Married 14 years. divorced 20 years, our 26 y.o. daughter with Down Syndrome lives full-time with me (He has not bothered to keep in contact with either of our children for 20 years). I heard that my daughter and or I can receive additional SS from his SS account. I just turned 62, I have never remarried.
Very empowering, thank you. If the ex-wife (homemaker, married 16 years) have a pension from her ex-husband's work after divorce, will her Social Security amount be reduced?
If the higher earner is six years younger than the ex spouse kin, the lower earner, who is older, take half of the Social Security of the younger spouse. If they have not reached a particular Social Security age qualifying for instance if they are still under 62. Do you have to wait for them to reach each qualifying age for you to take half of the amount of that qualifying age? Thank you.
So there isn't any clause if you were not exactly 10 years. I have a friend that was married for 9 years and almost 11 months. They did not have any children. She's now 60 years old and disabled. She's not able to draw his SS?
I have a question about widow benefits because my mother legally married an American citizen. She has a social security number but before she could finish the residency process, she had to return to Mexico in an emergency because her father died and she could not return. to the United States and a few years ago her American husband died, it is possible that she can claim benefits
If my ex got remarried in her late 30’s then was married for over 10 years to a deadbeat who didn’t work while living on my kids child support and settlement, can she still be getting half my ss benefits if she divorced the deadbeat before 60 even though they’re still living together and only divorced to collect ss from both their ex’s?
I am 64 and divorced from a 23 year marriage with my husband. He was collecting social security and passed away 2 years ago. I don't have enough credits to qualify for ss benefits because I worked part time. Can I still collect ss benefits from my ex spouse?
I understand that there is pending legislation that will remove the spousal benefit in an effort to shore up the pending short fall of SSA if passed. Are you aware of this? and is it necessary to claim the benefit prior to any legislation that eliminates the spousal benefit? Thank you
I was married for 11years.Is a divorce decree of spousal support that is currently coming out of my paycheck, does that still come out of my Social Security check? I turn 62 tomorrow and am considering retiring early and working part time, but I can't do it if my spousal support is still valid. She has been drawing SSA since age 63, she is currently 72. Her benefit is way less than mine. If I draw ss benefits, and she claims my benefit, I'm wondering if that will satisfy the divorce decree of spousal support, or does SSA nullify the spousal support order?
Im 61 will be 62 next year, my spouse was a high income earner. Is it possible for me to collect his social security, still work, AND delay collecting mine until later?

SSA says if you been married less then 10 years no many how many times you've been married they get nothing.

Thank you for the informative presentation. However the sound effects are loud and jarring when listening on the car's sound system.
You’re welcome! Also, not sure what you mean by sound effects, we don’t use them.
just apply
Thank you
Welcome!
What if you’ve been collecting disability ? I heard that if you are disabled , you can claim divorce spousal benefits? If so, is it retroactive?

The law is a stickler ! I doubt so on his benefit.

I’ve been advised to not give individual advice on this channel. Pls reach out to SS and you’ll likely find the answer is “yes” … thx !

Thanks for your question. That ability went away in 2015, but remains possible for widows.
Thanks for Example #3 - have a friend who is divorced ad she is wanting to know this because she does work .. This helps me explain it to her...
Glad it helped !
