AIRWALK SHOES: 14 Things You Didn't Know About Airwalk

  • Here’s 14 Things You Didn’t Know about Airwalk Shoes! Things like when Airwalk shoes come out, the logo, the team, commercials, ads, and even what happened to airwalk shoes. We’ll even answer the questions of if Airwalk shoes even still exist anymore.
    It’s crazy to think that Airwalk actually started as a Jazzercise company trying to break into the running and exercise world.
    Then, Bill Mann realized that his son, who was skateboarding at the time, was wearing through his shoes really quick. Bill realized that skateboarding was a big and growing market, and he wanted to get in on it: So Airwalk was founded, and they began producing some of the first shoes ever with with lace savers; some of the first Airwalk shoes even kind of looked like Converse shoes!
    Bill Mann sits down with Sin Egelja, a skateboard photographer from Australia who was working at the Del Mar skatepark. Sin approaches Tony Hawk with the idea of starting a skateboard shoe brand and putting Tony on the team. Garry Davis, an art director at Transworld, comes up with the name Airwalk as the name for the shoe brand.
    In interviews about his shoe sponsors, Tony Hawk talks about skating in Air Jordan 1s early on, getting sneaker deals, and potentially shoe sponsors with brands like Puma at the time, before going with Airwalk. Brands like Vans had an importance in skateboarding history at the time, but there was still lots of room for the brand to expand. Then, in the later 90’s, tony migrated on to Adio, and on from there.
    Airwalk in its 1990’s prime had an amazing team: Tony Hawk, Jason lee, Rob dyrdek, Sluugo, Danny way, Geoff Rowley, Andrew Reynolds, Andy Mac, Bucky Lasek, Jesse Paez, Tom Knox, Jason Lee, Eric Koston and Christian Hosoi
    In the early to mid 90’s, Airwalk produces some of its most iconic shoes like the Prototype, the One, the JIM, the NTS, and the Enigma.
    In 1996, Airwalk comes out with a team video filmed by Jamie Mosburg, who also filmed the video “the end” for Tony’s brand birdhouse skateboards at the time.
    It features some iconic team members, like Andrew Reynolds, Andy MacDonald, Bucky Lasek, Geoff Rowley, Steve Berra, Tom Knox (not the trendy UK Tom Knox), and Tony Hawk.
    Airwalk was sponsoring all kinds of action sport at the time, and had their hands in vert skateboarding, surfing, bmx, motocross, mountain biking, and even basejumping.
    In the 90’s, Airwalk fit into the top 5 for ad budgets and spending at the time.
    They spend $30 million in 1995, and then they boost their ad budget to $40 million for 1996, as they expected sales to double in that year. Fighting with big players like Nike and Adidas, Airwalk was dumping money into ads to keep a core-status with youth.
    They’ve created some wild commercials, like the bed commercial, the aliens commercial, or even the hardcore show commercial in 1996. This is on top of Airwalk promos that they’ve done with Jason Lee, Tony Hawk, Andrew Reynolds, and Geoff Rowley.
    Now available on Payless Shoes, Footlocker, or nearly anywhere on Amazon.com, Airwalk would definetly be one of the cheapest skateboarding shoes on the internet.
    After 1996, Airwalk began to slowly prioritize big box retail, and got pushed out of the skateboarding core community by other up and coming brands at the time, like Etnies and DC; quickly fitting into the many other sneaker brands you've forgotten about!
    Now, Airwalk is back with the Airwalk classics program, working with Jeff Staple (designer of the Nike Pigeon Dunk) to bring you the same classic line. If you want to rep a 90’s look, go ahead, but we doubt that Airwalk would fit into the best skateboarding shoes in 2020.

    I started skating in the 00's, and was in a single parent household. We were poor, so we bought shoes at payless. Of course I got a pair of airwalks. I got made fun of by a bunch of skaters at school because of it. But in my cheap airwalk shoes I outskated all of them at very spot I saw them. Honestly, humbled because of it. Airwalk might not be as cool, but it has a place in my heart for being my first skateboarding shoe.

      I remember in the early 00's, my friends would always rag on other skaters for wearing Air Walks. We viewed Air Walks as "Poser" shoes, mainly because they were available at Wal Mart. But in retrospect, my friends were just assholes who judged others by what they could afford. In those days Adio and the D3s were all the rage

Sin never worked at Del Mar Skate Ranch but hung there all the time. I came up with the word VIC for the skate shoe, The rise and fall of Airwalk is sad for it could have still been a huge brand. The owner hated skateboarders, Nike offered to by the company in late 90`s but owner refused and a couple of years later Airwalk was sold for almost nothing to some investment firm. Good memory`s.

    PS the NTS was the best shoe ever made.

    I actually just managed to track down a pair of brand new Vics which I always thought were super iconic... I had them in the late 80's and always really liked them. Can't find them at all these days as all the reissue stock from a few years back has pretty much disappeared. Really liked the Prototype 540s with the lace saver too but can't find them easily anymore either!

    • @pixiponpon
      @pixiponpon Před 2 lety

      Also... as nice as the reissues are, you just can't beat the OGs as they were just that bit chunkier, with the texture of the rubber toe protection a bit "spikier" and also about a 1/2cm deeper around the toe box... I just think it looks better and also makes the toe box look a little more compact which makes for a better overall aesthetic in my opinion 😄 I also had to customize my reissue Vics by stitching an extra velcro flap above the existing velcro on the side of the shoe where the lace saver attaches in order to wear them comfortably, because the lace saver is just too short to wear the Vics without lacing them super tight!
      Man, I wish I had a time machine so I could go back to the 80s and pick up some OG Vics 😂

    When I was in middle school as a teen in the mid 90s airwalks were hip and only like $19 then. Later circa 2000 my dad got a pair of the classics and wasn’t hip at all but loved them and that’s around the time airwalks went big box. It’s sad what they’ve become but then again look at Eddie Bauer, Mossicino, Reebok, Starter, OP, Avia shoes etc. all once great and now at Walmart/target or worse.

    • @thatguythere3558
      @thatguythere3558 Před 7 měsíci +1

      If it wasn't for the big box though alot of us wouldn't have had skate shoes. $100 for a pair of Etnies wasn't an option for me, but $30 Airwalks from Sportchek was, even though I wore some off brand shoes from Canadian Tire.

    • @bobb4502
      @bobb4502 Před 7 měsíci

      Well that’s great for you and indeed the greedy bigger compAnies wanted 4-6x what skate shoes were worth then. My point is they went big box and sold out and that I’ve never met a real skate that wore airwalks. In my day which was 90s, yes Etnies, Eamerica, even Vans we’re a bit popular although not like now where they are trendy and everyone from 60 year old wanna be hip old dads to 8 year old girls wear vans but have never skated.

    watching from London England. I've only ever had one pair of airwalk's, my dad got me them when he had a work trip to toronto, got them from a big box store no less, I can't remember them really. I can't recall them being very good. back then I rarely left my neighbourhood so would get shoes from the sports supply shops, usually vans Armbrusters.
    Nowadays I see airwalk Pivot's or Proto's on sale at Sports Direct all the time. Previously they had vision's, which I found wore out quickly just walking, so I'm reluctant to pay the money when for another 20 I could support a skate store and buy a core brand like Emerica or Lakai.
