I get the impression that the speaker is voicing his own opinion as much as he is giving us Eliade's (and I'm not implying that that's a bad thing). This has reignited my wish to read Eliade's works. Previously I have only read sacred texts anthologised by him.

I don't mean it that literally (in terms of the number of years and so on) but Western civilisation is certainly on a massive downturn, while others may not be.

Life has been miserable for a good chunk of humanity since the whole chebang - as it is for most animals. And while we're not doing much better than the last generation, there are some improvements.
