Lithuanian Special Operations Forces (LITHSOF): AITVARAS

  • The main tasks of Lithuanian special forces are special reconnaissance, direct action and military assistance. They prepare for high-risk and high-value-added operations aimed at achieving strategic and operational results in the political, military, information and economic domains.
    These forces can be used in the territory of Lithuania in case of terrorist attacks, when law enforcement agencies do not have necessary capabilities to respond to threats.

    “Aitvaras” is helluva group of badass guys. They are really respected among other elite SOFs. There are interviews and internet forum’s posts from retired US soldiers who gave mad respect for Lithuanian SOF guys. There even are stories about taliban members started to respect and became afraid of them. BTW, our guys were the ones whom were allowed wearing beards inside the military bases in Afghanistan, it shows how really respected they are.

    Actually, in a few days there will be tryouts for civilians, and in April for current military members.
    My cousin was a paramedic + m17 helicopter gunner of Air Expeditionary Advisor Squadron, in Kandahar. One of the hardest positions, because not only you have to certify every year as a gunner, but also as a paramedic. Constant PT tests, etc. I believe in most armies, when you are a heli gunner, you have to be a paramedic. There is a few videos on youtube about it, one of the toughests and hardest positions in army-air force. You have to be a beast, my cousin is 6ft4 and like 240 lbs.

    Lithuanian here, we, Lithuanians, heard about AITVARAS mostly of their missions in Afganistan. We also have a special police unit (like SWAT), called "ARAS" (link to video: czcams.com/video/y763V7Js5_w/video.html). During my early age I was thinking to become one of them, then later on I thought to become a soldier, but changed my mind. I think while becoming a member of both of these special units - you have to sacrifice your life, your family, you have to obey and follow the orders without thinking, that's the rule for all special forces, I believe, and in general for military. For some it's a dream, for some - maybe not :) .

  • @AlexP-mi2bc
    @AlexP-mi2bc Před 5 měsíci +8

    Speaking of the present day risks in the region, I think these are the guys who will be operating behind the enemy lines in case the Suwalki gap conflict comes to pass. Actually how large is the unit?
    One scenario that I read about recently is two axes of attack:
    * 70 thousand strong Belarussian army + Russian forces move along Druskininkai-Alytus-Marijampole-Nesterov direction
    * 70 thousand strong Russian army corps moves along Goldap-Suwalki-Augustow-Grodno direction.
    I guess Aitvaras will be responsible for making sure the former is slowed down as much as possible until the Lithuanian army can make a stand.

    • @herptek
      @herptek Před 5 měsíci +4

      Surely the closing of the Suwalki gap would not be the only thing triggering the article 5 is braved for by Russia. In that case surely the cities would be immediately the next targets, Vilnius from Belarus and the others from Kaliningrad if the Russians have an active troop build up there. There are a whole lot areas that might need defending from behind the lines. Estonia and Latvia could face another such invasion simultaneously if the Russians intended to do the dirty deed quickly.
      Ultimately there is no reason for the Russians to pull something like this off unless they wanted to try to make a quick land grab on the Baltics while eroding the credibility of NATO, if they believe NATO is not willing to counter-attack.
      The good news is that they don't have infinite forces to do something like this completely out of the blue just one day, retaining surprise. Their active military is limited in strength and mobilizing Belarussian army to take part in something like this would likely be difficult to keep a secret or to find a plausible pretext for, especially if it happens while Russian military is concentrating on the region.

    I think people should stop underestimating the militaries of Lithuania, as well as Estonia, Latvia and Poland. These countries are over 20 years in NATO and their militaries have already been lifted to NATO standards. If a country's size really mattered, then elephant would be the king of the jungle instead of lion.

    • @traumvonhaiti
      @traumvonhaiti Před 4 měsíci

      I don't think anyone is underestimating the Baltics and the Polish professional militaries. They are what they are: well trained and equipped. And yet they lack an adequate large scale combat experience.
      They lack reserves, medical service, logistics, military industrial complex at large scale. And no one knows how quickly these countries will be able to restore these given the "efficiency" of the European bureaucracy.
      War brings everyone down to earth. Even extreme NATO optimists.

    • @wersus167
      @wersus167 Před 5 měsíci +5

      You are mixing PVK ( Povandeninių veiksmų komanda - Underwater Action Team) which is under LT Navy where in fact they do mostly or even just mine hunting ( might be wrong here but to my knowledge they are only responsible for all kind of mine hunting and they see little to none actual action ) their main task is and I quote - "Povandeninių veiksmų komandos pagrindinė užduotis - darbas su sprogmenimis po vandeniu" ( The main task of the underwater operations team is to work with explosives underwater). And on the other hand we have Combat Divers under SOF who are responsible mainly for action in water - you can compare them to Navy Seals for better understanding of what they do but unlike Navy Seals who falls under Navy branch, Green Berets under army and AFSOC under Air Force, our SOF equivalents falls under it's own independent branch - SOP ( Specialiųjų operacijų pajegos (Special Operation Forces (SOF))

    • @wersus167
      @wersus167 Před 5 měsíci

      Our navy specializes more on support role than direct combat. Ex. mine hunting, providing supplies to combat vessels. Also since we are in NATO, our officers and crew go on international training with our NATO allies. In case of war, our Navy officers and crew members could be integrated into allied naval forces, serving on ships from other NATO member countries.@@eledoggye9599
