I do this too. I've found the best thing is to just draw! Who cares if you don't like it learn from it and try again. Learn from the "failures" as artist we are the hardest on ourselves. People love my work even though I don't. It's taken me 10-12 years to realize it's ok to mess up and try again or it's ok to not like everything you just gotta do it! Keep working keep learning keep refining! We're all struggling with this part just at different times! 💪💪💪💪

This video and the art and artist are brilliant!!!
I get that feeling every time I paint, less when I draw or color with markers and only once in a while when I'm working with digital...but every time I paint I get that low...great time to put it away. Grab coffee, play with the kids, and then come back when I'm reactivated and have fresh eyes again.
You're right about loving it and trusting that you can do it with all your heart.

I often get this low at some point. So much that I have spent time understanding it until I came across a video about neuroscience that was actually explaining the science behind ‘’lows’’ and why celebrating something big, can often follow with that low. The simplest explanation is in the chemical, when you get that high of happiness you got about what you have accomplished, you get a release of dopamine, and after that release of dopamine, is often followed by a ‘’low’’ and I think like you said, these are necessary, probably also your brain saying, you need to rest. Chemical rebalance. Enjoy your video and happy to see you didn’t edited that low. So many of us go through it. Great job man!

i either feel fear with the threat of physical pain while painting, or i feel absolutely stagnated and stuck. I don't really know why that is, maybe its the fear of failing? maybe its the frustration of having the feeling im not doing enough? i really want to put my own essence into my work, but its so damn hard! i can't finish my work because for that i need to step out my comfort zone and become a stronger me, which is terrifying! me? an actual strong person who has his shit in order?! terrifying, gives me a fight or flight response. and im nervous enough by nature as it is. its absolutely exhausting.
people like you and grim for example really help, it gives an insight in what you can achieve if you keep pushing! It also eases the whole process, the waterspray to fix a canvas saved me sooo many headaches for example! the positive attitude of not being afraid to be honest and trying something new is so damn motivating. its like im learning alongside you.
it helps to realize that the act of painting can teach you to deal with anxiety's, to learn to make decisions and stick with them, that doing something wrong is okay because it makes you a better and smarter artist. that 'earned' self respect instead of 'taken' self respect.
    Big dreams, small steps!
"here and now is our day of torment, here and now is our day of joy! here and now is our OPPORTUNITY! choose ye this day and say unto thine own heart, 'I AM MY OWN REDEEMER' "
to me personally, that overwhelming fear and anxiety tells me i'm doing good! Im challenging myself and stepping out of my comfort zone, which will lead me to greener pastures.
Thanks for being so open about it, its part of the artist lifestyle and should not be shunned.
    You rock!

I’ve gone as far as 3 years without producing anything until that feeling hits me then I go and can’t stop. But I have gone into that slump in drawings or paintings. It sucks but you have to just let it set until you’re ready to continue. If I were in your position I probably would have just took a pic of it with iPad and imported into your art app and planned out an idea on it until you were satisfied then tackled it on canvas. The feeling your feeling I think most people feel the same I find it the hardest to start , sometimes I’ll look at a blank canvas for weeks as im afraid to start as I don’t want to fail , what is silly as you can always paint over mistakes, but even knowing this it still doesn’t change how I feel and you are right it’s a very emotional thing not just to paint even to draw , for me it’s like sharing my inner self even though I don’t want to , after 40 years since I started to draw and paint I still feel like this , artist people are more in touch with our inner conciseness we create the storm inside of are mind and we must figure out how to let the sun shine , as always fantastic art work , and painting canvas isn’t always fun but as long as your happy at the end and your happy with what you’ve created, then you can release the built up emotions and relax and enjoy, 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I too am an artist, but what you touched on today with the "painting low" is so relatable on so many different levels. I struggle with the completion of project at times because I overthink It. I put so much of myself into my work that I want it to be perfect. It touched me to hear such a positive person and the amazing talent you are has similarities in effort, needs motivation & encouragement at a times to keep pushing. I thought you just get to a point where it's simply automatic to produce ideas and quality work. Especially after working so hard/long to get to a certain point. You made me realize it's an on going process to continue believing in yourself, trusting the process and keep going thru the tough times cause you know it gets better. Thank you smoe nova.

@@SMOENOVA For me there is something powerful when someone I respect shares their struggles. I find that it validates my own struggles; but it also shows me that there is another side to it, a side that is far stronger than the struggle, almost like a release of pain and fear. Hehehe, picked up another amazing print. Love your work Smoe!
Now to talk about the video-
Artwork is a very personal expression of who you are. When we attach a price to our work the artist holds himself accountable for perfection because if he was the client he would expect the highest level of craft from who he hired.
Personally, I don't think any artist should fall in love with their work or they will become bland and never evolve into a higher artist. The mental pain is just part of the process.
Never stop chasing perfection Smoe, you are one of the elite writers.

I can totally relate to your “painting low” and I’m glad you left it in the video. This happens to me with about 3/4 of all canvasses that I work on, in the exact same fashion that you mention. It’s funny that you mention the difference in mindset between canvas and walls because I feel the same way. I walk up to a wall with very little planning and just dive in. Thanks for being real with the process on this one. All to often on CZcams, you just see the glossy parts and not the in-between.

  • @christopherdelaney6263

To put in into just a few words... ;) on a commissioned piece the stress starts from day 1. If the piece isn't speaking to me, as difficult as it is, i must walk away for at least a little while even if there is a time crunch. We don't work well when we are tired and cars don't run unless they have fuel and regular maintenance. The real trick is to not allow yourself to get so low that you can't match it with the high of the finished product!
We don't know good without bad,
We don't know relief without a little stress.
    We're only human.
And your art is absolutely, 100% YOU!
Fan for life. Keep it up homie!
Gonna get into my couch cushions to try and scrape enough together to grab one of these prints before they're gone!
    Big ups!

I have times where the art work flows out of me it a really amazing way, and the “canvas speaks to me” as you put it, and other times where I just can’t feel a connection to the piece, and I get flooded with feelings of self doubt and inadequacy. Sometimes I can push through these times, and other times I have to take a break for a bit. But the end result is always far worth the ups and downs. You are a total badass my friend. Yo Smoe, there's a tool (primarily used by Sign writers) to help keep lines steady.
It's called a 'Mahl stick' or 'sign writer's stick'.
Basically a light stick with a leather ball on one end - (so that you don't damage your work).
It allows you to rest your writing arm on it, so you can make straight and sure lines (without the 'jitters' that you get when drawing lines from a distance without supporting your hand)
You can easily make one yourself - no need to buy :)
I've made 2 myself. One from an old carbon fiber hollow fishing rod - works very well.
But for instance - one of those thin bamboo sticks that you use in the garden (to hold plants up) would work very well too.
If you stick a ball on the end (I used a bouncy ball) and then wrap it with cotton (old clean tea towel for instance), or - better yet - leather or fake leather...
    You're done :)
    It's surprisingly useful
Everyone who does brush lettering uses one. For good reason (:
    Hope this helps
