    My 05 has been my daily driver for the last 12 years. I'm still on original clutch and it's been tuned stage 2 for 10 of the 12 years of ownership. Great overall car for almost anything and still a blast to drive. Along with routine maintenance - I've only needed to replace the brake pads 2x, rotors once and radiator failed at about 100k. That's really it as far as problems (125k miles now). What sold me back in 05 was the performance (0-60 in 4.5 secs and 13.0 1/4 mile) along with solid handling and reliability. Boxer 4 is also one of the best sounding 4 cylinder engines ever.

      gjtt no problems with ringlands, spun bearings? That's my main concern, looking to buy one

    • @gjtt
      @gjtt Před 7 lety +1

      Nope, not at all. I think it's a slippery slope beyond stage 2. So I would try and find a near stock one to cut down on the odds of issues. Good luck.

      I'm on year three, third owner, stage 2, original clutch, 83k miles and drive it hard more than necessary. No blow by, no oil consumption beyond normal. Car is a constantly rewarding machine

      gjtt question for you. So I hav been on Cobbs stage 3+ flex fuel package for 14k with no issues as well but sometimes I get scared of the power that comes with. Would you suggest that it’ll be better if I daily or on 91 oct instead for longevity? It also gets annoying going to the e85 pump quite often and heard that over time it can clog the injectors. If I run 91 oct that will almost be like a basic stage 2 set up. Oh and more of piece of mind I have the killer b holy headers. IAG oil separator and killer b oil pick up and windage tray. Let me know what you think. Thanks

    • @FruddyG
      @FruddyG Před 6 lety

      Stay on E85 and make sure you legit check the oil every other gas up. What injectors are you running and fuel pump? Who tuned your car?

    Very nice, down to earth review and video. Thank goodness someone talked about owning the car vs "racing" the car.
    It's like we sat down and had coffee and just chatted.
    I see some people identify certain things as a down side with STI cars. What I wish they would say is these are the compromises you have to make to drive a "Rally car" on the streets, And you seem to convey that very sentiment.

    I daily drive my 2007 hawkeye STI everyday the last 3 years. I used to have an exedy oem upgraded clutch too but after stage 2 mods on a cobb V3 and other mods including hydro powersteering delete, it was slipping. Now Im on an exedy twin disc HD ($2000) Same pedal effort but will hold 700ft lbs torque. 180,000 miles no huge problems but I do alot of maintenance. I change plugs every 30k. I putting together a built spare block just in case though. Ringland failure is like a heart attack, you just never know. Lol

    somewhat Stiff suspension on a daily is a must for me, I have an Sti with sway bars and some other suspension mods and I really like it, even when just cruising its nice to know your in a good car :) . Only hate it when going over bumps in carparks and driveways. I drove a pulsar to work and back the other day and I almost got seasick because of the body roll, it was mental.

    @Kosi Caruth It all depends on the bolt on. Some intakes are too much for the factory Tune. Cobb intake keeps the ECU happy. Turbo inlets that fit like the recent Perrin are ok too with a after MAF hose.Underdrive pulley silicone hose kits and a catback exhaust front mount intercooler or ok too. Catless or high flow downpipe ,is where I would seek out a Cobb base map stage 2 . Anything beyond that is a pro-tune on a dyno, injectors ,turbo boost controller.

    As a former STI owner, I can't daily drive it. Especially in NJ where there are lots of urban roads having 6 gears really is a chore.
    No complaint about performance except for hot summers where the turbo really loses power. Compared to my 09' Acura TL which has a little bit less HP than the 04' STI, it is much better as a daily driver and the power delivery on the highway is amazing it has much better top end. Of course the STI is much better handler and acceleration. I eventually sold the STI which has damn good resale value.

    • @svtwrc
      @svtwrc  Před 6 lety

      Vision33r the luxury of not having to daily the STi and it’s much more enjoyable when it’s your 2nd car having the Fiesta ST as a fun commuter. Acura has great gearing for daily and are generally more comfortable than a Impreza tuned by STi. It really is all about how open your roads are.

    While the stars do represent the constellation as stated here, they also represent the 6 divisions that formed Subaru in the 1950s. The reason is to the naked eye, the cluster of stars appears to only have six stars-two are so close together, they appear as one big star. In Subaru’s logo, the large star symbolizes Fuji Heavy Industries and the 5 smaller stars indicate the 5 companies that merged to form FHI. FHI was incorporated on July 15, 1953, when five Japanese companies, known as Fuji Kogyo, Fuji Jidosha Kogyo, Omiya Fuji Kogyo, Utsunomiya Sharyo, and Tokyo Fuji Sangyo, joined to form one of Japan's largest manufacturers of transportation equipment. Still in Love with mine as it always was my dream car. I’ve been into Rally WRC since the late 1990s so when Subaru brought it over we freaked! 2010 finally got mine. People are a little tired of it over here it’s in every video game every magazine but I still think it’s fire. It’s become more of a winter car for me and I’m sideways every safe chance I get on the road it countesteers and responds to my inputs so we’ll the oversteer is so controlled, same for you I’m sure it’s become an extension of you. Can’t see getting rid of it even if I rebuild it it’s so tuned and aligned and adjusted to how I like it. I’m going to check you out on YT right now I need to see the Prodrive!!

      @svtwrc  Před 4 lety

      Baka bird hi ! Cold meaning near the freezing point anywhere from 40degrees Fahrenheit under sometimes I have to start the STi in -15degrees to get to work. As an example it was probably 31degrees out and my buddy took his 05 STi out and immediately romped on it redlining every gear and the Turbo blew and cracked the oil pickup tube , starved the engine of oil . When you expand something that is still in a compressed state you start to have tolerance issues it’s how an old car lighter would work. Do that to your piston rings and cylinders a few times and things will not line up anymore. Honestly there is much more on this topic all over about proper oil temps and operating temps when trying to go full boost on a cold motor.

      Definitely need a tune. Any bolt on will require a tune.. If you get a tune I encourage following the exact mod list or under mod it a little. Never over mod the list and tune it. +Kosi Caruth the only thing you can get away with no tune is a Cobb intake for a 2004 sti only check the map notes for Cobb ,any other STi requires a tune just for intake. On a 2004 STi without a tune , Cobb Intake ,after MAF hose , catback only ,Underdrive pulley and BOV only if it's an adjustable recirculating and atmosphere vent. If you get a downpipe, the factory ECU tune is past its adjustability and you will have issues. If you want your engine to last just get the Cobb Accessport ,intake ,and turboback That's IT!! That"s marketing. Real octane number can't be higher than 100. Look up the definition and you will understand.

    I wish I had watched this video before buying my 04 STI as a freshman in college. HERES WHY👇👇
    Bought an 04 sti with 129k on it for 15k
    My mechanical mishaps
    1.
    2nd day of ownership the radiator blew at 113mph......... cost me $400
    2.
    ( expected)
    2 months later clutch went as expected it being my first manual car, put in an ACT XTREME with a light weight flywheel as a kid in my class had a porsche 911 carrara S and I had told him by summer his Porsches ASS WOULD BE MINE.
    Cost me $1800
    3.
    4 months after ownership( my fault)
    Driving on highway the wheel bearing went while on a date to the cape.... she wasnt happy cost me $360
    4.
    ( NOT EXPECTED)
    Bearings inside of the transmission literally exploded grenading the entire transmission. That cost me $5000
    5.
    (DEFINITELY NOT FUCKING EXPECTED)
    Engine blew or well I was trying to keep up with a c6 z06 and an m4 on the highway and the oil pump had failed but the oil sensor was corroded so i never got an engine light or any warning on the dash and the turbo went first at 130mph in the far right lane. One moment I'm happy as hell living life to the fullest in a pretty foolish but fun way, next all I hear is the turbo flutter and the car violently jerks to the left, I almost went off the highway where this is no guard rail and slammed into a concrete bridge support at 130mph, while my actions of street racing were dumb, I'm pretty sure had I actually took the time to do a prebuy inspection none of this would have likely have happened. I'm just glad it happened in a break in traffic on the highway, had someone been next to me I surely would have totaled the car or worse myself. Once home White smoke was the shooting out of the exhaust and I had the car towed to a mechanic.
    Costed me $11,574.27
    LABOUR FUCKING KILLED ME AT 130 AN HOUR
    I ended up putting a stage 2 iag block in and bought 2 turbos, all new oil lines, and a bunch of other new stuff just cause. When they looked at my oil it looked like the car just came from a strip club the whole thing was FULL OF GLITTER, aka metal shavings from oil starvation.
    I've only been able to afford such escapades because at one point I was working 80 hours a week delivering pizza making 120 a night and working at a Mercedes Benz dealership. And living at home, parents pay for my tuition, and completely refuse to pay for anything car related( I showed my mother my dream mod list 😑😑) My lifestyle was shit but bank account nice. Being a 20 year old in college I wish I would have made a better choice but having been emotionally attached to the car since I was 6 and i saw it ripping through the hills in monte carlo I JUST HAD TO HAVE IT and KEEP IT NO MATTER THE COST.
    This is to be the car that is parked right next to the buggati once I've finally achieved success as a reminder of where I come from and why, and what I've done to achieve and keep alive such a dream.
    The car is now stock( for the moment minus the short block and clutch) and I'm currently saving up for a rotated turbo kit to make 450whp, that kid with the porsche went home to china for the summer but is coming back for the fall semester, so hopefully once hes back I can be true to my word.

      MrDjvas hey now ! That is a hard way to learn but at least it didn’t destroy you or your account ! Still have mine and don’t have to drive it as a daily currently it’s only sitting at Stage 2 Cobb tuned w turbo back , intake and a whole lot of upgraded suspension parts . Rally was the main reason I wanted one too and I have to say it really does the job off road and on . Still get into battles almost every time I take it out , GTO smoked me the other day but he was already moving and I tried to catch him. Some young guys in a Mini Cooper were redlining the Cooper at the stoplight across from me so I drifted the corner for them it was epic .

      @@svtwrc going to school near Boston, having a manual car as a daily driver isnt exactly the easiest thing to do for obvious reasons but I was head over heels in love with the car and have found that I dont think I'll ever be able to sell it, from hooning around china town keeping up with audi S4s to driving down to rhode island and the cape, this car while not the fastest is very fun and definitely gets the job done for me. I originally bought the car for its rally heritage and its tuneablility. So far it hasnt disappointed me, minus the few mechanical mishaps but those happen ( just nowhere near as much as mine). Good video btw I wish I had watched this BEFORE buying this car. Coming from alaska I ended up just buying the car on instinct, plus I needed a car for school, rather then a well thought out plan. Saw the car for sale at a dealership while omw to some milk/ ice cream farm in dracut with parents. Asked my parents to pull into the dealership and asked a few questions, did a test drive ( moms did the driving since I couldnt drive stick at the time) and called the bank for a loan. And came back the next day and i was now the proud owner of a 2004 wrx sti. Then all the mishaps happened.
      But oh well I'm just glad I got one of my dream cars and I'll finally be able to enjoy her now that just about all major parts have been replaced. I'm glad you've kept your and have grown to love and take care of it. Keep up the videos man

      MrDjvas if you have any issues the channel has so many videos on the STi it can get you out of trouble .

      @DVJFan I never abused it, I drove it how it was MEANT TO BE DRIVEN, the STI is a car that's meant to be taken to the track on the weekends with minimal modifications and get groceries while taking you to work and whereEVER else you wanna go.
      That was the entire point of the car, do I do lots of high speed runs yea sure, do I do lots of joy riding fuck yea, but the car was meant to be pushed and driven on the limit. When my car came out its competition WAS M CARS AND PORSCHES and AUDIS( a smidge far fetched with the porsches) while it didn't compete with the interior, it dominated with its performance.
      I dont abuse the car I drive it how it's supposed to be driven, I'm not out here doing donuts with it( anymore, used to during winter), or messing up on my gear shifts and not rev matching, I drive the car how it's meant to be driven and properly while doing so, and always will.
      When I buy a laferrari( future goal) it will not sit in the garage, it will have the wheels covered in brake dust and the front bumper covered in dirt and dead bugs from being driven so much.

      Put 93 octane if you can and tune it for 91 . Knock protection all day long! That 93 isn’t really 93 by the time you pump it.
