You did the right thing by calling for help, as sometimes fire alarm systems sometimes fail to report an alarm to the authorities. Earlier this year, I heard and saw a fire alarm coming from a multi-level government building here in America, but this was on a Saturday when nobody was there, and strangely no firemen were there either. (This was unusual, because our fire alarm systems have modems that will automatically call the local fire department’s electronic reporting system when triggered, and they generally respond very quickly.) They didn’t seemed to know about the alarm until I called them, and they arrived pretty quickly after that. (Edit: Fixed Spelling Mistake)
In the U.S., we're not even allowed to have red lenses for the visual indicator for fire alarm service, and they must be strobes with transparent lenses and reflectors, for new installations since 1996. Red lenses OTOH are OK for general alert systems in the U.S. (Except for the exterior flasher on the building)
It could be a fault with in the system its happened at my college where 4 buildings that are associated all alarms went off on their own displaying faults in all zones
Reminds me of a fire in the baltic states that happened because the alarms in the building were going off twice a month, so nobody really cared or showed up when it happened for real, the building in question was a mall that was open at the at the time, when the building finally collapsed a lot of people were buried.
