- Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Next To Normal is now in rehearsals for its weekend-long run at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC (January 29-February 3). Staged by original director Michael Greif, the cast stars Tony winner Rachel Bay Jones as Diana, alongside Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon as Dan, Maia Reficco as Natalie, Khamary Rose as Gabe, Ben Levi Ross as Henry, and Michael Park as Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine. Get a sneak peek inside the rehearsal room with Jones and her costars as they perform the songs "You Don't Know/I Am the One" and "I Miss the Mountains" from the emotional score.
they better give us cast recording or i'm gonna sue.

Quick PSA fans, I just finished watching their performance at the Kennedy center, and YES it was everything and YES I did have to randomly book a hotel to stay the night in DC because my head hurts from crying too much to drive back to NJ
This was SO good live! I was just listening to the Bway Cast Recording and missed hearing Rachel sing this. She was SO GOOD with this role.
Seeing this live was an incredible treat. One of the best live performances I have ever seen.

I love Rachel Bay Jones, and I'm really excited for this performance, but no one is as good as Alice Ripley.
She doesn't have Ripley's power but RBJ is a fantastic actress. She has a natural softness and vulnerability about her. She was amazing in Pippin and DEH
Agreed! No one can be a better Heidi in DEH than RBJ likewise no one can match Ripley’s portrayal of Diane in Next to Normal.

@@astoriacub Yeah she's a good actor, but this is a concert of Next to Normal, so it doesn't really matter how well she can act as much as how well she can sing this score.
@@madeleine.exists9207 Actually character matters quite a bit, staged or not. Character dictates phrasing, tempo, color...character dictates nuance.

They’ve been rehearsing for like 5 minutes. Give her time, she’s extraordinary.
Violetta Dude, it’s literally a rehearsal. Don’t expect her to be perfect during the first couple of readings, especially when they’re not memorized.
I'm pretty sure this is a concert so it doesn't matter if she can act it, but her singing is rough.
i just saw this production last night and can confirm that rachel's voice was perfect / much more polished than it is in this particular rehearsal video. i'm just sad that there won't be a recording of it / that not a lot of people will be able to witness her in this role! she's a wonderful fit.
She's a great singer, but when she's doing "I Miss The Mountains", it's like she's too loud, or something. Can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it's just me. Alice is for sure #1, followed by Pearl Sun and Jessica Phillips both a close 2nd.

Yeah; it sounds like she needs to quit chesting everything and use her head voice more. I think that would sound healthier.
