How to Patch a Hole in a hollow core Door - Fix & Repair

  • In this video, I show two ways to patch a hole in a hollow-core door.
    Expanding Foam Stuff→ amzn.to/2dMYsV5
    Caulking Gun (pricey one)→ amzn.to/2eg94xB
    Caulk→ amzn.to/2egSmhx
    -The reason I use adhesive caulk and not drywall mud is because acrylic caulk is flexible and will not crack later on.
    -If you are spraying in the foam put something below the door so that if it floods out it will not drip on the carpet as it dries. Or tape one side of the opening of a plastic shopping bag [so it hangs in an open position] right below the door hole so that if it drips out, it drips into the bag.
    -If you are patching a large hole, take the door off and lay it flat. It will help the foam not run down the door. Also, you will want to use an autobody filler like Bondo to coat very large holes, acrylic latex may be too hard to work with.

    Do one coat or layer of the caulk, let it dry. Apply a second coat, then use a dry paint brush to smooth it out (vertically / up and down). This will mimic the faux wood grain on the door you’re patching and help blend your hole patch into the rest of the door (as good as it can be).

    I know it's been a few years since the release of this video, but great video! I've done this method loads of times and by far the best way, the only thing I do different is use a specific exterior caulking as it won't shrink. As for sealing the end of any caulking tube is to use a bit of TUCK tape, works like a charm everytime. Thanks

    Great trick! Would have liked to see it dry, but I'll definitely be using that trick.
    A Couple of Tips: You can use half the amount of foam and let it expand; more than enough. Also, just learned to always let the can point down; can get so much more out of the can that way. Also, the screw is great for pulling out with pliers to the remove the hard stuff from the caulk tube.

  • @mrbee4882
    @mrbee4882 Před 7 lety +11

    Bondo works better than caulk. It hardens up really nice but is still soft enough to copy the wood grain by scratching it in with a nail or utility knife.

    I used the patch netting that you use to fill a hole in the wall and then super light spackle stuff and then drew the grain after my last coat. Worked great. But yours looks much easier. Plus now I have lots of doors to practice your way as my son thought i was a manly thing to do in the home by leaving his mark on the doors.

For people who wish to reattach the door stop (e.g. in rented apartments), could the flexibility cause the paint to crack?
