  • The word 'Kaliru' refers to elephants in Tamil language. This film is mainly based on the Human-Elephant conflict. We have shown how humans are affected by elephants and how elephants are affected by humans. This is a very serious and sensitive subject. We worship elephants as God every day through 'Ganesh Ji' and on the same day in many parts of the country they are abused and chased as a troublemaker. Farmers are in the frontline of the conflict, especially the farmlands close to the forest boundaries. Poor farmers suffer a lot and even have lost their lives due to elephants. Forest Department introduce various methods to mitigate the conflict but still the effort put by us is very little. Elephants need lots of space to roam around the jungle like they once did. But with the current situation where the forests are shrinking in no time, elephants will absolutely have no future in India. With very little time left, we shall all stand up for a good cause that benefits mankind and the gentle giants.

As a Tamilian living in the US who hails from a farming community, this video leaves me deeply saddened and disturbed. It is barbaric how the elephants are being treated. It is not their fault that their lands are being shrunk due to agriculture. The Indian government needs to make a serious and massive investment in creating restricted reserve lands for the elephants and move them to such lands. Otherwise, I fear a future in India where elephants are extinct.

So heartwrenching to watch. These gentle giants of India deserve better care. A must watch short feature. Big respect to the creators.

India can be so lawless. There are organizations in other countries that prosecute cruelty to animals. How are they not protected from such brutality. This was elephant habitat before the population blew up. Time they start building up instead of out. Policy makers are lacking. The conflict with Elephants and humans is not isolated to India . It happens in South Africa too and I understand the destruction they cause in their path. I’m in Canada and we have wildlife conflict with black bears breaking into homes then conservation is called in when they get to comfortable around humans and we relocate them. We don’t burn them alive. If a nuisance animal persistently comes back to old habits only then for public safety do we humanely euthanize them. Elephant harassment is down right cruel behaviour. In Africa they have night watchers to deter the elephants from breaking into farms and human habitats. I’m sure there are better solutions than this 😢 heart wrenching to witness.

I am totally confused regarding whom to blame since everyone is concerned about their own lives irrespective of the species(humans and elephants). Too much urbanization is the root cause of all these unfortunate incidents. One person's greed who is looking for land, resulting into the conflict of humans & elephants.
Not just Elephants, any kind of animal's luxury lies in forests. Humans' greed for lands leads to deforestation. Hence, elephants do come to cities & agricultural lands & unknowingly destroy crops & other kind of public properties.

This is a fantastic film. Not only has it been brilliantly made, it also highlights the man-animal conflict. That its the largest land mammal has no meaning as humans are being cruel to the extent that they have no concern for an animal that is considered as God. The film has wonderfully shown the puppet show which is probably a great way of showcasing conservation in rural areas. Very, very well made and truly deserves an award.

Great effort to highlight the difficulties that elephants face due to the human activities. However, it is tough to address the greed of the humans including govt officials who throw all norms to the air while permitting resorts, farms, and 'eco tourism'. As it is hoped in the end of the movie, our previous generation has created this problem and we must put an end to it, not pass on to our next generation.
For this very local problem, why did you get a foreigner to narrate? At least you should have trained her on how to pronounce 'Mahabalipuram'.

These creatures will have to be moved and their populations will have to decrease plain and simple. We humans are gods supreme and divine creations , we have DOMINION over these beasts not equality. India is going to continue to develop, and its people are not going away. At best the elephants are going to have to be moved since it's going to become completely unacceptable to people to have these big animals killing people and destroying property. It's called "Progress" and every single developed nation on earth has undergone this process. Sorry, but when it comes to choosing between elephants and people, people always come out on top.
Move elephants to some protected area and fence them in. Allow only a population that can be sustained by the natural environment. You can't have progress and population growth AND the same number of wild elephants on the same fixed land area.
