ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Edelweiss doesn't grow in forests as depicted in the video, but in high altitudes, between rocks or meadows.They are rare. The custom in Austria, is that a man will search for an edelweiss high up the mountain and gift it to the woman of his choice as proof of his love.

Oscar Hammerstein wrote this song as he was dying of stomach cancer; it was his last song. Knowing this I can’t really think of this as a song about a flower, or even about Austria 🇦🇹. It makes it that much more poignant.

I absolutely love this song because it reminds me of Austria, where my great-grandmother Gabrielé (whom my middle name is named after) immigrated from. I never met my great-grandma, she died before I was born, but I've always felt a connection to her, and this song is one of the few things that helps me feel most connected to her. I've also never been to Austria, but that is part of my history, where I'm from, so the "bless my homeland forever" part always gets me.

My Mum showed me this movie when I was young, I would say I was about eight maybe. It’s always been one of my favourites ever since. It holds a special place in my heart and forever will, as for this song is her favourite besides Climb Every Mountain. It’s one of my comfort songs, it brings me peace and takes me to another world.
Nowdays, she’s not doing amazing, so I listen to this song every now and then as I think of her, hoping that one day that she’ll get better ❤️
