- IN THIS VIDEO WE MOVE A REAR AXLE FORWARD ON AN INTERNATIONAL 4300. THW TRUCK ORIGINALLY HAD A 26' BOX BODY. I PUT A 22' FLATBED ON IT AWHILE AGO. NOW IT IS TIME TO PUT THE AXLE WHERE IT SHOULD BE.
I’m annoyed with myself !! I ran large Lorries for 35+ years, I always considered the moving an axle was a serious and complicated job, in fact, I sold them on rather than tackle it. You made me appear stupid and made a move look easy.......we changed a worn axle but never moved one to a different place in the chassis. I’m enjoying watching the video.Thank You.
if i can do it...anyone can!
You have a procedure that works. Mechanics first rule is if it works don't fix it.
Rinse and repeat.

JC Smith and Mrs. Smith, I know it adds a lot of extra time and effort to film/narrate/edit these videos but I appreciate you doing it greatly. This is such interesting content/information you present. I like your method with the rod.
We use cardboard, and only need to measure once, the distance we move the axle.
There are computer programs to figure out w/b and c/a measurements, but we usually use your method. Seems to work better than the computer,,,,

JC, that mag drill always impresses me. What a bit of kit.
We watched one of your earlier videos showing how you do it. It gave us the courage to try it. Today we moved an axle up 38" on a 2015 M2. Everything went together perfect, and mag drills work great compared to the alternative, even a cheap one.
I heard that TrashForce all the way over by the Pittsburgh area, lol
What a great way to do that, its kind of like a story pole. Makes it hard to mess up.
mag drill is worth every penny I wish I would have gone with the one you have but I didn't think i would use it as much as I do.
i had a company send me one to try. i used it on one truck and immediately emailed them. i asked them how they want me to send it back. set screws for the anular cutters would stay tight. bit would come loose and break. very sloppy vertical gearing for the slide. low power. inconsistent rpms. i am glad i spent a little more than some of the alternatives that were available at that time.
@@j.c.smithprojects mine has set screws that part hasn't been a problem other than being a bit more of a pain mine works fine. i like the magnet on yours also yours does not seem quite as tall and is cordless ,though at the time I got mine I wouldn't have believed a cordless tool would of had the power for this kind of work.
the magnet not needing electric to hold was a big selling point to me. i was surprised at how long a battery would last when i first got it. my batteries are older now so im not doing multiple trucks on one battery anymore.
Don't know why JC and Ezra videos come up a day or 3 later... but for the slides use a really thin machining or sewing machine oil. If you use normal oil it is too thick and can have a tenancy to make the slides loosen off. Had the same problem couldn't figure out why the slides kept loosening and then I realized one day maintenance in my lathe what I was doing wrong. I know with recording it's a pain but I use air to blow off the chips, also the slides like to collect the shop dust and can cause the slides to come loose.
Hey jc I really love your videos, I have learned so much from them about how to work on trucks like this. My wife and I just put a grain/silage box on an old flatbed truck we bought at auction this fall. I dont think I would have been able to do it without watching your videos of how to do it. Back when I was first working on the shop floor, I saw a guy remove his thumb with one of those drills. He was using it to tap a hole for 1/2 -13 bolts, amazingly the Doctors were able to reattach the thumb. He had some nerve damage, but was back at work in 3 months if I remember correctly.

i remember watching my dad work when i was a kid. he never looked like he was in a hurry but the work always got done quickly. check your work and re-check your work. i learned then, going slow and being thorough is really going fast in the end. thanks for watching. we appreciate your comments.

We occasionally load up these trucks in the steel yard. Always have to look at the front to see if it is overloaded. Especially with long bars. Thanks for the driveshaft travel info!

Don't know what it is but a lot of people using these drills and just drilling don't Oil them or Lubricate them when they are drilling you are amazing good, great stuff man. All the best from Canada.

I remember the video when you put the flatbed on this truck. It sure did look ridiculous with the rear axle almost at the end, not to mention putting more weight on the front axle than it should have.
My two Ford flatbed trucks are both 84" cab to axle, works out pretty good for 8' x 11' and 8' x 11'4" flatbeds. That puts the majority of the weight where it belongs.
it is what it is....it should do much better now. many folks dont understand how loading can affect the front axle. hope it was a little clearer than mud.
You make it look easy J.C. As you know I probably won’t be drilling any holes in my truck anytime soon (hopefully🤣), but nevertheless it’s a very interesting process, and I learned a lot in this video.
BTW I wanted to say thanks again for the snap ring pliers you sent. I got a chance to use them the other day to replace a couple tool box lid shocks, and it definitely got the job done. Much appreciated Sir👍!

not so much now. when i said how far i was going to move the axle, it was feared the bed would have too much over hand toward the rear still. it took some convincing.
Our huge old Milwaukee 110v mag-drill (20+ years old) is the same way. Have to retighten the track bolts too.

If you do things that you cant get in a drill press, get a mag drill. I love them. Is there any particular reason why you chose this model? I do stuff for me and it doesnt make money, i have to be conservative with my funds.

i knew i would use it a lot. i want a quality tool and i wanted one that didnt need electric to hold it to the side of a frame. i look around and found the milwaukee with the m18 platform. i had already been using the 1/2" m18 impact with great success. the mag drill suited me and my needs perfectly.
You like your axle like i like my seats!60/40 Split!
Seem like it would be easier to make a jig with thru holes for the entire assembly and then place that jig at whatever your new CA measurements are and clamp it and drill the holes using the jig as the guide..
You would eliminate the tape.
Make multiple jigs for different truck brands.
i have been asked this questions many times. there are so many different suspensions and lay outs. i just never thought it was worth the time to make them. this works very well for me and takes little time. i am comfortable with this.

i use to do this with a bosch battery hand drill.
why not use some loctite the allen screws that are backing out.

JC I really love you channel and watching how you put these trucks back to work. Got a quick question about setting one up. I’m looking for a flat bed truck to pull a gooseneck trailer and have some room to place attachments on the bed. I started a land management company and haul a skid steer and several attachments including a brush mower and drum mulcher. How far back should the axle sit on a 22’ to 24’ flatbed with a gooseneck hitch? In pickup trucks the hitch is usually over the rear axle or slightly in front of it. Thanks for any advice you can give.
depends on how much the trailer and its pin weight will be loaded. i would figure this out, then load the attachments on the flat bed where they would be loaded and scale the front and rear axle of the truck. once you know what what capacity you have left on the rear and front axle of the truck, you can use that to locate the gooseneck ball. the farther forward from the center line of the rear axle, the more weight shifted forward to the steer axle. careful you dont over load either one. you dont want to max out the rear and be light on the steer either. that can loose the "grip" on your steer tires to the road. having the ability to move the load on the trailer forward and back can help adjust your weight as well.

i just dont think it is accurate enough for my liking. since i started doing it like this, it lines up perfect every time. i have never had to ream a hole since.

i dont have a list of trucks. i dont have any crew cabs available right now. i am building a f750 right now. it is currently a standard cab that i am cutting and making a crew cab.

i wanted to paint it again! i cleaned primed and painted where all the suspension was going to mount. at least if he decides to do it some day, the part you cant get to has had the preservation work done.
