How to Patch a Hole in a hollow core Door - Fix & Repair

- In this video, I show two ways to patch a hole in a hollow-core door.
Expanding Foam Stuff→ amzn.to/2dMYsV5
Caulking Gun (pricey one)→ amzn.to/2eg94xB
Caulk→ amzn.to/2egSmhx
-The reason I use adhesive caulk and not drywall mud is because acrylic caulk is flexible and will not crack later on.
-If you are spraying in the foam put something below the door so that if it floods out it will not drip on the carpet as it dries. Or tape one side of the opening of a plastic shopping bag [so it hangs in an open position] right below the door hole so that if it drips out, it drips into the bag.
-If you are patching a large hole, take the door off and lay it flat. It will help the foam not run down the door. Also, you will want to use an autobody filler like Bondo to coat very large holes, acrylic latex may be too hard to work with.

My anger problems brought me here
Iggy, you planning on punching a hole in a door?
My girlfriend made me angry.. I kicked a hole in the door... Grrr.. Now I have something to fix.. Yay!!
Sir Galah same here, she took to long to get ready.
Same
Bro same case
Adam I am moving my family where you live. Everyone needs a friend like you, hope you have a pool and a boat
I have never seen a better presentation and when it was over I really had no further questions on how to complete this project. Thank You for this opertunity to make a comment. Ted Krawiec, Florida
I agree with you! I have no questions.. He's passionate about What he does...
who else here cuz they punched a door out of anger

Same
3 doors for me :(

That wood grain effect tip is pretty neat!
Don't use caulk, it shrinks and cracks, best using a wood filler or poly filler as it will need a light sand afterwards, my opinion from experience
Exactly.. bondo for me
Used lightweight filler it's well better
@@scaryperson27… crumple news paper, stuff in hole, mix up bondo, sand, in 15 minutes ready for paint!
Bondo!
Will spackle do?
Great fix 👍 I work at home depot and love telling people about repairs like this. Thanks!
Do one coat or layer of the caulk, let it dry. Apply a second coat, then use a dry paint brush to smooth it out (vertically / up and down). This will mimic the faux wood grain on the door you’re patching and help blend your hole patch into the rest of the door (as good as it can be).
Thanks so much for posting this! Found a hole in one of our doors while under a time crunch to prep our house for sale. The expanding foam/caulk trick will be a quick and easy fix.
As a landlord I started using solid core doors. ;)
I know it's been a few years since the release of this video, but great video! I've done this method loads of times and by far the best way, the only thing I do different is use a specific exterior caulking as it won't shrink. As for sealing the end of any caulking tube is to use a bit of TUCK tape, works like a charm everytime. Thanks
You're awesome, the simplicity is remarkable
I don't know why I was lucky enough for this to show up in my recommended videos but this helps a lot with a closet door I have made of this same material.
Thank you! I was hoping 4 ideas & these are great. By the way, i must say how impressed I am of other commenters’ wisdom. To those uber helpful know-it-alls: why are you watching this?
great video, I did similar with the sticks, then used sheetrock 20, just before dry time, used a putty knife to mimick grains in wood, total hole repair time was 38 mins, including paint.... great tip on the expanding foam for harder repairs, I did enjoy watching this.... thanks.... oh ya, I did not have to sand the sheetrock 20, just knocked it down with putty knife before it set up....
cheers
Good video with thorough explanation. Thank you for this!
That is the best way of patching a hollow door I have seen yet. Thank you!
use a wire nut for the tip of the chalk tube
I like how you can't even see where the damage was by the time you've finished. Good job.
Fantastic video. I have two knob handle holes that can now be filled with his method. Guy at Lowe's told me I'd have to replace door. Not anymore! Much appreciated this video.
Great alternative to fishing a patch inside the hole for a hollow core door! I'm going to try this as I have exact same hole on a hollow core door from the same type of hinge door stopper. Thanks for showing your idea
Sir you're a wizard, thank you for uploading this!
What were the materials again please help my mom is coming home in 12 hours help
Lool
same problem bro
You only need one: cyanide
ApexXknives same I was doing flips and I accidentally kicked my moms closet door and made a hole she is going to be mad

Why did this get nearly 1k of downvotes? Usually people make one single mistake and that makes everyone downvote a video, or perhaps the solution is garbage. But I couldn't find a major mistake, and the result looks great. Any ideas on why people downvoted so much?
Wow I was stressing my door and this video solved that. Thanks man!!
I was with you up until you said “caulk.” I find that wood filler or bondo, as others have said, is a much better product for this application. Good idea about creating a faux grain with a card-just use wood filler instead. Easier to work and sand afterward. Thanks for the video!
Great, well done video. Quick, to the point and clear spoken. Thank you
Thank you!! was trying to find a way to match the wood grain texture
This is the best one I swear
I like to use a wet paint brush on the wet caulk to duplicate the wood grain, but your credit card method seemed to work pretty good too.
Thank you for sharing this helpful clip!! 4 of my 6 hollow core doors were kicked in by a toddler & FINALLY I am getting them repaired, now that I am are sure she is out of the tantrum phase!
Packing tape on the end of caulk tubes works better than a nail. Wrap it once. Fold over the top and tape tape that down. Great video!
you made this look easy. thanks for the detailed breakdown. great video
Hundreds on years from now archeologists will discover that popsicle stick and be dumbfounded as to how it got there!
No they won't. They will notice the repair done and conclude that it was a repair method that was abandoned
I laughed so hard XD
LOL
then we cheech
Nah, people from the future will find a popsicle tree that grew inside that door. 🤣
Just fixed my door using your method. I had a much larger hole. Worked like a charm thanks for the awesome DIY video.
Can you tell its repaired/painted in that one area though?
NOW WE CAN ALL PUNCH A DOOR AND FIX IT!
For a real challenge, try to punch a hole all the way through the door.
@@NightBazaar is this a challenge? Lmao
@@NightBazaar I was mad at myself for punching a hole in the door. And then I was disappointed that I did not punch all the way through.
Thanks for this video. Exactly what I needed to know.
This was very helpful. Thank you!
Just punched my door a little to hard thanx for the post
7yearOldAnarchist same out of anger
RIP little Popsicle stick you will be missed
Bob Cobby I attended the funeral
It was closed casket.
🤣🤣🤣🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Adam - Great helpful video. I was on my way today to buy a new door, but you save me both time and Money. AC Sellers
Lmao. This is the exact hole I needed to fix. A tenant put these on their closet doors. 🤦♀️ I loved the popsicle stick trick!!!
Great trick! Would have liked to see it dry, but I'll definitely be using that trick.
A Couple of Tips: You can use half the amount of foam and let it expand; more than enough. Also, just learned to always let the can point down; can get so much more out of the can that way. Also, the screw is great for pulling out with pliers to the remove the hard stuff from the caulk tube.
Bondo works better than caulk. It hardens up really nice but is still soft enough to copy the wood grain by scratching it in with a nail or utility knife.
I used the patch netting that you use to fill a hole in the wall and then super light spackle stuff and then drew the grain after my last coat. Worked great. But yours looks much easier. Plus now I have lots of doors to practice your way as my son thought i was a manly thing to do in the home by leaving his mark on the doors.
fantastic! simple and cheap and looks great!
I had the same problem from door stop and this seems like a great way to easily repair it.
Thank you for your video, wasn't sure how to do it but now I know.
Wow! Thanks, I will follow your great instructions. Door looks great!
Just what I need! Fantastic! Thank you!
This will be so good for my problem in bath doors. Thank you.
Wow, that is so creative thinking outside the box with those Popsicle sticks.
I've used spackling compound with great success. You can use the plastic netting on larger holes to prevent cracking.
Exactly what i needed, very well done. Thank you.
Thank you! Excellent detailed video. I appreciate it.
Perfect! Thanks Adam
Adam!! Excellent post! Good information!!
excelente idea, I have knob holes almost @ every door in the house.
Will painting just the one spot with the same latex paint used on the door be obvious? Would I have to paint the whole side of the door to hide the hole?
thank you for this exact video.
Great video! The "mini drywall knife" (razor blade)
Pretty cool! Thanks for sharing and keep them coming!
You just saved me from buying 3 new doors plus paying someone to hang them. Thanks for sharing this method. I never thought of this.
godcuredme so u don't even know how to hang a doors Jezus Christ Americans are lazy
Kufcio jeez u sure use rude language he is not lazy idiot he just doesn't want to waste money to buy 3 expensive doors and someone to hang them read carefully dumbo
lol i am sure he could figure it out by looking at another door in his house its not that complicated. Maybe he just never was in a position to hang a door?
godcuredme tha
Lposh thalposh
@@CrazyLocoInsane1 maybe he makes a lot of money and doesn't hang doors..
You forgot the part where you destroy the door with an axe.
Thanks adam that was very helpful!
Spray foam!!! Why the he'll didn't I think of that!
You are awesome! Thank you!
You are just brilliant! The detail and your approaches are masterful. Kudo's
Great IDEA my boy just put the same hole leading to our basement. Thank You
Good one. Thanks for the tip.
very good tutorials..
Adam, Thanks for posting this. The gap filler when cured looks fairly flexible. For people who wish to reattach the door stop (e.g. in rented apartments), could the flexibility cause the paint to crack? Would the lollypop stick method provide better rigidity? For those who don't have a caulking gun, you can buy a toothpaste style tube of caulk for $2.50CAD.Thanks again!
Nice solution! We overcut a circular opening for a knob into a hollow door but did not want a new door or bigger knob.
Nice video. I'm going to attempt this on a larger hole - about twice the size (or larger). Instead of using autobody filler like Bondo do you think joint compound (i.e. the stuff you use to fill/fix drywall holes) would work?
Loved this tutorial
You are a flippin genius. Thanks so much!!!!!!
amazing video, thanks a lot!
Thanks for sharing.
great video!! Well done.
I will use that method in future.
Thank You so much. I have this exact door all thru out the house. And one of my doors has this exact hole.
thanks for the video! I really like the fake wood mark (learned something new)
Thankyou for this video!
Thanks. Have the exact problem on a door, will be able to fix now.
Great video thanks
Thanks for help Adam good job 👍
Gonna try it! Thanks!
This is pure magic
Great job and tutorial 👍
I just saved myself some money on a new door. Love the technique for fake wood grains. Thanks.
