Note: Joseph SCHMIDT : Birth: Mar. 4, 1904 Death: Nov. 16, 1942. Operatic tenor. Schmidt was born in Davideny, Buchavina, Rumania, to a Jewish family. From a very young age he sang in his Shul choir and he displayed a natural talent for singing. He was keen to pursue a musical career, but sympathetic as his mother was to his ideas, so was his father against it. During the First World War he moved with his parents to Czernowitz where, at the age of 20, Joseph gave his first public performance as a concert singer. His uncle, Leo Engel, a crafty manager, took him to Berlin in 1928. It was unfortunate that a tenor voice of such brilliance and quality emanated from a frame that was less than five feet tall. Although his stature effectively barred him from opera, there were other outlets for his outstanding talents. He appeared in a number of films, he made records and he made countless appearances on the radio. He travelled in Europe, giving numerous concerts and recording sessions in Vienna, Paris and Londyn. As a Jew, he was by a miracle saved from the sad emigrants fate merely because of, as it is sometimes claimed in the sources, the nazi Minister of Propaganda, Jospeh Goebbels personal admiration for his talent.
Nevertheless, the Jewish fate knocked to his door when the Second World War broke out. Joseph managed to make his way to France where he settled in the unoccupied zone. When France was defeated he made his way to Switzerland, where he arrived virtually penniless. Although he was in possession of an American visa and was very well known, due to the inhuman and pro-nazi policy of the Swiss government, he was interned as an „illegal refugee ( has anybody ever seen a „legal reefugee?). He was never a very strong man and, sadly his health deteriorated while in the camp, and owing to a lack of proper medical attention (as a Jew he was denied a proper diagnose and a hospital observation in a Zurich clinic and sent back to his camp in spite of increasing pains in his chest) he died on November 16, 1942 in Gierenbad Camp, near Hindwhill. He was buried in the Friezenberg Cemetery, near Zurich and it's reported that all the 350 inmates of the camp attended his funeral, in defiance of authority. - Hudba

Ce grand ténor de toute petite taille, au timbre de voix splendide que le destin n'épargnera pas, bouleversait ma mère qui ne pouvait l'écouter sans avoir les larmes aux yeux. Je crois que c'est l'effet que provoque en général sa voix. Sans doute parce que dans sa façon de chanter si particulière on y décèle comme une longue plainte, peut-être même une prière. Joseph Schmidt en arrive a être aussi émouvant dans des airs d'opéras que dans ses chansons, souvent issues de ses films.

Niemand kann das schöner singen.
Dieses Lied ist so einzigartig gesungen.
So was von wirklich. Es stimmt so sehr und das schon 1936 da war meine Mutti 2 jahre alt.
Und später nach dem.Krieg als sie hat flüchten müssen nach Westdeutschland und als der mauerbau kam 1961 und sie nicht mehr zu ihrer Mutti fahren könnte viele Jahre war sie glücklich das sie mir 1964 das Leben schenkte. Sie hat mir ihre ganze Liebe gegeben. Ihre ganze. Oft lagen wir zusammen im Bett und hörten Radio und es kam dieses lied. Was für ein tiefer Schmerz es war für sie nicht zu ihrer Mutti nach Berlin zu können. Ich habe es auch so empfunden und es war für mich als Kind sehr schlimm sie so leiden zu sehen. Ich Weine jetzt. Sie ist 2014 gestorben und mit ihr mein Leben. Ich werde es nie überwinden.
Ich hätte wirklich die liebste Mutter der Welt. Und deswegen passt dieses Lied heute zu mir

Ein so schönes Lied - ein so trauriges Lied .... Für mich ist dieses Lied auch ein Stück Kindheitserinnerung, lief es doch häufig bei meinen Grosseltern und beim Wunschkonzert in den 1950/60iger Jahren im Radio. Heute kann ich nur diese wunderschöne Stimme bewundern, ein absolut grossartiger Tenor, einer der Grössten!
Und ich immer wieder schlucken, wenn ich dies höre!

this one of my very favourite numbers of Joseph Schmidt or in in fact of any other artist ... He may have been better off if he had stayed in Germany in fact ... but no one can really be sure ... Had he stayed in the USA he would have been saved from the European Trauma all together

Poor guy fled to Switzerland. They put him into a refugee camp with no heat nor a blanket. He slept under news papers to keep himself warm. Caught pneumonia. Went to hospital. They released him back to the camp. He died. Awful.

However the issue here, was the hypocrity of neutral Swiss Government to lead this SUPERB artist, to death.

Es berührt mich, dass dieser Liedtext leider nur zu wahr auch für sein eigenes Leben galt. Joseph Schmidt starb am 16. November 1942 in der Gegend, wo ich aufgewachsen bin; im Zürcher Oberland, beim Internierungslager Girenbad, nachdem ihm die Flucht in die Schweiz im September 1942 endlich gelungen war. Zwei Tag nach seinem Tod kam die in der Zwischenzeit erteilte Arbeitserlaubnis im Lager an.
"Ein Lied geht um die Welt" - Möge Joseph Schmidts "Lied" uns zum respektvollen Zusammenleben bilden!

I am glad that you refocus the discussion upon Joseph Schmidt's death in Switzerland and leave overgeneralizations about banking laws apart, as the argumentative link would be quite daring for that. So, in respecting your will to a fair discussion, I do state here that the head of refugee affairs in Switzerland during WWII, Herr Rotmund, indeed was fancying Nazi philosophy. Under his command, Jewish refugees in Switzerland got this status only towards the last years of WWII.

The Swiss of that time did not kill Joseph Schmidt. He escaped there as a refugee, albeit he got his working permit only after 2 months after his arrival.
If the Swiss had killed him, how do you explain the fact that his friends donated a plaque at the inn thanking the host who let him rest on her canopy in her living room when he was dead-sick from cardial problems?

@Jeansschwimmer Wer bezahlte, oder von De Gaulle, Franco, Mussolini, der Republik Irland, Portugal, Ungarn, Schweden oder Finnland unterstützt wurde mit Pass oder Geld, der konnte noch in die Schweiz fliehen. Das taten auch viele. Vor allem über die 'freien Gebiete' in Vichy-Frankreich bis Ende 1943, Anfang 1944 (bis März).

Er musste wege der Judenverfolgungen im Oktober 1942 illegal in die Schweiz flüchten, kam dort in das Internierungslager Girenbad bei Zürich und verstarb an plötzlichem Herzversagen.

Any refugee in Switzerland had to go through some months of internment camp in the beginning, until she or he got a working permit. This was the same for British and American bomber pilots, for Polish soldiers, for Italian partisans, and for the Jews that managed to reach Switzerland. Jews were not recognized as refugees right from the beginning, and the head of the refugee camps in Switzerland (Mr. Rotmund) was adhering to Nazi philosophy, yes.
But Joseph Schmidt died in freedom.
Viele Nazis hatten Menschen auf dem Gewissen.Diejenigen,die sich heute so nennen,haben keine Ahnung und kommen sich wichtig vor.Das sollte man wirklich verbieten.Sie sollten sich Filme aus der damaligen Zeit ansehen.Ich selbst war bei Kriegsende noch ein Kind.Joseph Schmidt hatte auch ein trauriges Schicksal.Daher wurde er nur knapp 39 Jahre.Er bleibt wie weitere große Sänger unvergessen.Allerdings,es gab auch Nazis,die unter Lebensgefahr den Juden halfen.Ein Beispiel war Oskar Schindler.

I am not newish,but I can see that the swiss treated the refugees very bafky,no heat in freezing conditions, very I'll sent to hospital, doctor accused him of malingering, threw him out a kind person let him sit on her sofa he died there 10 mins.later. that was not neutrality
