I've been paying for my amplifiers and guitars for the last several years.
We need a "What is the Mesa Boogie Sound" video. Pass it on
That's easy to describe... a flubby tone with no sustain that doesn't cut thru any mix with more than 2 instruments. At least that's what I noticed with my Dual Recto. So i ditched it.
I have a little 5/25 watt combo with a vintage 30, it sounds amazing. Im sure Rhett will get to it : )
@@electricurinal sorry to hear it didn’t work for you, my best friend has an insanely nice sound from his Mk5 that cuts through any mix with ease
@@daro9582 I see that all the time. Several friends of mine had them over the years and they sounded killer... so I had to have one too. And that's what I got out of it... no cut, no sustain, easy to drown out. And I was like WTF, that's odd. But it was what it was so I got something else... don't even remember what I got instead, seems like it was an Ampeg Diamond Blue vintage style el-34 50watt head. It roared more like a Marshall and cut through anything, as I recall.
And - it's really cool watching you build the studio. Your work is always appreciated
You are so absolutely spot on right with the whole being in touch with modern pop music.I noticed this even more since my daughter is growing older. There is so much to learn from modern music and staying in your own bubble is never a great idea. Thanks a lot for al your video's. I really like them and learned a lot from them. Keep up the good work man.
Congrats! Can’t wait to see the finished studio!
Solid floor plan for the studio. Just make sure the walls you intend to knock out aren't load bearing
Just got your fretboard course man! Can't wait to learn new stuff. Keep making amazing music and CZcams contents; cheers ❤️
I kicked in when I saw the title - the most overrated pedal. It reminds me of a common and recurring thought I have. I am an old geezer rock'n'roller, started playing as a teenager in the '60's. In those days most 'normal' people bought guitars and amps based on how much money they had and what their local shop had in the window (often a choice of three). And the sounds were pretty good - we can scoop The Beatles, the Stones, Clapton, Hendrix...on and on into this mix. Even studio guys (low-level studio guys...) only had maybe four or five guitars, if that, plus maybe a fuzz and a wah. Now everyone (including me) has a dozen guitars, two dozen pedals, and seemingly a great deal of dissatisfaction with their sound. So the question I keep asking myself is, are we doing ourselves and our music a disservice by not sticking to one or two guitars, one amp, and a couple of pedals?
Great post sir. Instrument manufacturers and many CZcamsrs make much money on keeping us dissatisfied with what we have, looking for the next guitar/amp/pedal/tuner/pick ups etc which will give us 'that tone' - and most buy into it.
I'm an old guy, after decades of buying and trading etc, I've settled on 2 pedals, 1 valve amp and two guitars. That's it, and I couldn't be happier.
It doesn't pay CZcamsrs or musical instrument manufacturers to say - 'don't buy any more stuff, just sit your ass on the chair and practice more' - which is the real answer to what most players are actually looking for.
I play cheap guitars and no pedals. Never play my Les Paul and marshall stack, hardly ever use my pedals. Fully agreed.
Speak for yourself. I have a cheap Dean I bought in 2005 and a $30 pocket amp. Not all of us are loaded.
@@ZiddersRooFurry i inherited my expensive gear m8.
id of rather not obtained it since that was the cost.
the stack is just too loud, and im not a pedal player, and the cheaper guitars i have seem to push my playing harder.
The nice guitars seem to let me be lazy.
i usually play a third hand bullet series squier and an mg15r.
total cost about $200.
the enjoyment, priceless.
how much was your dean m8?
@@ZiddersRooFurry I was loaded - 'til I bought a dozen guitars, two dozen pedals.....
Very excited for the course Rhett🙌🙌
Can't wait to see the studio build series!
For a very long time, my only "overdrive" was the "Level" knob on my Deluxe Memory Man. It still works like a champ. Try it, guys!
The Memory Man is ridiculously versatile
The boost on my Tech 21 Boost DLA delay pedal is an amazing MOSFET boost and can suffice as a low gain OD. It's a bit like a Memory Man, has a similar tone.
@@maxpeck4154 it's a different sound when you hit the front end of an amp with more signal, vs just turning it up
Thanks Rhett, informative content pal 👍. Nice one.
Rhett "I have friends who have lots of Klons" Shull.
You big-timing us?!
That JHS guy ;-) I think he has like 20 or 30. LOL...............
@@forestgreenman He has a terrible slide tone as well ;)
@@mattgilbert7347 the joke is on him them because I also have bad slide tone and only paid for a Tumnus Deluxe.
@Brian Savage. Rhett mentioned affordable options, including the J. Rockett Archer, my personal choice for Klon sound at a non-insane price.
Just bought the course just on the merit of the quality of your CZcams channel. Looking forward to filling the right side of my brain with some music!
Replayed the Janis/Big Brother part three times, sounded great.
I’m here for all the polite, well-reasoned comments.
classic.
Nice to see one of my favorite drives rediscovered. I’ve been playing a Drive-O-Matic since the 90’s.
I really enjoyed the subject matter for this video. Specifically, your answer to the question about what musicians should pay more attention to generally speaking. I literally had a conversation eerily similar after watching a live performance. You could tell that the members of the band were all impressive players in their own right but failed at being a cohesive unit. i.e. band. Love your content man! Keep up the good work.
hey thanks for answering my question! i totally agree about the Klon!
Brooooo
Good stuff, Rhett!
Thanks!
I have a weird fear of Rhett accidentally breaking down a wall that is important to the stability
I think at least one of the ones we saw is a load-bearing one. They should probably get some support beams in. I'm guessing they have thought of that. I hope they have..
Yes. At least one of those 2 walls is load bearing I imagine.
It's the tone bearing walls you have to be careful not to knock down
@@ChandelierLeBlair beat me to it!
@@ChandelierLeBlair yes yes
Fantastic again Rhett good luck bro.....
Pre-ordered the new course! Always felt like my fretboard knowledge was limited because I was self-taught.
Love the comments about branching out and listening to new music. As a P&W guitarist, I find it really easy to hate on modern worship music because of it's overall simplicity. However I recently started listening more critically and I'm really impressed with some of the cool nuggets of playing you find in new recordings.
Thank you for your ever timely wisdom.
The into to Piece of My Heart sounded pretty spot on! Was not expecting that and put a grin on my face
Your "on the road" vid's are excellent and very "watchable". As a viewer, i would just say, keep doing them the way you have been. That style is very much "your own", and imo really are unique in the CZcams space.
I used to play "Piece of my Heart" every night in a cover band years ago. So much fun to play; my favorite "twisting sixths" ideas on a recording.
The Klon schematic is available online, its distortion circuit uses back-to-back 1n34 germanium diodes, still available surplus for under a dollar each.
Right, its all of $5 worth of components and a couple of hours of labour
Lmk ooo
Can you send me the link , I am building my own pedals
Not quite $5 for the whole circuit… pots. Jacks. And switches are rather pricy. Still. Not more than… $30?
But guys tech that anyone can make with almost brass tacks circuit knowledge and a soldering iron isnt authentic.... the money everyone spends sez so... I know if I paid some out right silly price for something I'd defend that purchase publicly all the way to the bread line lmao
9:42 I couldn’t agree more. You should always be paying close attention to the rest of your ensemble. When you spend a year or two doing this with someone, you basically develop musical telekinesis with the other musicians.
awesome video as usual rhett
I saw you in Des Moines. I can't believe I just stumbled across the show. I recognized the Novo and thought it sounded like you, and at that moment Noah Guthrie introduced you. Too cool. Very cool to see you live.
Take Another Piece of my Heart. Nice! I've been using a Boss Blues Driver thru a fender deluxe for 20 years now. It's all I need...well plus reverb, delay, chorus, vibrato, Digitech Whammy and some other stuff I can't think of right now :)
For a console, you might want to consider a hybrid one. Something like the SSL Origin, or the Neve Genesys Black are a good mix of old skool recording console circuitry, along with the means to seamlessly integrate in to a digital environment.
I have a klon clone a friend built for me, and it’s awesome. I also recently acquired an MXR Sugar Drive, and it’s nearly dead on. One is used at the front of my chain for some hard clipping drive for leads, the other is at the end of my drives as a clean boost.
Really digged the DriveOMatic demo, playing! :)
I have only seen the DriveOMatic one other time and it was at the Sam Ash there in Atlanta. Sat in the used case for at least a year, maybe it is still there, not sure, but its been a while. Very cool that you are considering bringing that circuit back. I have a klone and make good use of it, but wouldn't pay the ask on a real one. Close enough for 1/10th the cost is just fine.
The Klon is not overrated as much as it is waay overpriced. So yeah, unless I was filthy rich, I'll never own one. The Mad Professor Bluebird is a really nice OD with delay even and about $1,850 less than a Klon!
For sure not worth the price. I like the Tumnus as an alternative-no need to break the bank.
I use a Tumnus stacked with a Westwood and a Clover preamp.
@@rizzexponential Tumnus Deluxe is great - the Klon circuit with really nice added features. The active Bass and Mids controls open up a lot more possibilities.
@@chipsterb4946 I often run a Tumnus Deluxe with 0 gain and lots of mids + bass in front of my PRS MT15 head to butter up the cleans and occasionally to push the lead channel in a different way. A 3 band EQ on a pedal rocks me all day.
Big Brother & the Holding Co! Nice.
I pre-ordered the course, dude!
It also helps to put the capo next to the fret, and not in the middle!
i loved last weeks vlog
Thanks for the tip on the G7th capo, Rhett. Put an order in for one, looks like a great unit. When's the course gonna hit? I ordered about 2 weeks ago...?
How is your shoulder doing? Your videos get better every time!
Rhett I am sure you know this but when looking for a console don’t over look a Trident or MCI/Sony 3000 series, or even an early Soundcraft. As long as it modular all you really need is the frame, the monitoring section and 8 channels to begin with especially since your going in to DAW (I assume). Are you planing on eventually getting a 2” 24 track? A SSL or Neve is every studios dream but like a Les Paul Burst there are only so many out there.
I second the old Trident. The studio where I work had a major upgrade when they brought in a mid-70's Trident console. The EQ section was magical!!!
Speaking of capos, I have a adjustable DDarrieo spring type, best of both worlds, adjustable spring let's you choose the tension
The J. Rockett Archer is glorious! Been on my board for years!
I love the backstage journal videos👍
Nice little Janis Joplin thing man. Always surprising this old road dog with your appreciation of the classics.
You should totally make a MTB video, that bike looked sweet!
Your home studio plan sounds awesome Rhett. Where did you get your T-shirt? I need one of those 🤘
I had one of the originals... sold it when I needed a house payment. It's a staple in my Helix patches now...
Loving this series - Thx Rhett!
Going off you answer of "what to pay attention to" - - - Can you do a video about starting to play with others and not being overly nervous at rehearsals? I find that I am so obsessed with what I am playing and trying not to mess up that I am missing out on the overall experience or overthinking everything.
For me the first thing to do is to practice playing your band's songs as often as possible, everyday if you can, so that it becomes more natural to play them. Because on the moment you don't want to have to think about what you have to play but just play it. Once you can do this it will be much easier to pay attention to what the others are doing.
Also maybe focus on a couple of songs at first and don't try to learn 20 of them at the same time. Finally, don't practice too much over the original song but prefer some kind of backing track, or just a metronome, otherwise you might unconsciously rely on all the little things that go on that give you a sense of where you're at in the song, things you won't have with your band. But don't worry, it just takes time and practice to get there
@@benjaminnavarro865 Thanks Ben, I appreciate the advice! I do practice the Set List a lot but I like your idea of leaning more on a Metronome or Backing Track - I haven't tried that but will give it a shot. Thx again!
@@chrisr530 you're welcome. Also, you can try to sing while you're playing to force you to pay less attention to your guitar
I wonder if you can do a video about your opening tracks. Everytime I'm blown away by your tunes!
I completely agree with your capo observations, and the G7th is my go to for my electrics because it’s adaptable to any guitar neck and for the reasons you stated. But I recently found a video from Kyser that recommends bending the lower arm to change the tension. I’ve not tried this, but for those with a Kyser this might be a way to adapt a capo you have to a use on one guitar (I can’t imagine bending it to fit multiple guitars unless they all have the same neck). For those of us who can’t afford to just throw stuff in the closet when someone makes a suggestion this kind of hack is valuable.
Dude, I really like the edit of your tours. And the sound of the show is real cool! Do you record it straight from a mixer?
Wampler Tumnus is what I have. It's a mini pedal, sounds awesome (always on for me), and I've seen comparisons on CZcams where it sounds the most similar to a Klon of the major klones out there (but with better low end).
LPD has his own Klon clone now. It's called Embers. It's a Klon with an added Bass knob for additional EQ options.
AND it's really cool sounding! The Bass eq is a great addition!
My favorite overdrive pedal just so happens to be the only pedal I own, the PedalDoctorFX Four-speed Overdrive. I don’t know if the guy who made them is still making them, but if you find one, they’re pretty cool!
"Paying attention the the other people playing"
I have never gone beyond butchering up some songs with another guitarist a few times,
that being said.
I did not find one that could hear anything but themselves playing. It felt like I was just following along.
I think I could find those people now, but my skill level would be years behind what that caliber of player expects/needs/deserves.
Pop music, I can't call it music, arranged computer sounds is not music to me.
As for what I popular, no interested, it is mostly as I described above.
I 100% agree with the out side of your normal box, this channel is outside of my box.
This channel has lead my to trying new stuff on my guitar: not dimeing the gain even though it never gets old.
Trick I learned about the capo, keep it as close to the previous fret as you can. It'll bend the strings less. Obviously you still have to get it close enough to the "right" fret to do it's job. So if you're using the capo on 3, put it as close to fret #2 as you can, as long as it still sounds good.
I absolutely love you, brother. Thank you for great content. I would love to meet you one day just to shake your hand and say hello. I wish I was good enough to jam with you! An autograph would make my day! I enjoy every video you make. There is no plan B. God bless you, bud!
Hi Rhett! Thank you very much for selecting my question. I leave you an extension here: When you play live you have an specific guitar for songs with capo or you just put in on, retune and start the song?
Used SSL, Trident, Neotek, Neve, API ect ect. To me it's not a real studio without a real analog board. Happy to hear you're thinking console. Vintage King can hook you up.
Rhett, get at Alex St. Cin at Vintage King to help outfit your studio. Alex also has a lot of experience in acoustics and studio building. He built and engineers out of Lighthouse Sounds in Alton, IL.
Archer is a great Klone, have an original that i bought off of bill when he was still building for like 300 bucks or so, wish I would have bought hundreds : )
I'd like to share some capo info I learned from Tommy Emmanuel.
When he puts a capo on his guitar, it can pull some strings sharp.
Tommy said his trick is to push downward on all strings around the pickups.
He demonstrated it in concert. I only use G7th capo's too, they are the best I've found so far
I was literally about to make a gaming console joke, but ya'll beat me to it.
I’m glad you specified the JHS modded Soul Food because I bought a OG Soul Food and sold it in FB 10 mins after owning it. Those suck.
My favorite pedal for my AC30 might be my T Rex Mudhoney. Man that thing really rocks with all my Teles, Strats, and my 335. Anybody else a T Rex fan? I also have the T Rex Quint Machine and that thing is incredible as well. I've actually got the Boss Tone Bender and a Sola Sound MKII Hybrid and they are both incredible as well but I find it hard to use them alongside other pedals but I still wouldn't get rid of them.
Looking forward to your opinion of the ZelZah if you end up getting one to mess with.
I use a G7 capo on my electrics and a schubb on acoustic. I always clamp the strings to the fret rather than in between so it can't pull the strings out of tune as much.
I love the Joyo Tauren, for roughly around 50$ off of Amazon it gets me VERY close to a Centaur. I’d give it a try if I were you, and ti might let you open up to moro Joyo pedals, especially the ones in the R series from Joyo.
Shubb Capos are also excellent and have adjustable tension.
Hey Rhett, can you tell me what kind of adapter to use for that Stamps overdrive. How many milliamps does it draw? And as a general question how important is it to match up your wall-wort with your pedal
Forgotten OD that is great and will work for anyone is Xotic BB preamp in my opinion.
Capo tip: install your capo, then give each string a quick little tug. It will release the stored tension behind the capo and you may not have to retune... unless the pressure of the capo is unusually high... and your frets are tall giving more distance to stretch the string behind it. Even with a Kyser capo, a little string tug is usually all it takes to be in tune after attaching a capo. Installing a capo exactly on top of the fret and not behind it will also reduce the amount of string stretching, altho some players my find this reduces the space for their hand a bit too much. To do this correctly, be sure the leading edge of the rubber part of the capo does not extend beyond the contact point the string makes with the fret, or the rubber can mute your string a bit. But it will be enuff to keep the capo from pushing the string to the wood behind the fret making your string go sharp.
the horse breaker is a great pedal. with klon at one side and blues breaker at the other side. I just wish there was a switch which switched the pedals from blues breaker to klon and then back.
Good guitar into a good amp. That’s usually all you need. As a guy who has 40+ some pedals I started buying in the 70s, (read: old guy), I no longer use them much. A Strymon reverb, and a Wampler compressor now and again. Eventually it just comes down to chops.
Yep. Same here. The amp's drive channel, a boost and a Strymon delay.
You really missed out on your new classes name. F-Rhett-Board Fundamentals
^^^ this is it
Great vid. I always preferred Big Brother and the Holding Company over other iterations of Janis' bands.
Have you made any videos with that tonebender fuzz you bought?
Had to smile when you said that musicians should be paying more attention to modern music. Right after demoing an overdrive pedal with a 50 year old intro 😎. Although I may not have recognised the track if you had played something recent.
really love the Janis Joplin's bit, just awesome
Ha ha, you talked about plan "B" through-out video of what to get in place of the over priced Klon! I know what your saying though. Sorry for being smart ass. Thank you for video!!
I want to see a video on that LPD Embers overdrive. Is it a Klon clone sytle?
you should look at Trident consoles! They're on the more affordable end of analog consoles and still sound great!
Just looked at the Klon Centaur on Reverb (3/8/2022). They are priced with "horsie" for $6k to $9k.
HYPED
Centura is a work of Art, and sounds identical to my KTR.
Agreed! It’s funny…I even feel the Centura is slightly warmer sounding, which is great. Also, a little fuller than the KTR. The latter got kicked-off my pedalboard because of that reason actually.
Hey Rhett, what mic do you use to capture your speech and how does it sound so good and retain so much low end while you yourself aren't right up next to the diaphragm?
Do a guitar collection video
For the last 10 years, I’ve been pushing the much underrated Zvex Distortron. I play a tweed baseman clone, and those two pair so well together. In fact, I’ve heard it through a number of fender amps, and it doesn’t disappoint.
What a lovely combo
The Mastotron as a fuzz is also underrated. I don't hear much about it and it's a less crazy, very tweakable alternative to the Fuzz Factory. Sounds awesome in any configuration.
@@tritonmosquito9348 agreed. I have one of those too. I used to own a fuzz factory, but the unpredictability was hard to use in a live setting. Mastotron gets in that territory, but also plays nicely with his pedal siblings.
@@stevenbatke4167 Exactly ! The bass switch makes it play good with a lot of amps, and it can go from good sounding distortion to Big Muff territories to glitching mess. Love mine !
Rhett, I see Luna running in the background. How are you liking it?
I think you should keep the bar in the studio, or at least incorporate a version into the build. It'd be a nice touch 😁
You need Chip Gaines coming in for demo day, Rhett.
Your electricity bills will be in the thousands if you got an old SSL console. Go with one of the newer API desks. Flying faders optional since you can do automation in the box, and use the board for summing.
i have bias fx...the full package and its a sweet program for many reasons...the klon centaur became a go to...look that pedal up and see who uses it and you will get an idea of just how diverse that thing is...from brian adams to metalica...nice crunch without too much ugg in the distortion like a tube screamer...you can hear your chords ring through without the mud
I know you described the topology of that Drive-O-Matic, but damn if it doesn't sound like there's some silicon transistor flavor happening in there.
P.s. If "be on the look out for that, possibly in the future" isn't the biggest hint ever about a very awesome JHS recreation, I'm the Queen of England. Ask Josh to call it the Matt-O-Mattic for me.
