Derek should be exposed to as many genres as possible. He is a musical genius and learning other genres will give him new challenges and joys and make him an even better musician!
I think he knows every genre of music there is basically. If you watch his music performances, you will see that the audience can also make him change the genre of his music (like blues, jazz, or even a specific person's style), and he knows all of them.

If your mum were an African chances are you'd be dancing around to beats in groups of 5 like everyone else around you. Growing up in a music-less culture where it's nothing more than a product to be purchased by 13yo girls at the gas-station impulse stand, has it's impacts.
Oliver Sacks seemed like such a genuinely kind, warm, gracious man. It's a shame I never got to meet him but I'll always have his wonderful books.
