  • Today we dive into legendary Swedish pop group ABBA. "Super Trouper" was the third single and title track to their 1980 studio album of the same name. The single was released in November 1980 and became ABBA's ninth (and final) UK number 1.

A long time ago (around 1974-1990) I did prog rock with great commitment (and I am still a big Yes fan). So it was hard for me to admit that for me, ABBA is really cool. Today it's easier for me ,-) ABBA's songs are so perfectly arranged with appealing lyrics that hardly anyone can escape their magic.

By this time ABBA had conquered the World. Things were winding down for them. But the Music kept getting better. The lyrics and video celebrated their "success that never ends". All the while telling a personal story. ABBA were masters at Music and Lyrics. And all with a catchy melody that has lasted 50 years. Once in a lifetime group of talent. Thanks for your reactions.

Great commentary. So true! i got moved from your last 3 sentences on them, cause they got such an unfair, predjudiced criticism and humilation and same happened to us fans that supported them. But time proved there's still no one to touch them in their field,so thank you Joe for stating this.

My absolute favorite ABBA record. Insanely catchy with top-notch lyrics and tight production values. It was the last song recorded for the album and a bit of a rush job but you get the sense that Benny and Björn didn't overthink it and just let their keen pop instincts take over. Just a beautiful song.

One of my earliest musical memories is hearing the Super Trouper album when I was about 6 or 7. I liked it even then. Abba have an amazing ability to create drama, melancholy, happiness, and comfort in one song. I will never get tired of listening to them. My favourite though is the more obscure The Day Before You Came. Synth heaven that one, with some great lyrics. A brilliant pop band 🙂

Oh wow! Treading on sacred ground with ABBA. My all time favorites. The absolute masters of pop music. The harmonies, melodies, hooks, gorgeous soundscapes and impeccable production. I appreciated your comments about the trepidation with exposing Ty to this particular ABBA track. With that said, I recall listening to the Super Trouper album and being confounded by this track because I initially found it really simple and kind of silly TBH. However, the more I heard it the more I started hearing just how much was actually going on in the mix and also the really emotional and sad message masked in the upbeat, bright and bubbly sound of the song. I then began to realize just how brilliant these 4 Swedes actually were and continue to be. It has become one of my absolute favorite ABBA songs and has stood the test of time. Side note, it became one of ABBA’s biggest UK hits their final #1 in that country.

Well, thank you for this video with your reaction and comments
    "Super trouper" (1980)
was the nine and last single #1 to ABBA in UK ; and it was the #1 (with the album too) the day than John Lennon was murder
It's the opening track in Their seventh album "Super Trouper" , that was #1 too in UK and several countries of all continents
This album included the most heartbroken song "The winner takes it all" , it shows how versatily ABBA is
"Super Trouper" is the same year,
    and the following single,
than "The winner takes it all"
and both was #1 in UK specialy
Two songs different in style and lyrics and lead singer, and worldwide hit too
in "Súper Trouper" you can hear clear Frida amazing sweet as a lead singer, and Agnetha fantastic in second voice
(as could see specialy in the second verse of the official video)
and a beautiful melody with power and catchy chorus (including a capela parts)
"Super Trouper" is in my Top10 if all ABBA songs, and in my Top5 of all Frida as lead voice
These is your third reaction to ABBA songs:
    S.O.S (1975)
    album ABBA lead voice Agnetha
    Knowing me knowing you (1976)
    album "Arrival", lead voice Frida
    Super Trouper (1980)
    album "SuperTrouper", lead voice Frida
I think that the next reaction to ABBA should be with the blonde Agnetha again in lead voice
    My suggestion is to
"Thank you for the music" (1977)
in their fifth album: "The Album"
    or "Chiquitita" (1979)
in their sixth album "Voulez Vous"
    or "One of us" (1981)
in their eight album "The Visitors"
I put three different songs, all of different styles and genres of music, from different albums too, to appreciate the evolution and versatility of ABBA
See you in the next video
My best regards to You from
    Buenos Aires, Argentina

This came out at the time when disco was just about on it's last legs, if not very much moribund. There were still a few more, 'hits', to come, but by this time, the new wave of more synthesizer based pop was establishing itself, along with the, 'new romantics.' This ABBA song was kind of a crossover from the more traditional style of pop to the newer synth-based stuff that was yet to come. Unsurprisingly, it did very well in the charts, particularly in the run-up to Christmas of 1980. I remember it well.

What a beautiful part in 4:04,i melt each time i reach this point.Btw there are many videos in the net by music fans that "uncover" and dig out ABBA's backing vocal construction of many of their songs either by using the Dolby atmos analysis or other programmes. You can't imagine how much hard work/"masterful" arrangements and unbelievable little details are hidden underneath. And all of them recorded at a time that technology and recording facilities in the music studios weren't available the way they are today!Imagine B+B Were writting their music mainly by using a piano and acoustic guitar.Which was far more difficult and a puzzle only for the gifted skillfull ones.Their genius studio engineer Michael Tretow takes also lot of credit for his astonishing contribution. It's undiscribable. But how can you excactly discribe a wonder?Sometimes i get chills listening to all this stuff seperately before getting combined to built up the final result.

Most Abba songs grow on one over a few listens, and I think Super Trouper could be one of those. The song criticises fame and the singer can't wait for the show to be over. A bit of darkness in a happy song. You might enjoy the dark, electronic sound of The Visitors from the album of the same name. Cheers chaps!

Try listening to the title track of their final album, The Visitors which is very different and about the paranoia of a dissident behind the iron curtain waiting to be arrested and The Day Before You Came.
These at the time would have lost ABBA about 80-90% of their fans who would have bought Super Trouper.
But they would have been heading down a very different but still very creative new road.
Unfortunately they went their separate ways and that was it until forty years later.

Corny?Well tell that to LIAM GALLAHER from OASIS.He is an Abba fan and doesn;t care to admit that "Super Trouper" along with 'Waterloo' are two of Abba's greatest songs!Abba were heading for the end when this came out but they didn't know it at the time, though it was proven they were still big deal in the pop scene.A+B were divorced and B+A got divorced some months later on.After this they released their last No1 album 'The Visitors"(dark and quite peculiar) and then went off for 4 decades of hiatus until 2021.'Super Trouper' single and 7th studio album of the same name was another massive success(except for the USA market where the top 10 hit there was "The Winner takes it all").That was a glorious production..In this band they were two striking frontwomen as vocal leaders. The melody to this is more mature and honeyfied! And seemed that we all loved the soop-pa troup-pa element. Some of today's pop stars would have "killed" to own such a melody.Neverthless I'm greatfully thankful Dad for your "daring" choice!I was also excpecting something "harder" or "groovier" for Ty,ha!ha!But i felt that deep inside you reaaally enjoyed this song and its splendid arrangements and you wished so much for Ty to like it too!Hugs to both of you from Europe.

Great reaction, I like your exchange of opinions, so important this time. Super Trouper was a gift for the ABBA fans, specially for the "old Mamma Mia-SOS mourning" fans with this conservative touch. I had understood it and granted them the sucess. ABBA were disappointed about the reaction of the preceding album "Voulez-Vous" and the sales.
If you want to be will surprised, take for time to time a demanding track like The Name Of The Game, Eagle or The Visitors (sadly no video, but from the topic so up-to-date: or take Soldiers, sounds so harmless, but profounded text).
Otherwise if you want blow away - so full rock energy and patience as you never expected of this Pop group - take the double track Does Your Mother Know + Hole In Your Soul from Live Wembley 1979; also from the same concert Summer Night City + Gimme, Gimme - both in a long version and a high live quality. All the best for you.

Think Abba were always considered corny even back in the 70's - although kitch is probably a better word than corny or even cheesey!! (Nothing wrong with kitch...or cheese). There's no doubt they were good at what they did. Even though half the planet liked them, most wouldn't admit it until much later....like me lol. They did a song called Eagle which is really good and worth checking, much more masterful, if the dad hasn't heard of it definitely give it a shot. I'd recommend the long version though because there's some good electric guitar solo's and there's also a youtube video for it.
