  • What are estrogen and progesterone? They are the female sex hormones, and they’re produced mainly by the ovaries - the female gonads.

    I am a nurse educator. Parts of this are great, but parts of this are inaccurate. During menstruation, there is a spike of LH (called the LH surge) but there is not a surge of FSH. FSH starts off high at the beginning of the cycle, but decreases leading up to ovulation. The purpose of FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone) is to get the follicles to mature. As time goes on leading up to ovulation, the follicles are maturing, and when ovulation comes, they are ready to go and FSH is no longer needed.

      Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention! I will be sure to pass this along to my colleagues on the Content Team so they can check the details with our Chief Medical Officer. 😊

      FSH can perform more than its primary function, it seems counter-intuitive to me as well but "The Normal Menstrual Cycle and the Control of Ovulation" (Reed & Carr 2018) states "Progesterone is also responsible for stimulating the midcycle rise in FSH. Elevated FSH levels at this time are thought to free the oocyte from follicular attachments, stimulate plasminogen activator, and increase granulosa cell LH receptors" plus if you look up any graph of LH & FSH hormones you will see a slight spike (not as profound as LH obviously)

    it appears what’s missing during and after menopause is progesterone?
    smaller amounts and a diff type of estrogen are produced .. but no production of progesterone was shown. ? why do i not hear progesterone replacement ? .

    • @danielcarlsen9228
      @danielcarlsen9228 Před 11 dny

      If you take estrogen you definitely should also take progesterone, at least sequentially. Estrogen causes the endometrium to build up and if it goes on there is a high risk of uterine cancer. Progesterone is needed to shed the endometrium in a menstruation.
