  • A technical film (the first part of a series) apparently aimed at the inexperienced anaesthetist. Most of the film looks at the theory of the stages of anaesthesia using Guedel's chart. Find out more: catalogue.wellcomelibrary.org/....

Injecting and administering chemicals that suppress the breathing without a proper way to control the breathing is like balancing on a circus cord.

@@becomematrix That's true I think intermittent positive pressure ventilators were developed in the 50s during the polio epidemic. A Dr told me medical students were recruited the ventilate manually by squeezing the rebreathing bags around the clock. I guess the 'iron lungs' were for more long-term use. I don't know much about those, except they used negative pressure to bring air into the lungs.

Did you know PCP was used as an anesthetic in the mid 1950s?

Then children started reporting that they had "nightmares" after PCP administration. Ketamine caused this problem too. Then the term "dissociative anesthetic" was coined to describe them. Originally, they thought of calling them "dream like" but thought it sounded too unprofessional.
