How To Fix a Leaking Toilet Tank - Toilet Tank Repair - Remove Rusted Toilet Bolts

- For a toilet tank that is leaking, you will need a toilet tank repair kit. This will repair a leak from the bolts that hold the tank to the bowl and the gasket that joins the 2 pieces.
Most toilet tanks are held onto the bowl with 2 bolts. But there are some that have 3 bolts. Look at your toilet before going to the hardware store, you may need to purchase an extra set of bolts and washers.
You should be able to replace the bolts by using a large slotted screwdriver, an adjustable wrench and pliers. If the bolts are rusted in place, you will need a hack saw blade and locking pliers.
In most cases this is a pretty easy project. Be careful of the porcelain, it can be cracked if you tighten down too hard on the bolts.

This video help me to begin to figure out why the toilet is leaking water. You just help me and mom out greatly, cuz we have no help and didn’t know what to do. Thanks again
My toilet started leaking tonight. I found this video and was able to tighten the screws inside the tank. It stopped leaking! Now I will at least have enough time to go to the store and buy the parts tomorrow. I am a single mom and I had no idea what to do, thought I would have to replace the whole toilet, till I watched your video. Ty!!!

Real "regular" guy.... in a real life senerio, with a real life toilet (like many of us who fix our own stuff around the house) situation, that many of us may have. Thanks for your effort, the video is authentic & appreciated!! Great job!

Thank you so much! I'm a single female and need to replace mine because they are leaking. So happy I don't have to call someone and spend money needlessly! These CZcams videos have really been a lifesaver for me from plumbing to car repairs. 💞
Thanks for this great video! I accepted the challenge and completely replaced all parts in the tank with a brand new all-in-one kit. I was afraid to buy the wrong parts at the local hardware store so I brought my tank with me. One tip - my toilet has a flush handle on the side of the tank. My kit came with a front flush handle so I improvised and kept my old side flush handle assembly. I had to bend the chain rod to hover above the flap. It worked perfectly. No more leaky tank and no more running toilet. The iron bolts in my tank were nearly disintegrated like yours.. I could not unscrew them so I hammered a flat head screw driver down on the bolt inside the tank and knocked them out easily.
Very informative and nicely edited. Great to see the out of the ordinary challenges like rusted bolts addressed.

You should really learn some basic home repair things. I grew up helping my dad do stuff and then I worked with my bf on many jobs. I was an electrician apprentice for awhile as well. I have fixed MANY things when my other bfs could not. You should FOR SURE have a basic tool set. CZcams is very helpful. You can find almost anything you may need help with. There’s a few rules to keep in mind. ALWAYS turn off the electric AT THE BREAKER BEFORE doing anything where you might come in contact with the wire. ALWAYS turn off the water BEFORE doing anything where the water might leak. Measure twice, cut once, will save you A LOT of headaches. Measure 12 times if need be. There are MANY contractors out there that just rip people off and put “band aids” on the customers problem instead of fixing it the proper way. It’s sad because they will, for sure take advantage of the elderly, especially women. I would suggest in the future, looking on CZcams for whatever problem you have and watch the video so you can see what they do and how they do it, then when you call someone, you’ll have a better idea if they are ripping you off or not. There is also an app called Nextdoor. It is very similar to Facebook but when you sign up it groups you in with people in and around your neighborhood. It’s great for recommendations. People are always on there asking for electricians, handyman, plumbers, contractors….and this way you know someone has already used them and we’re happy with the service they got
I appreciate your knowledge, time, and willingness to teach those of us facing this issue one time or another.
This video helped me fix my toilet! I didn't need to get new screws or anything, but it needed to be reseated and tightened, so showing how to drain and unhook everything was a lifesaver! Thank you!

I too had to reconfigure the kit (same kit as shown here) to stop all leaks. No metal washer in tank and rubber washer immediately below the tank, so bolt, rubber washer, tank, rubber washer, metal washer, bolt and get this good and snug. That's the seal. Then the wing nuts are simply holding the sealed tank on the toilet base.
Your video is the only one of many that actually show the correct placement of the washers for the bowl bolts. Great instructional video.
Thanks. It's been about 20 years since I did this last. You video was a great refresher/step by step guide.
Woah .. I have the same problem and gave CZcams a try . The most amazing thing is that a plumber (the most honest plumber in the world) can find a true nightmare that will throw any estimates out the window. Thanks for the tutorial and thanks for the lesson on plumbing ethics and client expectations.
Thanks for your video. It was easy to understand and informative. Also, I had the same problem you did with the corroded bolts, so your tip with the hacksaw helped.
Well, lubricant didn’t help on the tank bolts. I did exactly what you did, used a hacksaw to cut bolts. But, bolts were so rusty and deteriorated, that I used an angle grinder and cut wing nut away from tank. Cleaned tank real good in bolting locations. Upon snugging bolting to tank, I put silicone on top of each slotted bolt head. Let it cure for 5 hours before subjecting them to water. A reminder, every once in a while check those wing nuts, and just tighten them some more. Repair was completed on 6-24-2020. Thanks for your video. 6-30-2020
Thanks for the video, I noticed a leak while cleaning toilet this morning and my floors were wet but thankfully I'll get it fixed next week. I don't have any of the tools I need, bro and Dad took most of my tools but bro will be in next Monday, I have a chore for him to do when he gets home and it is a 2 person thing to do. This was a great Video...definitely need a second person to help with getting bolts out and back on.
Thanks for the video! All, save yourself doing this every couple years and get brass or brass plated bolts. Secondly, contrary to some instructions, do not put anything but the brass bolt and the rubber washer inside the tank. A steel/zinc washer under the head of a brass bolt followed by a rubber washer will seep water (metal on metal), the washer will corrode, and you will be doing this all over again sooner than you want.
Thank you!! I bought the parts, fixed myself in about 45 minutes with your assistance and reading directions! Had a quote to repair for me of $285.00! I spent less than $10.00 you saved me $275.00! I am thrilled!

With all this amazing nano technology and I swear the technology of a toilet hasn't changed in 100 years! They still use metal bolts and plastic that corrodes in a few years!
It's all about the money. They want you to keep coming back and buy replacement parts. BTW, good luck finding brass bolts at Lowe's or Home Depot.
Fluidmaster makes a kit that contains all the tank to bolt gaskets and includes all brass bolts. I found it at Lowe's for $4.99. Korky's kit contains stainless steel bolts that won't rust.

I tried the tank bolts like you show it, they both leaked. I tried it with (descending) bolt head, rubber washer, tank, rubber washer, metal washer, nut, toilet base, metal washer, nut. That worked fine. The bolt head, metal washer, then rubber washer setup you use does seem to cause leakage.
This saved my life. I couldn't figure out where the leak was coming from. Thank you
Exactly! Need a rubber washer on both sides of tank bottom.
Thank you so much from the 'Two Little Old Ladies' Construction Co.'... we caused the leak ourselves, of course, when moving the toilet to replace the bathroom floor at my house...so proud of ourselves for moving, laying tile, re-seating new wax ring, new bolts, and then we turned on the water... but one trip to youtube, one video (got lucky the first time), one trip to the hardware store and we are back in business, high and dry! Man, Is it a law of the universe that one of the nuts cones right off and the other one makes you remember swear words you had forgotten?
I used my dremel to cut the bolt.
Rogelio Hernandez i just used that ...hey this toilet shyt
Dremels or Proxxon rotary tools are one of the best tools ever invented. Any time I'm up against a completely seized or corroded nut and washer, I simply think about the time my Army helicopter (CH-47) blew a hydraulic fitting far from my base. We were shuttling troops from from my base in Va. to Ft. Bragg North Carolina.
That hydraulic fitting that blew was in a location that had a ridiculously stupid service port window, you could see it, and just about touch it with your fingertips. (Boeing engineers were asleep when they designed this service window. My helo was an older model, they fixed this in later revisions) but Ft Bragg didn't have the special tool needed to reach this simple fitting, as all their Chinooks were newer models than mine)
A Blackhawk had to be dispatched hundreds of miles away to bring me a single stupid tool that gave me 6" of extra reach. Spent an entire day in a cow pasture with a full load of soldiers and their gear getting ready to be deployed. Almost no trees and the middle of summer, sitting looking at cow patties for half the day. Was supposed to be a quick in and out...
So now, any time I find a tough seized nut, I remember that day baking in the sun to bring an annoying nut and toilet bolt issue into perspective. Still annoying though....
I just drilled the top off the bolt and got it free in 10 seconds..

Hack saw for me
My kit came with rubber washers to place on both sides of the tank bottom. I think this is the proper configuration to ensure a watertight seal. One rubber washer will not cut it. The lazy ass who installed my toilets did it that way. Hence, decades later I’m saddled with leaks and the result of his laziness.
Great demonstration. I was a little nervous taking this project on. After watching your video I felt very confident this was something I can do. Your hacksaw hack really came in handy I had the same problem with both sides. If didn’t see this video I would had a nightmare of a time . Thanks for your demonstration and information. I was able to complete the leaky toilet repair, with my wife's help, after purchasing the tank repair kit for $3.29 at a local store. The washer was deterioated beyond use, and we did it on a Sunday afternoon without any additional troubleshooting or unforseen problems; simple process! My kit was one with the wingnuts and the washer that did not cover the bottom attachment completely as you stated was your preference, but it worked just fine. Thanks again FIX IT!
Everyone...please do no use a metal washer inside the toilet tank. Need only the rubber gasket washer to assure no leaks.
He's right. I followed Fix It and put the washer in the tank and that doesn't allow the rubber washer to seal the hole. It leaked and now I have to do over.
Should you use plumbers putty in between the bottom of the tank and Rubber washer?
@@health_fitness_wellness24 No, it isn't necessary
I am about to change my bolts. Just to confirm, the rubber washer was on the tank side right. Then his suggestion was to have the washer between the bolt & rubber washer. So nut, metal washer, rubber washer then tank. Basically the rubber washer touches the tank. Except for the metal washer & nut in between the tank & bowl. The order is metal washer then nut.
Metal washer goes underneath tank where there is no water. Rubber goes inside tank to keep water from leaking out of tank through bolt holes.
I put a little silicone sealer on the upper-most 1/4" of the bolt shaft just under the head, then the rubber washer - resulting in a silicone seal bolt-head-to-rubber, and a rubber-to-porcelain seal to the tank. When you slide on the rubber washer, it pushes the bit of silicone up and makes a really nice little weld looking seal at the top.
When the seal ages and it's time to replace, since the bolts are long, I lock 2 nuts together on the bottom of the bolt, and use them to hold the bolt as I break loose the original nut. All are easy to take off then; and you don't need to hold the bolt at the top to get it loose.
The silicone sealer makes sense, and the two bolts locked together is a great idea. Thanks from all of us out here in CZcams land.
Thank you for this, it was well presented and thorough for me to understand in a few quick watches. I used your advice on the screws but did everything else by memory from disassembling all the additional parts.
Now the toilet works flawlessly and no longer leaks, and I have peace of mind now that all the parts are new.
P.S. I subscribed to the channel as well because I’m going to need help in the future on whatever project pops up around the house.

Be careful not to over tighten bolts because you can definitely CRACK the porcelain bowl.
Thank you so much for this tip! What do I do if there's a leak still and I tightened the bolts?
@@neettim double check that you don't have a "cracked" tank. If the water is coming from the bolt locations then most likely a bolt/gasket type issue but if the water is coming from else where, check for a crack in the porcelain.
In 40 years of doing this I've never, never place nuts on the bottom of the tank. This makes it almost impossible for the next person to get the bolts out.
+blueticecho no nuts ? how do you prevent screws from moving left and right? nut will secure screw to tank
I didnt realize how hard it would be for the next guy, but it didnt seem right to me and ive never installed a toilet.
Your right:). You need to know that there is a nut there. If you do the easiest way to take those bolts off is to wiggle them with Vise-Grip and brake the bolt. Then take the tank out and brake the bolt one more time :)

Get silicon and just cover the bolt with silicon. will last a couple years
I will try this, because even after I thought I had tightened it pretty good, I still has a slight leak. Quite frustrating. I am assuming the bolts need to be dry before applying the silicon.
Yes they do need to be dry and I'd let it set a day or 2
The crazy thing about it is one manufactures directions says the same as your video and the other is without the Metal washer. All I know is that metal on metal will leak some kind of seepage. Without the metal washer there is absolutely no leak.

I've got to tell you watching this video caused me more headaches. I took the tank off the bowl two times trying to find out why it was leaking. After talking to a plumber at a local hardware store I found out you did not need the metal washer, just the rubber washer through the bolt inside the tank. I hope this helps some of you.
Robert Peteski Hi, there are a kits with a few different setups. I've found if you have a bolt with a small head, the added metal washer helps the rubber washer to keep its shape. Sorry it didn't help with your toilet.
Robert Peteski y
Hi. I think there is an error in the video. I don't think you should put a metal washer against the tank screws. The water will seep through the metal washer and the metal screw head to the threaded part of the screw and you will have a slow leak. It would be better to only use a rubber washer on the inside of the tank, or use a rubber washer first, then a metal one, then another rubber one.
Hi, there are a few different bolt kits. Some come with 2 rubber washers. One for inside the tank and one for the bottom. This kit wants the metal washer above the rubber to keep it from flexing. The rubber washer is against the hole inside the tank to keep it from leaking. I do prefer 2 washers.
You are exactly right, it is possible for water to seep past the metal washer in this type of configuration. All that is needed from the inside of tank is the bolt and rubber washer. But don't worry, screw ups like this leaves room for the professionals to step in and clean up the mess, lol
It depends on the tank maker. American Standard & Kohler toilets really don't have the room for the nut underneath. Also, if it does rust again and the bold & wingnut underneath the toilet tight against the surface, your only option is cutting through the nut to get to the bold directly under the tank.
Of course, you can try some kind of rust breaking spray, wait 24 hours and hope the very bottom nut frees up.
Good catch CD.....youtube is priceless, I use it multiple times a day..... but always read the comments
FIX IT Home Improvement Channel wrong my friend all you're doing is putting metal on metal the big flat head of the bolt is all the metal you need another metal washer under it the same diameter does nothing but give water a chance to get in metal washer is for underneath the tank no rubber on that side all the sealing is being done inside the tank with the water

Thanks ours is leaking but having seen your video I'll definitely give this ago. And it's always handy to see the trouble shooting tips in case it isn't all plain sailing.
Thanks! I'm glad you had to cut one as I had to do the same. You saved me plumbing costs! I really appreciate it!

Thank you! I don't know jack about plumbing - but you saved me. Heading out to get the kit and will knock this repair out tomorrow.

Thank you so much for posting this. This is exactly the problem my hall bathroom toilet developed a few days ago. It took a while to figure out what exactly was leaking. Thanks to your video, I just need to buy the parts and I'm set to fix the problem!

My apartment's toilet is a virtually identical model to that toilet and it looks like the sealant formed above the two bolts on the inside of the tank will dissolve any day now. This procedure you showed will certainly be of help when the time comes to fix it. Thanks for making this video!
You're welcome

Great video. In most fix-it videos the repair goes easily. But whenever I need to fix something, nothing they show in their video works. It is always much more complicated. In you video, whatever could go wrong went wrong .. or at least enough to really teach us something. My bolts look to be rusted like yours and I will need your tricks. Thanks.
