“Who shot Van Gogh?” What’s the mysterious relationship between Van Gogh and Gauguin?
Revolver (published by Gentosha on May 26, 2021) was written by renowned historical fiction novelist Maha Harada.
Based on the book, Harada wrote a new script for the stage, with the adaptation directed by famed film director Isao Yukisada. In addition to his award-winning films, Yukisada is also an acclaimed stage director, having won the 18th Koreya Senda Award for Tango at the End of Winter. Revolver is his first stage play in six years.
Van Gogh is a famous painter known to everyone, so much so that his works are now sold at auction for over 10 billion yen. However, it is said that only one of his paintings was sold during his lifetime. Then who or what dictated the value of Van Gogh and his art? Revolver portrays Van Gogh, a man who once lived in the real world, and brings to you the universal passion the painter put into his work, regardless of whether it had value or not.
Synopsis
Sae Takato is an auctioneer working for a small auction house in Paris. While she was preparing to write a thesis on Van Gogh and Gauguin, an old revolver was brought in. The exhibitor said it was used by Van Gogh when he committed suicide. Researching this claim, Sae starts to investigate a mysterious relationship between Van Gogh and Gauguin and finally uncovers a historical truth that no one has ever discovered: The shocking revelation of Gauguin’s involvement in Gogh’s death.

原作は、アートフィクション小説の名手、原田マハ著「リボルバー」(5月26日発売、幻冬舎刊)。原田自らが初めて舞台戯曲の筆を執り、小説版とは異なる新たな物語として立ち上げました。演出を手掛けるのは、映画監督として数々の名作を生みだしてきた行定勲。舞台演出でも「タンゴ・冬の終わりに」で第18回千田是也賞を受賞するなど高い評価を受けており、同作から6年ぶりの舞台演出です。
今でこそオークションに登場すれば100億円を超える高値で取引され、誰もが知る有名な画家ゴッホ。が、生前はたった一枚しか絵が売れなかったともいわれています。では、誰が、何が【ゴッホ】＝アートの＜価値＞を決めるのか？今回の舞台「リボルバー」では、かつて現実の世界で生きていた生身の人間・ゴッホを描くことで、価値のあるなしにかかわらず、画家が作品に込めた思いは普遍的なのだというテーマをあぶりだします。
【あらすじ】
パリの小規模なオークション会社に勤めるオークショニスト・高遠冴はゴッホとゴーギャンについての論文を準備中だった。そんな彼女のもとに古びた拳銃が持ち込まれた。出品者はゴッホの自殺に使われたものだという。その真実を探るために冴は、ゴッホとゴーギャンの謎に満ちた関係の調査を始める。そして、誰も知らない歴史上の真実を掘り当てる。それは、ゴッホの死にゴーギャンが関わっているという驚くべきものだった…。
