  • So, I'm hesitant to publish the last 20 minutes or so of the podcast. Sometimes it seems kind of strange, and maybe even self-indulgent, to talk specifically about fat experiences. That said, I can't tell you how many times I've read things about fat folks being, essentially, afraid of doing everyday stuff. Afraid of showing their arms, afraid of going to the pool, afraid of going to the doctor, afraid of not fitting into an activity, and, well, it just breaks my heart, and sometimes that heartbreak manifests itself in these moments of what is maybe "too much." If you think it's too much, I am glad! It means you don't need to hear that message. Hooray! But I"m leaving it in, because somebody else might.

I LOVE YOU!!!! Thank you for giving me THREE side splitting, belly laughing, tear streaming sessions from the same story! I laughed until I cried at the trash can story when I saw it on Instagram. Then I shared the story with my husband, and we both got a wonderful laugh again. And today, I thought I would just smile politely as you told the story on the video, since I had already used up so much laughter on it. But NO. You are such a phenomenal story teller that I laughed with tears streaming again. Thank you for bringing so much joy into the world. This your purpose in life, in case you were wondering.

I sit and knit on Friday morning before doing anything else and know it will be a special time when I get to listen to your podcast. You are so funny. The Lowe’s story reminded me of the time we were trying to install cable and the tv had to be on to do it and I was talking with a tech on my cell phone. The tv was making such loud static(like being besides a jet engine) and none of the buttons work to turn it down. I had to be close enough to read serial numbers etc. but then I couldn’t hear the tech and had to keep walking back and forth across the room. It was torture until they figure out what to tell me to do. Have s great weekend.😊

Thanks for not deleting the last 20 minutes. Those experiences are real for so many people and it's important that they are discussed so that other people realize that they are not nutso and that, yeah, they should go enjoy themselves and get out and do the things and wear shorts or whatever they are comfortable in. You are fabulous.

Thanks so much for everything-that sweater is beautiful and looks lovely on you! I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. My 17 year old son came in to ask me if I was okay, looked at my phone and yelled to his dad, “She’s okay, she’s watching the knitting squirrel lady.”🤣🌻

LOL I had to pause this episode at least 2 times because I was laughing too loud to hear you speak (possibly even louder than the trash can because my cat woke up, gave me a dirty look and then left he room) and crying too hard to see anything. You are wonderful! I need to tell you that I am making myself a knit cotton sundress for summer and I am using your technique of casting on a smaller size and then increasing to the next size up for the rest of the garment and it's fitting like a dream! My own proportions are so far from normal that I have struggled to make anything that actually fits the way it supposed to. I ended up casting on a medium size increasing to almost extra large for my bust then decreasing back to the large size to make it ME-sized! Please, please, please do a video talking about rash creams because thigh rub has been an issue for me since middle school and even though I want to wear dresses, chaffing, sweaty thighs and pain always stops me from enjoying any "feminine" apparel.

I can relate to your elbow problems. I spent several hours unraveling a sweater from the thrift shop to repurpose, and i was holding it with my right and pulling out with my left. Later went shopping and I couldnt open the back hatchback door with groceries in my right, Embarrassing , knitting injuries. Or sometimes I wake up with my arm stretched over the edge of the bed and I cant bend it, lol. My daughter always rolls her eyes and says could you stop kniiting sometimes? So I crocheted her a cropped halter top and she was suddenly quiet. :)

So I just finished reading The Stranger in the Woods which is about a man who lived in the woods as a hermit in Maine for 27, but the part that makes me think of you is that they talk about the benefits he had living in nature, in SILENCE and in a lot of ways away from urban life. They spent quite a bit of time talking about noise levels and cortisol... I thought it was fascinating as well. Thank you for sharing the Lowe's story... I had tears in my eyes... and lots of sympathy pains!

I love you. Fat ladies unite. Last week I went to the park with my grandkids. They are 11, 4 and 2. They were rolls down the hill on the grass. I loved doing that as a kid. So there goes grandma at 265 pounds rolling down the hill not once but twice. Laughing my butt off. I was not aware that my 11 years old granddaughter got my phone and put it on video. It was the best. I can only image what the people at the park were thinking. I always enjoy hearing your stories.

Amy Beth, I love you!! I happen to live in a very "fit" city and it often makes make me think twice about wanting to do active things...especially because my hubby has health issues that prevent him from participating (the having your man along thing totally resonates...not that we need them to do things, but it changes the image whether we like it or not). I do find myself refraining from doing things he can't, but now I'm inspired to take my kids out hiking on my own this summer...at least once :)

  • @stephaniehowerderheimer98

I was trying to plan my travel wardrobe for an upcoming trip to the UK and decided to basically make a fat paperdoll of myself to see what clothes can combine, etc. And it has been super helpful for planning. BUT. A weird side effect has been that now when I get dressed, I have found myself making fashion choices that are more daring because I think to myself "Well, my fat paperdoll would wear this, and she's cute, so I'm going to tuck this shirt in even though now you can see my visible belly outline"
Thank you for always being so candid about fatness, it's so refreshing and encouraging.

Amy Beth, I love everything about you and this entire episode! As a small fat/thick person 🤣 who enjoys the outdoors (walking/hiking our reservoir, recreational biking, gardening, camping), I also am always saying, “Hey where are the rest of us?!?” I see plenty of fellow small and large fat friends at my huge intimidating gym - in my yoga classes and even the pool, where I try to give a nod in solidarity without seeming too creepy (because holy cow it takes a lot of guts to show up at this gym if you’re over a size 12 and I am proud of all of us for being there and taking up space, whatever our motives, and I love my yoga and working out next to a fellow fat friend who I KNOW will have to pause and readjust their waistband as many times as me and throw now judgments on that at me) - but not so much outside! Everything you said was awesome, and I’ll remember it with joy the next time I’m out walking or flashing my large tush on my wee bike 😉.

I love your podcast for the knitting, spinning and the stories. I can relate to feeling that sometimes people can judge you, if you're not a size extra small. Body image is such a touchy thing, and there can be mean spirited people in the world. If you have not walked in my shoes, keep your opinions to yourself, that's how I think it should be. I loved the last 20 minutes and am glad you didn’t cut it. I have a similar thigh overhang problem. I have always hated the way my knees/ankles/thighs looked and so I tend to not wear shorts. Maybe it’s time to look for some (at Duluth Trading?) and get comfortable with my legs. Although, I did wear a bathing suit last week, so perhaps I’m more comfortable in my body than I thought. Also loved the part about nature. You’ve probably seen posts on FB about forest bathing. It’s totally a thing and highly recommended. Hi Amybeth!! I luv ur podcast. I learn a lot & almost pee my pants, from laughter, at the same time sometimes! I have a suggestion for the corn in ur garden. When I grew corn w my Dad as a child/young adult, we always used a hoe to "hill-up" or mound the soil up & around the corn stalk on all sides. This helps the corn to remain upright. The hoe is also a great tool for weeding. U can hack out weeds around the corn & then hill-up the corn. I wud hill-up very frequently, when the stalks looked like they were leaning, not enuff soil @ the stalks, just bcz I felt like it! Just keep hilling-up ur corn thru-out the harvest! I hope u enjoy ur corn! I sure miss my own corn!!Sometimes u can take any loose tendrils on the bean plants & try to wrap them, 1 atta time, @ the corn stalk. It may help the corn stand straighter once the bean plants have gotten larger & stronger w an established root system. This is how it supposedly works w those 2 of the 3 Sisters. BTW, I luved ur handyed shawl! It was gorgeous!

Your new sweater is gorgeous! I made my first sweater last year and have become obsessed with garment knitting since then! But here is the problem I seem to run into: I have loved every sweater I've made (not the problem!), but then, the more I wear them, I don't always love the way the yarn behaves. Sometimes it pills, sometimes it stretches out and starts to hang funny (which I realize might be a construction problem as much as a yarn problem). Anyway, I wish more knitters would do a "rest of the story" with their makes. How do they wear over the long term? How do they care for them? Which yarns would they use again and again? And, as a related question, how do they care for high maintenance garments (i.e., those that seem to pill a lot?)? I have a Gleaner, but it seems to breed more pills than it removes! Maybe this is already something you've talked about in a past podcast episode, but I'd love to know your thoughts and opinions! Thanks!

Knitting content, wonderful. Talk afterwards, wonderful. I was having a down evening, and the Lowe's story (and I have been in Lowe's) had me in stitches. And also Tractor Supply, BTW. I know about the A1C levels personally and glad you said what you said. I'd also love to hear more about "The Nature Fix". I've heard buzz about the book but haven't read it myself; the premise is fascinating.

You’re the best! I’m the lady who’s dog poops in HomeDepot! So embarrassing-not quite trash can worthy. Love the Ursa!!

OMG you look so so cute in your Ursa. Totally missing what you would fix with the short rows so I don't know if I'm missing something obvious or if it is comforting that other people won't notice. :-p I LOVE kinesio tape. It's the connective tissue I don't have. 😂🤣 Your Lowe's story had me laughing so hard. You are comedy gold Amy Beth and I feel so privileged that you share it with us! Boy did I need the laughs of that trash can story!

Oh my gosh, I love this episode. I am a slender person (old too) and I have also had to cope with body shaming. People are mean and inappropriate. I have had to tell people to stop calling me names especially chicken legs. I still wear shorts. It is hot and I do not cover up. Grrrrrr ... anyway, I am so proud of you and your words. They are empowering. Another great book is, "Last Child in the Woods". We all benefit from being outside. The sweater looks amazing.

Great episode. I have been looking for a nice linen yarn at a good price. This looks like great value and judging by your comments and how well it looks on you I think I will buy some maybe even in a few colours. I appreciate you going into details about pattern and yarn.

I totally get the leg butts. I've always had big legs. But now I'll wear my shorts to Walmart without a second thought. I'm to old to worry about what other people think. I laughed all the way through the Lowe's story. You always make my day a little brighter, thanks, Amy. Beth.

OMG! I totally identify with you!! As usual it's been a greatly informative podcast. That being said I was laughing with you (as I've experienced exactly what you did) and reliving your embarrassment right alongside you!
Plus, can I say that in every way possible you and my daughter could be twins! Your personalities and your way of thinking, speech, verbalizations....... EVERYTHING, are so similar, that I sent her a link to this podcast and Felicia (she's 35 yr old child phycologist ) agreed that you are twins in a parallel universe way! I LOVE this !!
You are a fantastic inspirational human being that brings such Joy to so many, that you should be proud of yourself! You Rock, chica!
And I Love the Ursa in that linen colorways so much, I may copy you! You Rock the Ursa!! Glad you went for the Brioche version!

Omg I love you more and more with each episode I watch!! Same to all of the things. Dear Gawd, I would’ve shut down in Lowe’s as well if I had a loud trash can. Hahaa. You’re amazing and love when you ramble. Thank you for asking about what we’re doing, that was sweet.
