    The final ever Batman movie to be adapted into a console game, and that's a fucking good thing!
    The game featured is Batman Begins on the Playstation 2.
    And like all great (and horrible) comic-book movies, stick around after the credits for a special surprise. Well, when I say special, I mean horrible horrible waste of time.
    Enjoy!

    • @Tennings
      @Tennings  Před 9 lety +124

      Wol1427 I get what you're saying but It's honestly not the same. Imagine if in the Arkham games you wanted to get onto the roof of a building, but instead of been able to use the grapple-hook, the game instead forced you to go through the front door and then get the elevator to the top. Every time. That's what this feels like.
      There's even a clip I put in at 6:32 where Batman has to get up to a first floor balcony, but instead of using the grapple hook, you have to press a button on the wall that raises a projector screen. Batman then has to grab onto the projector screen, wait to be lifted up, and double-jump onto the balcony.
      EA pretty much neutered Batman in this game just so that the game could be longer. It's especially frustrating to play. Hope you can kind of understand where I'm coming from! :)

    • @Wol1427
      @Wol1427 Před 9 lety +13

      ***** lol I understand you, I'm just making pointless remarks for fun, but couldn't you say that with almost every game with hero's or superheroes they always limit your accessablity or ability for padding or just for gimic, why should Batman use an elevator when he could just glide, that's true, but what if I told you that another game based off the same character and developed by people whom cared about the character does a similar thing, Batman Arkham Knight makes players trudge through with the batmobile for the sake of a gimic and to pad out the game to be longer, when we could of used the batwing to get most things done quickly and effectively. What I'm saying is that it's a game developers basic instinct and mentality to pad out a game with unnecessary shit, whether if it's long or not, it's inevitable, every game has something tedious about it. Lol

    • @hfric
      @hfric Před 9 lety +15

      Wol1427 Those "elevators" are hidden loading thing ... like in Mass Effect to stream maps into the memory
      They made Batman like this because it was a pain, to develop large maps that would fit in the limited memory and then stream it ... see this like Spiderman 1 on PS1 gimick and their gas , thats why you play in the city on rooftops only (or Silent Hill fog that was memory limitation)... loading small map sections looked elegant and made sense from the technical stand point ... but then again in 2001 we had RenderWare engine that was used for any Console game back then to have big streaming worlds and sandboxes (this game was from 2005)... now all console games use Unreal 2/3/4 for the same reason
      So now the the big question would be, what engine did they used ? Burnout 3 engine ... but that was Renderware
      hmm , interesting what custom engine they made... also, back then the main platform for this game was Xbox , and it shows ... compared to the PS2 version that had awful problems ... signs of a awful port (from xbox)

    13:39 ROFL! That's Denny O'Neil, son. He knows more about Arkham Asylum and its history than you ever will since he's the one that created the hospital and gave it its Lovecraftian name. O'Neil didn't write the game, he did write the novelization and they just had him there for the interviews. He would have been very aware of Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth since he was the main Batman editor at the time. The graphic novel isn't canonical, so I'm sure he meant that they didn't tell a proper story in the main series.

X-men and Spiderman made comic films something to invest in again and really he used the Marvel Cinematic Universe as influenced by Batman begins? They're the exact opposite of what the Nolan Films are. They're light, bright and popcorn fun. It's what comic films needed. But dear god, his attacking Denny O'Neal who made Batman a creature of the night again in the 70s, and penned so many amazing batman stories made me roll my eyes. Do a little research before you make a video.

    This game came out when i was 12, and it was the first batman game that made me feel like i was REALLY doing batman stuff. The stealth appealed to the hardcore metal gear fan i am, as well as the fear aspect. I hadn't even seen the film, but in several of the comics i owned back then.... batman was just as much a detective preying on the fearful criminals as he was a GREAT fighter.
    But what REALLY stood out to me was the batmobile levels.
    They were made by the same guys, as well as used the same game engine as burnout. That was a selling point to me.
    The batmobile AND burnout style gameplay?
    Hell yeah.
    But... today im spoiled by the arkham games... which are true batman experiences. They even seem to be a continuation of the animated series i grew up with.
    Big plus.
    Kevin Conroy ALWAYS comes to mind when i imagine batman's voice.
    Mark Hammil will ALWAYS be the joker. He's the best joker to ever be put in media.

    14:00 I know this is an old video but still. That was Denny O'Neil you were talking about. Denny is one of the biggest factors in why Batman isn't a goof like he was in the 60s. Saying that he doesn't know what he was talking about is dumb and disrespectful. Denny was a legend, and revolutionized the character in ways few writers have since. Nonetheless great video!

    I really liked this game, used to play it on ps2, and i think that some elements of this game really inspired Arkham games, like stealth mechanic for example, where you need to take out armed enemies first, etc. Or that you can take out enemies from below, like from pipes, etc. Also interragations. So yeah, i think it's a very underrated game, imo.

    Bravo, Tennings; absolutely brilliant. You have honed your craft and it shows, this is a joy to watch.
    The dichotomy of playing a bad game based on stellar material is something I have done many times; and i'm talking about the situations exactly like this one where there was no excuse to do anything but an amazing game full of creative opportunities. Even Goldeneye 007 just mirrored the movie. The only one ever I can think of is Riddick: Butcher Bay, but that is hardly fair since the principal actor and force behind it (along with STARBREEZE of all devs) made it a gem.
    The cuts to the featurette on making the game are all too fitting. The FPS...unreal(unless that is PCSX or your cpu aren't playing nice). The Tennings, traumatized to Wayne levels. All for the greater good of...erm, something.

    13:39 this is literally the guy who created Arkham Asylum, and was also the editor on Batman comics when Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth was published in 1989 (though I don’t think he was an editor on that title itself, as it was an original graphic novel intended for mature readers to coincide with the Batman movie and not a part of DC‘s main continuity). Notably for Batman Begins, he also wrote the story that introduced Ra’s al Ghul and Talia, as well as a story called The Man Who Falls, which Christopher Nolan himself cites as the main “jumping off point” for the direction Batman Begins took. Every Batman comic book fan who is worth their salt is aware of him, and many would cite him as the single greatest Batman writer of all time. He’s not a video game guy, which is why he appears out of touch in that world and says he hasn’t been in video games for a decade. Just an old hippie comics guy who’s here because he created everything the story is based on.
    Ironic how he uses this clip to show that the game devs didn’t care about or understand the source material and were too lazy to do the research before they put this product out there publicly to cash in on a popular franchise

    Man your so wrong about this game, it's not really fair to compare it to modern games because of technical limitations. This was the first batman game that really made you feel like batman, was it perfect... No. But the game did a lot of things right that you don't bother to acknowledge. If you look at reviews for this game it averages between a 6 or a 7 but in your review you make it out to be as bad as batman dark tomorrow.
