    Do you struggle to fit child seats in your dual cab ute? Or are you considering a ute for your family car? Then you want to read this first and find out why a legal loophole means installing child seats in utes is not as simple and safe as it should be.
    Over the last few years, while installing child seats into nearly all makes and models of dual cab ute, I have struggled, sworn and cried and once smiled (thank you Mitsubishi Triton designers) during the process.
    Installing child seats in utes seemed to be unnecessarily difficult and I just could not understand why it was so different from installing them in cars.
    To get some answers, I spoke with Australian Child Restraint Resource Initiative (ACRI) Director Robert Newman, ANCAP Chief Executive Officer James Goodwin and Kidsafe Queensland CEO Susan Teerds.
    All these experts confirmed that Australian Design Rule 34 (ADR34) regulating the design and construction of child restraint top tether anchorages in cars does not apply to utes because they are classified as commercial light goods vehicles.

    Thank you for bringing this to public attention. My husband and I are in the market for a UTE for our family and had no idea about this. No reviews we have watched discuss this issue. Thank you and keep up the good work!

      Thank you Keri, I'm glad it can help you make a more informed Ute purchasing decision :)

    Thank you. I hope you will make a video on CZcams to get the message out there. I don’t understand why we seem so relaxed on child seats in Australia.

      There weren't standardized car seat latch system laws in the USA till 2001 and not total compliance until ten years after that. They would leave the holes to install a system plugged with pieces of plastic instead of just putting the latch system in.

    I was after a Ute in the xtra cab purely for the extra tray length, to my surprise the only manufacturer that has factory fitted anchor point was the Ford Ranger and the bt-50, but there are people out there that that can fit an anchor point and get it engineered, another thing I noticed was alot of cars now instead of having an anchor point to body of the car it's actually now part of the back of the seat

      Makes me wonder how safe the back of the seat anchorage is though in a serious accident, if the entire seat becomes compromised everything that's on it will get ejected with no external anchorage point for a tether to hold on to.

      @@benvella1728 I suppose it will come down to how well the seat is mounted and what strength bolts are used, it is worrying though

    My 2022 Ssangyong Musso has 3 anchorages mounted on the wall behind the back seats. Easy to access.

    I can see why most would have difficulty as we have a Triton...In saying that i personally didn't find it too difficult to install or remove the car seat once you do it a couple of times.

    I think the most important question here is, are the loops used in a dual cab ute safe (i.e. are baby seats tested in utes)? Having installed an infasecure baby seat and Britax baby seat in the family ute and sedan respectively. Using loops wasn't very difficult.

      Navara has been recalled twice to sort out the fabric top tether anchorages on certain models where they were not strong enough. Who knows how long-lasting they’d be especially if you are connecting a metal hook to the fabric as you have to in the Nissan… the biggest concern is ease of fitting and especially adjustment with this method

    • @bnguyen4419
      @bnguyen4419 Před 3 lety

      @@BabyDriveReviews That's quite interesting. Fortunately at least they are still required to test these tethers under crash conditions which led to the recall. It would be great if there was further follow up investigations to test the long term durability of these fabric tethers. Until things change drivers of ute's will just have to monitor for tearing/ damage.

    Can I install a tethered anchored baby seat 0-4 years forward facing into a 2008 PJ Ford Ranger SPACE CAB but in the back ? Is there somewhere behind the space cab back seat to attach an anchor point?

    • @BabyDriveReviews
      @BabyDriveReviews  Před rokem

      Might be possible but might not be a big enough surface for the child seat to rest on and definitely not much legroom up front once installed! ask the ACRI acri.com.au/ for advice about it

    What to do it should be illegal to put carseats in a ute. This government brakes the law.
