Thank you all for a great and most necessary conversation! Kendra's comment around the 46 minute mark about inviting in "uncomfortable thoughts" really hit home for me. In fact, this has been a more recent aspect of turning a corner in my healing work. I've used the Buddhist story about "Milarepa" and "the Demons in the Cave" as a framework through which I've been able to welcome in all the disturbing manifestations of trauma in my life as meaningful teachers to be honored instead of maintaining the self-aggressive stance that more modern mainstream perspectives had instilled in me. Nature is thwarted at every turn in our healing and living - honoring nature as it presents itself to us is the access to our innate healing capacities, ime.
...another important point that was brought to mind in this discussion is regarding mindfulness practices - they are, imo, a vital tool to have in our toolbox. However, what no one told me when I began meditation and other mindfulness and cognitive approaches is that when we cultivate stillness and silence the nervous system is receiving the message that it's now safe to release stored trauma in those moments - not knowing that threw me for a serious loop! It made me stop my regular practices and feel as though I was broken or doing something wrong. Titration is also vitally important to apply in these processes to avoid being overwhelmed by whatever needs to come up. It's a wonderful thing to experience when you know about this phenomenon and how and what to do to go about it safely and effectively.
Don't know how I can see the whole film of "Medicating Normal". Have watched snippets...Where can I get this full movie download or pay for a dvd of this please...:-) I live in New Zealand and would really love to obtain this...
