The original by Shiina is a rock song. The swing was added after the fact. This lady is my savior. Her voice cut through my darkest time. Her original song is a masterpiece. An Ado made it her own while showing absolute respect to the original.

This is from her 10 year career retrospective concert which I believe was her first time performing as Shiina Ringo since forming Tokyo Jihen. The horns were added because Shiina no longer had the chops to do the vocal gymnastics you hear in her original studio version and early live recordings. The original was all guitars, in fact Kenichi Asai (Benzie of Blankey Jet City, Ajico, Sherbets…) plays guitar and the flute thing that sounds like whistling on the original studio recording.

Yes! That is the best thing I've heard from ADO and gave me a greater appreciation for the progression in Shiina's songwriting skills. I've always had a bias towards Shiina's earlier works (she wrote all the songs on her first 2 albums before she was 18), but listening to ADO do a new Shiina composition made me realize I was responding to the differences in Shiina's performances and not the songwriting.

    full lyric translation:
Yamate Street in the morning stings my cheeks
I throw away an empty pack of cigarettes
My tiny little room with no place for me to even stand
    Indulges the loneliness I feel
    Don’t love my restless shrieking
    Don’t look to the future
Just live in the moment, something you can be confident in
    Call out my name
    Touch my body
All I need is this: acknowledge me
I love you, I’m bawling all alone
And it feels so pointless to be fumbling my way down the road at
    night
The cheap fluorescent lights of the ticket gate
Don’t even give you a shadow
Ah, that warped, distant and uncertain day smells like Seven Stars
Tasting them brings me right back to that time of the year
The fact that I wished for anything at all goes well beyond
    contradiction
Your voice was more precious to me than anything in the world
Did I make that hoarse, too…
A German car and a police car break the silence
    Sirens
    Roaring
    The real world
    A certain floating
    Don’t love my restless shrieking
    Don’t look to the future
Just live in the moment, something you can be confident in
    Call out my name
    Touch my body
All I need is this: acknowledge me
    Don’t love my restless shrieking

Ringo Sheena is a very good director, as you can see from her involvement in the direction of the Tokyo Olympics. Her behavior on this stage is meticulously calculated and is completely linked to the content of the lyrics. This song depicts the psychology close to madness of a woman who is devastated by sadness, thirsts for love, and clings to life at the last minute. If you feel that her condition is ridiculous, it may be what she is aiming for. Because tragedy and comedy are two sides of the same coin.

Shiina Ringo has been very supportive of ADO amidst criticism that she simply does covers in the style of teenage Shiina Ringo. In an interview I saw (that you may be referencing), Shiina said she wishes ADO was around to do her first 2 albums. But this was within the context of expressing regret that she didn’t take care of her assets early on and how modifying her vocals to more sustainable levels necessitated Shiina forming Tokyo Jihen.

As other have said this performance by Sheena was from 2015, fifteen years after she first released it on her second album and she's done many different arrangements of the song over the years. Whilst this is a great emotive version it's also quite a bit jazzier (both vocally and with the added horns section) than the original which was more intense and rockier. Sheena was going through more of a big band/jazzy phase at this point of her solo career.
As for her appearing kinda drunk, with a lot of her songs that lyrically have a through narrative, she'll inhabit/act out a character when performing them live, so most of her movements are very calculated as opposed to improvised in the moment. This song is about being overwhelmed with despair and angry emptiness to the point of losing control of yourself. If you saw the rest of the concert, for the song before and after this her stage presence is almost completely different with none of the stumbling/inebriated style actions.
Ado's version is actually a lot closer to Sheena's original studio arrangement, though the guitars are slightly different, escalating more at the end and Ado is more histrionic with their vocal delivery, you hear more brazen anger and betrayal than resigned despair.
I like Ado's version and would happily listen to it again; but it does less to make it their own if you compare it to the Sheena Ringo studio version. I slightly prefer Sheena's overall with the drama of this live version factored in and I fully accept some of that will come from my own biases as a massive Tokyo Jihen fan (the band she's fronted since 2004, though they were on hiatus 2012-19). For me personally, the peak phase 2 Tokyo Jihen line-up can eclipse even peak solo Sheena Ringo, through sheer musicality and the ability to perform any song in just about any style and successfully pull it off.

@@guitarandy2406 Yes, ADO’s cover is pretty much a shriek for shriek copy of Shiina’s original versions (15 years prior to the performance Mark is showing), not ADO making it her own. Shiina Ringo’s Tsumi to Batsu seems to have become the standard test for proving a Japanese singer’s vocal virtuosity. Aina the End performed it during a singing competition, Nakamoto Yuta of Kpop group NCT covered it recently, Anna Tsuchiya did an amazing acappella version. ADO is just imitating teenage Shiina’s distinctive vocals - it’s a credible effort, but still lacks the dynamic range and technical flourishes that a younger Shiina could put into it.

"Yamate Street" does not pass through Kabukichō. I think there is nothing in the lyrics that would suggest Kabukichō and prostitutes in particular. Ringo's 2nd single, "Kabukichō no Joō [Queen of Kabukichō]" is, as you know, about a woman in the night entertainment business, though.

Not sure if it there is much value in comparing any two versions of the same song. They are an expression of the performer, producer, arranger, artists etc... But as it is and in this case, I can not see how the original could be bested. Both are great but Sheena's ability to express the emotions of the story seem to resonate (simplicity carries great weight) and delve deeper (maybe because she wrote the song and is more attached to the story). Further, I do think Ado's version is a homage of sorts to Sheena... Ultimately Sheena is the Queen (of Queens) and the rest are subjects to her abilities, not a concept that Sheena would rejoice in, I suspect. Few have the ability and depth of work that Sheena has. Sheena, in my humble opinion, is one of the very rare true legends, whether she likes it or not. None of this is not to say that Ado is not a great performer... Ohhh and do yourself a favour and have a listen to the album Shōso Strip-a masterpiece in composition, music, arrangement, and storytelling.

Ado's vocal talent is powerful, expressive, and truly wonderful; it can be compared to a ``excellent instrument'' and a ``master of that instrument.''
On the other hand, Ringo Shiina has an outstanding talent for songwriting, and has long been known for her amazing ability to create spaces in music. She originally intended to become a music producer, but the people around her decided to make her debut as a singer. That's why, although her work may seem sensuous at first glance, it is actually a very rational and calculated expression.

    • @destinationsunnyside250

I’m sorry but that is not quite true. I lived in Japan 1989-2002 and like other Japanese residents became aware of Shiina Ringo when she won a national talent contest at 16. Yes, she wrote the song she sang for the finals, but it wasn’t for songwriting that she gained national attention, but for her jaw-dropping, totally unique, powerful voice. This led to a record contract with Toshiba/EMI.
However, Shiina was less than cooperative with Toshiba/EMI’s attempt to mold her into a “marketable” idol. So the record company brought in veteran Kameda Seiji to try to control the precocious teen. Instead Kameda recognized Shiina’s genius and helped the fledgling artist explore her creative excesses. By age 18, she had written enough content for 2 albums which were released as Muzai Moratorium in 1999 and Shōso Strip in 2000. As popular as these studio albums were, it was her concert performances for which she became legend. Within 3 years after her debut, 1999-2002, her record label released 8 different concert DVDs. I never got to attend one of her concerts, but I did see her perform live at a TV station around 2000, and the sounds that came out of the young woman’s throat sent me to a higher plane of existence.

I think there's a tendency, maybe understandably, to focus the comparison on the vocals, but for me it's more in the music where Ringo's studio version is superior to Ado's. While Ado's version on the face of it has all the right elements, the right guitar tones, and is well played, it just feels more clinical and by the numbers and lacks some of the genuinely raw band feel of the original. I think it's difficult to recreate that feeling of the original artist, having composed an absolute banger, going in the studio and smashing it at that time with her band.

Really enjoyed the breakdown of the two styles, and that it wasn't a competition. I'm a bit of a sucker for brass and winds in general. So hearing you put some more objective thoughts into the discussion was just great. So glad you reacted to this pair, TY!
BUT! No pause during the solo at 13:12. Shaking my SMH head. 😆
EDIT: What crime would I get away with? Putting a horse in a bathtub. Illegal in some parts of the US.

NOOO!! When people dismiss ADO’s vocals as a pale copy of Shiina Ringo in her prime, they mean pre-2002 Shiina Ringo, not relatively recent performances like this. If your only exposure to Shiina Ringo is from CZcams then, I’m sorry but you have never experienced the greatest voice in the history of human civilization. It’s not like there doesn’t exist a record of Shiina’s early performances, in addition to her first two studio albums, her record label put out 8 concert dvds between 1999 and 2002 - a recognition that as great as her studio masterpieces were, when she performed live she turned the dial way past 11. Around 2004 Shiina changed her singing style and no longer pushes her voice to the same extremes even when she covers her earlier works. Unfortunately, its only post 2004 Shiina that is available on YT - uploaded clips from her earlier performances get taken down immediately, reactions get blocked. Her later stuff is still great, but its like listening to Aretha Franklin in her 60s, still great music but if that’s the only Aretha you’ve heard then you can’t entirely understand the queen of soul moniker.

@@markabusireactions I wasn’t referring to your reaction at all, I enjoyed it very much. You didn’t dismiss ADO, but I (and others) certainly have. To her cover of a Ling Toshite Sigure song I once commented “this is the result you would get if you asked an AI music generator to create Unravel in the style of teenage Shiina Ringo”. Which is a silly criticism, that she gets close to Shiina Ringo in her prime means ADO is one of the best vocal artists today.

One wrote it (along tons of other great songs - you have no idea of the quality, size and importance of her work) and performed it live here, while acting fantastically (she has an amazing stage presence and her shows are always incredibly theatricals - and differents).
The other one recorded it in studio, so you don't even know how it really sounds don't you? 😉
    No possible comparison.
Btw Shiina Ringo wrote a song for Ado (she has an habit of writing songs for up and coming young singers). She's a legend (and still amazing on stage 25 years after her beginnings). Listen to her first three albums and try to imagine she wrote them et recorded them while being around 20.

Shiina has not been at the Saki, this is her interpretation of the lyrics. I dare say the average pissed up Glaswegien would be unable to sing this song. By the way, please stop calling Ado Aydo.

Not sure why, but the song reminded me a lot of the intro music of Latin American soap operas. Perhaps it's because of the singer's voice. As I heard her and the background music, the likes of Ana Gabriel, Vikki Carr and Rocío Dúrcal came to my mind. =)

I prefer Ado's version, no contest, personally - I do like the original, and have listened to it plenty, but to me Ado still blows it out of the water (comparable to what Johnny Cash did with NIN's Hurt). To each their own though, and obviously props to Sheena for writing such a great song.

Have you heard Ringo's original when she was 20? She wrote the song and she decided to sing like that, and her MV! That was very sensational. I've been listening to Ringo's for last 25 years and this live jazz version is only one part of her long music life.
I can't finish listen Ado's till the end because she copied Ringo's original too much with respect but not being able to give it her own uniqueness much than original. I listen to other Ado songs tho, she is a young and powerful singer.
