  • As Hurricane Ian slammed into Southwest Florida last year, Syd Kitson took some amazing video from his back porch of white caps rolling across the lake behind his house. Ian was a Category 4 storm at the time and had sustained winds of 100 mph.

Don't build houses out of wood and use hurricane straps on your roof trusses. I'm still perplexed that coastline counties still allow upper floor exterior walls to be made out of wood. Miami-Dade county doesn't do that.

Ron said it best , its not that the wind is blowing its what's wind blowing doesn't matter how well you built the house if it get hit by a tree its done

The sad part is this took this long. This isn't new technology or new knowledge base. They could have been building like this 50 years ago.
And we understood this problem 50 years ago. And it still took this long to do it.

They understood this problem 550 years ago and that's why the Indigenous people lived the way they lived.... Not trying to conquer Mother Nature - but live in Chickees that were in harmony with her.

I hope it continues to work for them, but remember, it was once said, "the titanic could not sink." We will never beat Mother Nature.

It's hilarious that they act like they did something "new". Go to the island of Guam and you will find homes that have ALWAYS been similarly built to deal with their super typhoons (hurricanes). Even old Florida had similar construction. Oooh...let's stop doing stupid stuff and get real. What a concept.
