Hope videos like these teaches the car dealerships a lesson about over charging us and that we can do maintenance and preventative maintenance ourselves… one word: obsolete!

@practical enthusiast Sorry I didn't catch this earlier while you were doing the VANOS and had the valve cover off, but strongly recommend you replace, with a silicone line, that vacuum line from the rear of the intake manifold, running along the rear then right side of the engine up to the secondary air source. That will be one big gotcha that could erode all the terrific refresh work you've done. More painful with the valve cover reinstalled, but a must.

I believe it is advised to put sealant (three bond or similar) on the three half moons.
It seems a little bit tricky to remove the vanos rings, I would be afraid to damage something with the cutter. But not sure there is another way...
For the CCV if you remove the oil filter it should be really easy.
    Thanks for the video!

Those are good points. I wish there was a better way to remove the vanos seals but a careful hand with the blade works ok. It may have been hard to see but RTV was used in the half moons.

Do you need to reset ADAPTATION after the rebuild? I done mine following your video and many other...but once fitted back the engine idle is all over the place...and then engine stalls. Checked both camshaft Sensors and they working ok. The timing asnt been touched as I only removed the vano assembly and nothing else. Suggestions?
    Thank you for your time

I squirted a little oil in the feed hole before mounting it up to the engine, but honestly doesn't need it since they're thrust/roller bearings. Oil will populate them within a few seconds of start up.

@@PracticalEnthusiast That's why I think I will stick to older Mercs. Yes they're not as sexy, don't handle as well and generally don't come with manual trannys like BMWs, but the M119 and M112/M113 engines are generally bulletproof which makes a big difference if you're not super mechanically inclined.
