It's lovely to have a roof terrace off a guest bathroom. Guests have no reason to hurry, so a bathroom can really be a place to relax and indulge. I would enjoy a deep bath by the terrace door so I could open it in the warmer months and enjoy the view of the trees, sky and sunshine, and smell the lovely herbs and flowers growing outside. It's completely private so no one would see you, and such a unique experience to offer your guests.
It looks more amazing every time you demolish another wall or ceiling. That looked like good salvageable lumber from the ceiling to reuse elsewhere. Oh my goodness, Blossom, the cat looked so much like one of our beloved furbabies. His name was Simba. He came to us as a starved kitten. Altho he had a few health issues and a rough beginning, he was with us over 20 years. Still miss him. He passed in 2018. Their memories live on . Give Miss Blossom a big hug from me.🐱
Just put a false wall on the left of the bathroom door. That way you have a longer landing including the door to the upper terrace. Then in the false wall on the left have a doorway to the bathroom.
Yes, this! You can still turn it into a little reading nook with a bookcase and an armchair... or a window seat that could double as storage for roof terrace cushions and so on!
Maybe make the room with the fire escape into a TV/family room? Replace the stud work in the guest bedroom and use that as an en-suite guest shower room…

That ladder to the loft space , there is a simple solution. You put a hinged trap door that swings down on a latch release triggered by a long pole. Then you have an extendable metal ladder that can be pulled down for getting up to the loft, and pushed back up into the loft afterwards and then close the trap door

I would make a smaller guest bathroom in the far end of the room. Partition the room past the window by the door and turn that into a small sitting room or snug with the door to the roof. That would give you one window in each room with the added light from the sitting room door to the terrace. Then you don't have to go through the bathroom every time you want to step outside. So you would enter the sitting room from the hall with a new bathroom door in the new partition wall to the left. A guest bathroom would not have to be such a large space with a door to the outside. And with a sitting room you would have a more appropriate space for your comfy chair!
This is what I was thinking! Cut that room in half so bathroom on one side and sitting room/snug next to the terrace door. I think walking through the bathroom to get to the roof could be awkward.
I am thoroughly enjoying the restoration of this lovely home. You are taking it apart in such an organized way that much, especially the lumber, could be used again somewhere else! Keep up the good work.
What if you create a doorway between the proposed guest bedroom and the proposed bathroom and then build a new wall with a door in it across the bathroom, just passed the window that's beside the terrace door. Then you would have the space behind that wall for a nice bathroom with a window and the space between the new bathroom you just created and the guest bedroom could be a sitting room with a door going out to the terrace. Also, you could close off either the bedroom or the sitting room door to give you more wall space.
I sort of mentally rolled my eyes at keeping that ladder but as you were walking around it I said to myself "Well yes, it IS quite a nice ladder, isn't it?" 😂

If you want trades to quote, specify the job yourself. There are a lot of time wasters out there and getting a properly specified job saves us tradesmen hours of work, and it also puts us all on a level playing field so you know what we are pricing for.
I would make the terrace room into a small sitting room/bathroom for the guest suite. Access to the terrace would be off the sitting room, and the bathroom would be in the other half with one front-facing window. Don't sink master-bath money into a guest suite. It's a beautiful room, and should be big enough for comfortable dual use.

Oh, Charlie. Long sleeves, man. Long sleeves when you're working with insulation. Especially if it is fiberglass which gets little tiny pieces on your skin and clothes. And washing up afterwards do it in cold water it's closes your pores pores so you don't get those little tiny pieces in your pores
I love seeing what is behind all the later changes such as drop ceilings and the walls that divided everything into flats. From watching, it looks like a lot will be determined by what a structural engineer determines about weight-bearing walls, roof condition and weight tolerances (for the roof terrace), and asbestos removal, and by what the plasterers, electricians and plumbers say. Waiting for people to get out has to be incredibly frustrating! I love all that you're doimg with his place.
It's amazing how much you've gotten done. The roof terrace is interesting. It could be a hidden sanctuary with a wicker chair and small table to enjoy with a cup of tea and good book. I can see it with a few planters filled with flowers and some bright cushions on the chairs. Your house is going to be beautiful.
Finding the postcard of your rectory is so cool! I agree with you about the greenhouse. It looks nice in the postcard but would adding it back really add anything to the building? For the guest suite, the first room looks like it would be big enough for a bedroom with an attached bath. The second room could then be a nice sitting room, with access to the roof terrace. I don't know if the situation with contractors is the same in the UK as it is in the US, but here, the contractors that show up when they are supposed to, and do the work they are contracted to do, are somewhat hard to find and they are very busy because they are reliable. Word of mouth is the best way to find them it seems. I think you are making a lot of progress. Sometimes, keeping at it is hard to do. -mike

You could keep the ladder or part of it, paint or varnish it, and use it as a towel ladder in the bathroom area. the wooden widow shutters you could get sandblasted it would save you loads of time and not cost too much - sandblasting cost per m2 typically falls within the range of £10 upwards depending on your locale; or could get a DIY system .

What a delightful find that postcard was! As slow as your progress seems, you are making progress, and the beautiful bones of this lovely old rectory are beginning to be revealed. Your vision for the guest room is lovely, and easy to picture. Perhaps a little bistro set surrounded by potted plants would be not too much weight for the old roof to bear. Will you put a railing around the edge? Probably a very American suggestion, but the one I envision is very European in style, simple wrought iron a subtle but graceful design. Dreaming about all the possibilities... love your idea for an overstuffed chair in the corner where one can enjoy a cup of tea and a good book. If the greenhouse had iron frames for the windows, it might have been taken down as scrap during the war. Glass was needed, too. You could put a conservatory back without it being that exact conservatory.

For the roof terrace, you would need to calculate the potential roof load possible first to ensure it can take even people walking on it. Notice there is a path structure for people to cross; that can indicate it was not considered particularly strong to begin wirth. Calculating roof load has to be in addition to natural increases such as snow. Best to ask your structural engineer for advice before putting anything onto it.
Loving the videos, well done. My memory of old rectories in the sixties were that they were pretty basic. Often no carpet upstairs just scrubbed pine floors with occasional rugs where bare feet may stand. Some family homes but some sole occupants local rector who generally lived in the downstairs floor. Heating was Rayburn stove in the kitchen and the occasional electric fire in living room. Always too cold in the midwinter. You dressed quickly! Often two staircases, neither lavish, but a basic one from the bedroom to the kitchen for staff. A larger staircase for the family. Often the rectory would have an ambiance and a comfortable smell all of its own. Your videos serve to remind me of times gone by, and I thank you for that.

me too but we're too old with too many back problems to do it, and not enough money to afford someone else to do it. Besides, I think if you got tradies in to do the lot, you'd lose a lot of the satisfaction that DIY brings. Doing so much yourself not only saves money but goes a long way towards making the place feel like it's yours. I still feel like an interloper in our current house and we've been here 9 years this week, despite having renovated parts of the house.
Its a delight to see you uncovering the original spaces one step at a time. Here's hoping you can find a great set of tradesman who wouldn't mind their business being advertised to nearly 30K subscribers at this point. I was reminded how wide Georgian doors are in this style of house (well in the principal rooms) and it looks like the doors are just trimmed in ply, so I'm looking forward to when it time to take that off and reveal the original doors. Oh and editing to say you can buy library ladder hardware, for the old fire escape ladder - if any house had the proportions and the grandeur to have a floor to ceiling library - or even a nook with library ladder it is yours.
Dip and strip the shutters. You could do it yourself, but it's a learning process, and you will mess some of them up. It's also more likely to mess you up than the small probability of complications from asbestos. It's worth the cash. Stick your safe in the floor void ...

It looks as though many of the doors have a flat panel of chipboard over them as an attempt at modernization. It would be very interesting to see some original doors revealed in a future video.

Better and better each time you share your videos. Finding that post card is quite something. That green house on the side really does nothing for the house and, as you said, you have the room to put one elsewhere if you wish. The dining room with the ceiling rose and that fireplace are just screaming to be decorated. All sorts of possibilities, from period to more modern or a fusion.
Great work 👏, keep all that timber it will save you so much money and the quality of it is likely to be much better than today's quick grown stuff. When is the asbestos getting removed?
I'm sure it's in your plans, but I think you will find a lovely original door under the panel board of the guest bedroom. The guest bathroom could also be halved and made into a little sitting room for guests with access to the terrace. Just one of my dreams for your gorgeous house. Well done guys, the rectory is starting to return. Living in the rectory in those flats must have been so depressing. Truly shows the greed of developers. Two things I noticed. The archway where the squirrel nuts were found, should come down and provide an amazing room co-joined. The door out to the roof, as you face the door, to the right, you probably noticed the cracking in the shape of a boarded up door, wondering if it was a door at some stage. So amazing to have all these glimpses into the past and the techniques used in construction back in the day.
You are making splendid progress! I know how frustrating it is to get quotes and renovation work done. In January of 2021, my son and I moved into a cottage in the N. Florida panhandle. It seemed like every project was a major ordeal, but now that the work is done, we have a lovely, little house that's a joy to live in. You will achieve that, too, only you'll have a grand home!
This is a small suggestion regarding the "Crawl Space" under the house. Think about adding a few lights and maybe an outlet. It reduces the scary aspect of running into small varmints, spiders or hitting your head. Workmen will thank you. We did this under our old house and it has made insulating pipes and other repairs easier. I think it is smart to clean as you go. Once a job is completed, it can be daunting to face a big clean up. I think that having the proposed guest bathroom with a walk out onto a terrace seems odd, but I do like the idea of a walk out terrace. Do you know if the wall between the proposed guest bath and the proposed guest bedroom is load bearing? If no then you might have the option of opening a doorway in the corner of the guest bedroom and creating a small 90 degree hallway to the existing door that walks out onto the terrace. Another possibility is to brick up/close the current doorway to the terrace and open up a new doorway from the proposed guest bedroom to the terrace. A walk out terrace from the bedroom seems more appropriate.
Great job, That was great to see the ceiling was intact and a big yahoo for sure. I agree with you about the green house . It was a nice design back in the day but not needed for sure. At 13:40, I see some sort of lines resemble a door there. You are right, it would make a great patio out there! Please do check the roof joists before putting a patio! Changing out the pipe handrails to wood (or PVC if you choose that route) all around the perimeter of the porch roof. The fire escape stairs, you can get a foldable ladder that goes flush to the ceiling and repurpose the stairs elsewhere in the house, probably as a decoration piece. I was imagined at one time, there was a corner fireplace in that guest bedroom.

I know a large bathroom is appealing, but moving forward guests may have children, would a small room not be worth considering in the guest area? It might be worth considering a rework of floor plans. That kitchen area in the large bedroom would provide a quite generous bathroom, perhaps with 2 way access. And the balcony could become a small lounge area with a smaller bedroom off. Just some ideas. Of course you have the floor plans, and know what can be done. If guests have children, they usually want them close by. Enjoying your videos so much.
Oh Hello Blossom, you are a beautiful one! For the terrace, maybe you can change the "kitchen" window to another door? Maybe you can't keep the step staircase due safety regulations, so both rooms could also change a bit... and i see no violence in removing that false ceiling...12:18 or so, i would do a glass partition instead of the stud wall, some indoor greenery with the ladder as accent and growing support, but it's your house...

Seemed like it was still alive, so I carefully put the little one on a magazine, and put it outside. The cat looked at me as if to say..."here you go..." -first time a cat ever gave me something - other than, of course, love, laughter and pure joy! Could've done without the mouse though...
I think a window seat would look lovely in the bay window in the guest bedroom. With some pillows it would look so cute. I thought too, that I would tell you the difference between some of the English words and american words. Just for fun. English call it skirting board, American version is baseboard. Drawing room,= living room, and lining paper= wall paper. I recommend watching Stroup mansion. She has ideas that look beautiful in her house and she does the work herself with her father. You might find inspiration. She collects animal bones too. So if you find anymore squirrel bones you will know who wants them.

Hi guys, it’s looks like there’s a blocked up doorway between the guest bedroom and bathroom. You can see cracks on the wall beside the door to the roof terrace that look very door sized. Also it looks like it might be the original panelled door into the guest bedroom that’s had ply put over it to “update” it in the 70’s

I would make the terrace room into a small sitting room/bathroom for the guest suite. Access to the terrace would be off the sitting room, and the bathroom would be in the other half with one front-facing window. Don't sink master-bath money into a guest suite. It's a beautiful room, and should be big enough for comfortable dual use.

Oh, Charlie. Long sleeves, man. Long sleeves when you're working with insulation. Especially if it is fiberglass which gets little tiny pieces on your skin and clothes. And washing up afterwards do it in cold water it's closes your pores pores so you don't get those little tiny pieces in your pores
I love seeing what is behind all the later changes such as drop ceilings and the walls that divided everything into flats. From watching, it looks like a lot will be determined by what a structural engineer determines about weight-bearing walls, roof condition and weight tolerances (for the roof terrace), and asbestos removal, and by what the plasterers, electricians and plumbers say. Waiting for people to get out has to be incredibly frustrating! I love all that you're doimg with his place.

It's amazing how much you've gotten done. The roof terrace is interesting. It could be a hidden sanctuary with a wicker chair and small table to enjoy with a cup of tea and good book. I can see it with a few planters filled with flowers and some bright cushions on the chairs. Your house is going to be beautiful.
Finding the postcard of your rectory is so cool! I agree with you about the greenhouse. It looks nice in the postcard but would adding it back really add anything to the building? For the guest suite, the first room looks like it would be big enough for a bedroom with an attached bath. The second room could then be a nice sitting room, with access to the roof terrace. I don't know if the situation with contractors is the same in the UK as it is in the US, but here, the contractors that show up when they are supposed to, and do the work they are contracted to do, are somewhat hard to find and they are very busy because they are reliable. Word of mouth is the best way to find them it seems. I think you are making a lot of progress. Sometimes, keeping at it is hard to do.

You could keep the ladder or part of it, paint or varnish it, and use it as a towel ladder in the bathroom area. the wooden widow shutters you could get sandblasted it would save you loads of time and not cost too much - sandblasting cost per m2 typically falls within the range of £10 upwards depending on your locale; or could get a DIY system .

What a delightful find that postcard was! As slow as your progress seems, you are making progress, and the beautiful bones of this lovely old rectory are beginning to be revealed. Your vision for the guest room is lovely, and easy to picture. Perhaps a little bistro set surrounded by potted plants would be not too much weight for the old roof to bear. Will you put a railing around the edge? Probably a very American suggestion, but the one I envision is very European in style, simple wrought iron a subtle but graceful design. Dreaming about all the possibilities... love your idea for an overstuffed chair in the corner where one can enjoy a cup of tea and a good book. I'm really enjoying following your progress. ~ Lisa

If the greenhouse had iron frames for the windows, it might have been taken down as scrap during the war. Glass was needed, too. You could put a conservatory back without it being that exact conservatory.

For the roof terrace, you would need to calculate the potential roof load possible first to ensure it can take even people walking on it. Notice there is a path structure for people to cross; that can indicate it was not considered particularly strong to begin wirth.
Calculating roof load has to be in addition to natural increases such as snow. Best to ask your structural engineer for advice before putting anything onto it.
Loving the videos, well done. My memory of old rectories in the sixties were that they were pretty basic. Often no carpet upstairs just scrubbed pine floors with occasional rugs where bare feet may stand. Some family homes but some sole occupants local rector who generally lived in the downstairs floor. Heating was Rayburn stove in the kitchen and the occasional electric fire in living room. Always too cold in the midwinter. You dressed quickly! Often two staircases, neither lavish, but a basic one from the bedroom to the kitchen for staff. A larger staircase for the family. Often the rectory would have an ambiance and a comfortable smell all of its own. Your videos serve to remind me of times gone by, and I thank you for that.

me too but we're too old with too many back problems to do it, and not enough money to afford someone else to do it. Besides, I think if you got tradies in to do the lot, you'd lose a lot of the satisfaction that DIY brings. Doing so much yourself not only saves money but goes a long way towards making the place feel like it's yours. I still feel like an interloper in our current house and we've been here 9 years this week, despite having renovated parts of the house.
Its a delight to see you uncovering the original spaces one step at a time. Here's hoping you can find a great set of tradesman who wouldn't mind their business being advertised to nearly 30K subscribers at this point. I was reminded how wide Georgian doors are in this style of house (well in the principal rooms) and it looks like the doors are just trimmed in ply, so I'm looking forward to when it time to take that off and reveal the original doors. Oh and editing to say you can buy library ladder hardware, for the old fire escape ladder - if any house had the proportions and the grandeur to have a floor to ceiling library - or even a nook with library ladder it is yours.
That room actually lends itself having a reading room with access to the roof for relaxing in the summer
Dip and strip the shutters. You could do it yourself, but it's a learning process, and you will mess some of them up. It's also more likely to mess you up than the small probability of complications from asbestos. It's worth the cash.
Stick your safe in the floor void ...
No need to remove or strip shutters. They look fine as they are with original patina. Just clean and free up the hinges, locks and jambs.

It looks as though many of the doors have a flat panel of chipboard over them as an attempt at modernization. It would be very interesting to see some original doors revealed in a future video.

Better and better each time you share your videos. Finding that post card is quite something. That green house on the side really does nothing for the house and, as you said, you have the room to put one elsewhere if you wish.
The dining room with the ceiling rose and that fireplace are just screaming to be decorated. All sorts of possibilities, from period to more modern or a fusion.

Well done guys, the rectory is starting to return. Living in the rectory in those flats must have been so depressing. Truly shows the greed of developers. Two things I noticed. The archway where the squirrel nuts were found, should come down and provide an amazing room co-joined. The door out to the roof, as you face the door, to the right, you probably noticed the cracking in the shape of a boarded up door, wondering if it was a door at some stage. So amazing to have all these glimpses into the past and the techniques used in construction back in the day.
You are making splendid progress! I know how frustrating it is to get quotes and renovation work done. In January of 2021, my son and I moved into a cottage in the N. Florida panhandle. It seemed like every project was a major ordeal, but now that the work is done, we have a lovely, little house that's a joy to live in. You will achieve that, too, only you'll have a grand home!
Demolition tip - put a box fan in the window to blow the dust out.

This is a small suggestion regarding the "Crawl Space" under the house. Think about adding a few lights and maybe an outlet. It reduces the scary aspect of running into small varmints, spiders or hitting your head. Workmen will thank you. We did this under our old house and it has made insulating pipes and other repairs easier. I think it is smart to clean as you go. Once a job is completed, it can be daunting to face a big clean up. I think that having the proposed guest bathroom with a walk out onto a terrace seems odd, but I do like the idea of a walk out terrace. Do you know if the wall between the proposed guest bath and the proposed guest bedroom is load bearing?
If no then you might have the option of opening a doorway in the corner of the guest bedroom and creating a small 90 degree hallway to the existing door that walks out onto the terrace.
Another possibility is to brick up/close the current doorway to the terrace and open up a new doorway from the proposed guest bedroom to the terrace. A walk out terrace from the bedroom seems more appropriate.
Put a spiral staircase coming down from the attic to the room with the exit door.

At 13:40, I see some sort of lines resemble a door there. You are right, it would make a great patio out there! Please do check the roof joists before putting a patio! Changing out the pipe handrails to wood (or PVC if you choose that route) all around the perimeter of the porch roof. The fire escape stairs, you can get a foldable ladder that goes flush to the ceiling and repurpose the stairs elsewhere in the house, probably as a decoration piece. I was imagined at one time, there was a corner fireplace in that guest bedroom.
The postcard of the house is gorgeous. My opinion is It is going to be your home make it Your home. There can be parts of Old home . You can honor in your way. Can't wait to see what you will do with it.Good luck.❤
I know a large bathroom is appealing, but moving forward guests may have children, would a small room not be worth considering in the guest area? It might be worth considering a rework of floor plans. That kitchen area in the large bedroom would provide a quite generous bathroom, perhaps with 2 way access. And the balcony could become a small lounge area with a smaller bedroom off. Just some ideas. Of course you have the floor plans, and know what can be done. If guests have children, they usually want them close by. Enjoying your videos so much.
Oh Hello Blossom, you are a beautiful one! For the terrace, maybe you can change the "kitchen" window to another door? Maybe you can't keep the step staircase due safety regulations, so both rooms could also change a bit... and i see no violence in removing that false ceiling...12:18 or so, i would do a glass partition instead of the stud wall, some indoor greenery with the ladder as accent and growing support, but it's your house...

Seemed like it was still alive, so I carefully put the little one on a magazine, and put it outside. The cat looked at me as if to say..."here you go..." -first time a cat ever gave me something - other than, of course, love, laughter and pure joy! Could've done without the mouse though...

I think a window seat would look lovely in the bay window in the guest bedroom. With some pillows it would look so cute. I thought too, that I would tell you the difference between some of the English words and american words. Just for fun. English call it skirting board, American version is baseboard. Drawing room,= living room, and lining paper= wall paper. I recommend watching Stroup mansion. She has ideas that look beautiful in her house and she does the work herself with her father. You might find inspiration. She collects animal bones too. So if you find anymore squirrel bones you will know who wants them.

Hi guys, it’s looks like there’s a blocked up doorway between the guest bedroom and bathroom. You can see cracks on the wall beside the door to the roof terrace that look very door sized. Also it looks like it might be the original panelled door into the guest bedroom that’s had ply put over it to “update” it in the 70’s
I am loving the pace of your videography. You pan slowly as you refresh our memory of the work done previously. Not all renovators do this. Thank you. Also, I marvel at the ease of your demo work.
